Still . . .

. . . growing . . .

I may be getting on in years
I'd be fooling myself if I didn't admit
But there's still lots of time to do that which in past
Many commitments simply would not permit

From within and without
I find music's still flowing
And the truth of the matter
Is that I am still growing

More Dancing . . .

Dancing's done so many times
Throughout our dearth of years
Enhancing celebrations
And distracting us from tears

A dance initiates our being
We dance from womb to world
We dance through trials and tribulations
Til  a final breath is heard

To dance and to enjoy ourselves
Requires no specific reason
We do it without thinking much
It's always dancing season

Advancing . . .

With advancement of time
And preferably some wisdom
I have learned to relax; feel less stress
Play the system

There are no extra people
To fawn or to please
I've become my own man
Life I now cope with considerable ease

But good things come, they say,
Each with price all their own
And the progress of years
Bringing things of seeds sown

I prefer though, to remain
On the bright and offensive
Taking tacks realistic
Yet inconveniently extensive

More Hours . . .

On and on flow the hours
Like rolling waves upon the sea
And like so many and so varied flowers
Each one some nectar for the bee

We're keeping tabs and writing numbers
Logging each minute in the book
We have a choice to
Either dread the counting
Or see the forest if we look

Store the knowledge
Hoard the wisdom
Take the years
And just run like crazy
Party’s only
What you make it
Make it into the
Best you can

There’s no protection from the power
Generated everyday
The blazing lights shine
From each lofty tower
To illuminate the way

Things that never occur to you
In the spring
Become clear with each
Passing season

All options must be on the table
All points of view be understood
And if you don’t do ev’ry thing you’re able
Make sure you do those which are good

Store the knowledge
Hoard the wisdom
Take the years
And just run like crazy
Party’s only
What you make it
Make it into the
Best you can

The Hours

Not So Much. . .

. . . a regret, but simply an observation . . .

Things imagined
Things desired
Youth's imagination
From so countless
Directions fired

But life is truly
Not one taken lightly
So gravity inevitably
Exercises its option
Sometimes not so slighly

And dreams
Although good
Must be relegated
Back further in the queue
Relinquishing where it formerly stood

As the end fast approaching
Wants to now get acquainted
and the years have provided
Many lessons to mull
Seems that life is quite good
When you're proud of your choices
But the brain can't help ponder
Each leap and each lull

2,492 . . .

2,492

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Baseball_consecutive_games_played_streaks)
". . . The record of playing in 2,632 consecutive games over more than 16 years is held by Cal Ripken, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles. Ripken surpassed Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees, whose record of 2,130 consecutive games had stood for 56 years. Before Gehrig, the record was held by Everett Scott (1,307 consecutive games), a shortstop with the Red Sox and Yankees whose streak ended in 1925, less than a month before Gehrig's began. Scott broke the previous record which was established by George Pinkney (577 consecutive games) from 1885–1890. . . "

. . . so, give or take, I have logged 2,492 blog posts since I began this, yes many of them were frivolous; some of them were silly; a number of them had absolutely no point at all;  several of them contained typos and other errors of which I am NOT proud; some of them were a bit clever.  But I did it!  And believe me, I well know, expect and deserve NO AWARD.  I have posted a blog containing a thought, a fantasy, a musing, a digression, a song, a photo, an otherwise 'unconsidered' (hopefully to someone) issue - but they were there, each and everyday since February 9, 2011. . . and here is the first one . . . (for any and all that may, or may not, give a fig). . .

". . . I've always been curious about blogging and wary of tweeting. I mean, who really wants to know every fleeting thought that crosses my warped little mind? And I base this curiosity and wariness on my own tastes. In all honesty, I have little to no interest in the fleeting thoughts of too many people. If I think about it hard enough, I may be able to conjure up two or three names. But pop 'icons', actors/actresses (or other 'entertainers'), media 'celebrities', 'news' commentators, talk show hosts and politicians for the most part, have difficulty enough formulating a coherent sentence let alone expressing any thought, sentiment or observation about a topic that would be of even the most remote interest to ME. . . So having said THAT, I begin my first blog. Yes, the thoughts, sentiments, observations, incoherent (and hopefully a few coherent) sentences and fleeting thoughts of MINE for all to see! . .  What the $*&#k was I thinking???? . . . "

Season . . .

The air betrays a chill
That while not unfamiliar
Is new to my summery soul
And the dark overpowers the sun
With a frequency not forgotten
Nor always welcome

Experience teaches me that such times
Must surely follow heat and light
And the seasons like life
Will turn turn turn
Like all the rest my years
As well will run their course

. . . in time

Complexity . . .

Childhood is so gloriously simple, for those fortunate enough to have caring, loving and providing parent(s). I was fortunate. I can still recapture, or should I say remember, that carefree feeling that was my life for, what now in reality was, a few short years. There is no deep-seated desire to return to those times.  They were wonderful for what they were. . . a beginning.  An introduction. A primer. I recall a time when I perceived all adults to be 'wise' (for lack of a better word) simply by virtue of their years.  And rightly, thanks to Mom and Dad, accorded them the proper respect that adults were due as a result. I'm not certain when, but at one point, most probably shortly after entering school, I realized that things would not remain as easy going as in the past. The status quo was about to be shaken.  There would soon be additional responsibilities, or complications, in my simple, carefree life. Again, rightly so. Now, in addition to having to decide in which direction I would ride my bike, whether I wanted grape or cherry-flavored bubblegum and what television program I would watch upon my arrival home, I had to integrate several hours of school, some homework, new friends and a social component to which I was quite simply not accustomed.

Some Days . . .

Some days I feel like I'm twenty-one and I just can't wait to get on with exploring all the wild and wonderful things life has to offer.  Other days I wonder if I have ten, maybe twenty years left to do the things that I enjoy and the things that I think I should be doing.  At best, that's only about one-third of what I've already had. Don't get me wrong. I'm not regretting anything.  It's only that, in spite of all the trying times I've had over the years, I've been having a blast.

Years . . .

. . . ago . . .

. . . my friend Bob, also a musician, alerted me to the fact that some jazz players, mainly pianists such as McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea, voiced chords in unique and interesting ways, a fact with which I was quite unfamiliar.  At the time mind you, I was entering the twilight of my years of  accordion lessons and listening to art/prog-rock bands like Jethro Tull and Gentle Giant. The lessons providing invaluable theory experience and an unrivaled discipline in practice and dedication;  the art/prog providing tremendous inspiration and motivation to create;  although at the time, I was quite unable to create the kinds of things I would very much have like to created.  Nevertheless, this unique voicing of chords, one tactic of which Bob was very explicit, was the use of fourths - resulting in a slightly non-conventional, yet pleasing and ever-adaptable sound as opposed to a major triad or some inversion of same. In any case, although I didn't fully grasp the enormity of this discovery at the time, I did attempt to employ it and have incorporated it into my musical thoughts and deeds ever since. One such composition that utilizes the concept is, as of yet tentatively titled, posted here in all its undecided and raw, new-born glory . . .

Never . . .

. . . too soon. . .
. . . to hear this again. . .

Heard somebody say
They overheard you
Just the other day
A simple word
About the way we get along
If only I were sure
Of the semantics
Having doubts 'cause I'm
One hopeless romantic
Could it be
You're slipping away from me

What will I do
If what I'm thinking is true
And you want to be
Really free of me
I won't last very long
Very far from your heart
And this third-hand intelligence
Might be the way that it starts.

Heard somebody say
They thought they saw you
Walking in their way
You were not alone
They said he didn't look like
Thinking to myself
Must be mistaken
Try not to believe
but still badly shaken
Why would you
Deceive me in things you do

So many years
Sharing our laughter and tears
Lasted very long
Maybe I was wrong
Not to ask you
Why you feel
We've drifted apart
And this third-hand intelligence
Might be the way that it starts

Are my sources reliable
Wait and see
Wait and see
Is my psyche too pliable
It could be
It could be

If somebody said
The sky was falling
Would you believe it's true
And change your direction
From spinning round
When it hits the ground

That's just not true
Any believers are few
When you've seen it all
It could never fall
Any more than
I think you could
Tear us apart
And this third-hand intelligence
Might be the way that it starts
