A Little . . .

. . . bit at time is advice well taken
In so many instances
Such as food, strong spirits and love . . .

(from https://aeon.co/ideas/moderation-may-be-the-most-challenging-and-rewarding-virtue)
". . . Our political scene offers a clear sign of the little faith we seem to have in this virtue (moderation) without which, as John Adams memorably put it in 1776, ‘every man in power becomes a ravenous beast of prey’. . ."

Express . . .

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.”
— Victor Hugo

"One good thing about music: when it hits you, you feel no pain."
– Bob Marley

"I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me, like food or water."
– Ray Charles

"Music is a world within itself, it is a language we all understand."
– Stevie Wonder

"When you hear music, after it's over, it's gone in the air. You can never capture it again."
-Eric Dolphy

"I say, play your own way. Don't play what the public want - you play what you want and let the public pick up on what you doing - even if it does take them fifteen, twenty years."
-Thelonious Monk

Super . . .

. . . size is a word that I remember from back when our children were younger, although in our defense, we really didn't feed them very much fast food.  But the term came to mind when considering the substantial edit I made to the music in the video Dotted Line since the video stopped way too short of the audio. It worked out alright.  But I thought I would now present Dotted Line in its complete length as performed that day.  .  .

. . . just because I can. . .

Food . . .

(thanks to http://gmwatch.org/index.php/news/archive/2015-articles/16183-monsanto-wants-to-move-to-switzerland-why-is-obama-doing-it-favours from May 2015)
A public interest attorney and author has challenged Monsanto to find any inaccuracies in his new book on the risks of GM (genetically modified) foods and the deceit used in marketing them to world markets. If they don't,  the logical conclusion is that their products risky and should be banned.  The book (by Steven Druker) is titled “Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public”.

(thanks to http://www.globalresearch.ca/altered-genes-twisted-truth-monsantos-silence-is-deafening/5469745)
And the response Steven Druker received from Monsanto was . . . Silence! Maybe Monsanto hopes that by ignoring Druker, he and his book will quickly fade from public memory. They have, however or late, been quite busy fighting lawsuits, trying to influence legislation by pouring money into campaigns, attacking critics, infiltrating public bodies, pouring more money into its PR spin machine, funding ‘travel expenses’ for pro-GM scientists, lobbying the EU to try to get GMOs into Europe, mounting a campaign against WHO-associated scientists, fighting a rear-guard action in Argentina, managing its profits courtesy of the massive subsidies given to US farmers, working with the Gates Foundation to uproot indigenous agriculture in Africa or cementing its grip in Ukraine on the back of the US-led coup there.

(and thanks to http://action.fooddemocracynow.org/sign/obama_signs_monsanto_protection_ act_time_to_label_gmos/) Remember,t President Barack Obama signed H.R. 933, which contained the Monsanto Protection Act, into law.  The President knowingly signed the act over the urgent pleas from over 250,000 Americans who asked that he veto it.  But alas, he failed to live up to his oath to protect the American people and our constitution . . . and very few Obama fans, or critics for that matter (who find it more compelling to question his place of birth) now seem to remember. . .

Interpretation . . .

I never have put much stock in the interpretation of dreams. The vast and varied array of characters, places and circumstances always appeared to be too outrageous, too unbelievable, to be able to place any stock in or to glean any worthy or rational lesson, instruction or insight therefrom. It almost seemed as if the nature, detail or level of gruesomeness contained in my dreams was purely the result of the food that I consumed at the dinner table and nothing more.

But now in my increasing years (and hopefully accompanying wisdom) dreams, like so many other aspects of life that I (and we all) ponder from time to time, no longer seem to be such a cut-and-dried affair (black-and-white, if you will and NO pun intended). On a (for lack of a better word) 'higher' plane, and when one does not attempt to skew, elucidate or embellish the significance of any one aspect, interpreting dreams may not be so ridiculous a pursuit as I once thought.

In short, I now view dreams in a broad, very, very human way as first, reflecting many and varied thoughts that cross our minds during the course of a normal day.  But in addition to a reflection, maybe dreams are also a mechanism to reassure, comfort, or even dare I say - instruct us about situations or issues with which we are confronted being the mortal animals that we are. Much like the strength we glean from the support of friends, family and community in the instance of an abnormal human tragedy.  Or even not unlike the comfort we receive during bereavement which girds and grounds and sends us back into the fray of our everyday lives.

Help . . .

(from http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/obamas-real-record-poverty)
". . . Obama expanded the safety net through his 2009 stimulus, but the legislation actually prevented even more Americans from falling into poverty through larger tax credits, emergency unemployment benefits, and expanded food assistance. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) estimates that the recovery act ultimately kept about 7 million people above the poverty line. . .

. . . The more important question to ask is whether Obama could have done more to alleviate poverty during the worst of the recession.  .  . the president was hardly the only one at the helm: It wasn’t the Republicans’ priority either. “Both the president and the Republican party really weren’t focused on jobs.". . . ”

Sushi . . .

. . . for the soul . . .

su·shi
ˈso͞oSHÄ“/Submit
noun
a Japanese dish consisting of small balls or rolls of vinegar-flavored cold cooked rice served with a garnish of raw fish, vegetables, or egg.

(from http://www.besthealthmag.ca/best-eats/healthy-eating/the-health-benefits-of-sushi#HQEZaC4ujsWqx86p.99)". . . Sushi is not only delicious, but it’s also very good for you. It is a wonderful bonus to be able to eat the food you love without paying the price for your indulgence. Great claims have been made for the health benefits of the typical Japanese diet of fish and rice. For example, average life expectancy for both women and men in Japan is one of the highest in the world. . . "

Particularly if you can eat it with ones you love, enjoy, respect and can mightily entertain as you indulge . . .

And Toast . . .

I offer my deepest appreciation and my most profound apologies to the plants and animals whose lives were forfeit for our good health this day.

We give thanks to the ranchers and the farmers, their workers and their hands whose skill, sweat and toil have brought forth this bounty from the Earth.

We are grateful to the workers in the fields who pick our food, the workers in the plants where our food is processed, the teamsters who carry it to market and the stockers and the checkers who offer it up for our selection.

We are particularly appreciative for those at this table who have prepared this food with love and affection for our enjoyment and nourishment this day.

We remember fondly those who the miles and circumstance keep from joining us today as we remember those who are no longer with us and are grateful for the time we have shared with them.

We enjoy the warmth and fellowship that surrounds this gathering as we share the fervent hope  That people the world over can share the good fortune, warm feeling and conviviality that  embraces this gathering.

(“Nonbeliever’s Grace” by Paul Diamond, who was inspired by a column in Ann Landers where an atheist asked what to say when asked to say “grace” before a meal)

A Different Perspective . . .

. . . than when I was eighteen. . .
After lunch downtown, I noticed a relatively crisp five-dollar bill on the ground, gently rocking in the wind just outside the door of the food court.  Surprising myself, I quickly stooped down and scooped it up.  I then, correcting myself for being so selfishly hasty, glanced left, right and behind me to ensure someone wasn’t searching for the note they just dropped or at least upon the verge of realizing that they just dropped it.  But alas, the few people within range were going about their business and none appeared to have dropped or missed anything.

So I thought to myself, should I really have picked it up in the first place?  If I leave this bill on the ground in hopes that its owner returns to claim it, surely someone not far behind and in no greater need of it will pick it up instead.  And does someone else truly deserve such good fortune any more than I do?  Certainly not!

Then I thought to myself, it’s only five dollars surely someone will chance upon who needs it more than I do, or let’s say needs it more than I WANT it.  But then I neatly dispensed with that notion for much the same reasons used to rationalize the previous dilemma.

Finally, I thought, what I’ll do is give it to the next homeless or otherwise unfortunate person, or possibly street entertainer or musician that I encounter en route to my destination.  But my walk was probably no more than 500 feet or so and, although I have from time to time encountered a needy person on the very same short route before, there was not a soul in my path that was loitering, begging or otherwise in apparent need of my new found currency.  So I placed it in my pocket and entered the building.

Don't Drink the Water . . .

. . . or, in this case, don't eat the burgers. . .
Can't, in any good conscience, endorse the food they serve at that Scottish restaurant on the the clown commercials.  But I can say that the Ronald McDonald House is a breath of fresh air in world where many seem to place continuously decreasing value on the lives of their fellow human beings.  I had the opportunity to provide some Gonzo Piano music at mealtime at one such house and found it a wonderful experience.

(from http://www.rmhc.org/ronald-mcdonald-house)
Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children – a long time to be away or to divide a family. And, for children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mom and dad close by for love and support. A Ronald McDonald House is that “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost.

Our Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. We believe that when a child is hospitalized the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed.

. . .Families are stronger when they are together, which helps in the healing process. By staying at a Ronald McDonald House, parents also can better communicate with their child’s medical team and keep up with complicated treatment plans when needed. They can also focus on the health of their child, rather than grocery shopping, cleaning or cooking meals.

. . . When your child is sick, you want the best care possible – even if it is hundreds or thousands of miles away. The Ronald McDonald House allows families to access specialized medical treatment by providing a place to stay at little or sometimes no cost. . .
