Maturity . . .

(from Thomas Jefferson: The Area of Power by Jon Meacham)
". . . Jefferson came to share Immanuel Kant's 1784 definition of the spirit of the era: "Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity," Kant wrote. "Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another. This immaturity is self-imposed when its cause lies not in lack of understanding, but in lack of resolve and courage to use it without guidance from another.". . . "

In Your Soul . . .

(from The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare)
"The Man who has not Music in his Soul,
Or is not touch'd with Concord of sweet Sounds,
Is fit for Treason, Stratagems, and Spoils,
The Motions of his Mind are dull as Night,
And his Affections dark as Erebus:
Let no such man be trusted.

Just . . .

 . . . my ego

Sometimes I can get my point across,
And I do it rather well.
You can see
What I think
About me.

It's just my ego.
It gets the best of me.
It's just my ego
It just won't let me be,
It just won't let me be alone.
It's not one of my most redeeming qualities.
Still though it serves me rather well sometimes.
It won't be easy to just let it go,
It's just my ego.

I take such great pride in what I do.
Everyone should take some too.
Don't you think;
Pride in me,
Not in you?

There's a fine distinction between confidence and pride.
There's a fine distinction that I'll never know.
Cloaked with some discretion you emerge from the inside.
I emerge in all my glory.
What is there to hide?

Mother said that I would never make
Any friends if I don't see
What I'm like,
If I don't lose some pride.

Decision . . .

Which side are you on?
Choose just one or the other.
God forbid you should think for yourself.
Sure there’s strength.
Yes there’s strength in the numbers.
But sometimes, you must go it alone.

Are you a them-ist?
Maybe an us-ist?
One or the other.
Decision time,
Which will it be?

There’s a world out there
And it’s teeming with wonder.
At your fingertips is the power to learn.
But you must possess
A sincere kind of yearning
To know what is real from what either one says.

So much variety.
So many choices
To simply settle for just one or the other.
Black or white;
Just left or right.
It’s chocolate or vanilla that we have.

We’ve got shit
That requires taking care of.
More important things
Than which side wins the game.

Fungible . . .

. . . or non-?

Tell me please
What is ‘fungible’?
Tell me now
What is not.
What’s going on here
That’s so hot?

Anyone
Can buy a Monet print.
Only one
Gets the original,
Single definitive version.

Just what gives?
Mom won’t understand.
Here’s the thing,
You just can’t
Simply replace it easily.

But perchance
someone’s interested
In the dance,
They will find
their way onto
The crowded floor.

Spending all of your cryptocurrency.
Call it art, cause you want it so to be.

Skeptical
And excited too.
What will be
It’s real worth?
Value’s subjective certainly.

But its clear
If someone wants to buy,
I can sell,
‘cause it’s mine.
Burn up the blockchain
Touch the sky.

You can now purchase a real music NFT created by me. Really!!

Dust & Gas . . .

Meteors that come once a year;
Quite a show of fireworks
When you’re there to see them.
Shooting stars fantastically glow.
All too soon no one can say
Where they are or gone to.
Back on earth we average reside.
Most of us will never know such adoration.
So I go my ordinary way.
Do my job and feed my kids;
This world and wonder.

Dust and gas -
That’s what they’re made of.
Why all the fascination?

Fabulous! They’ll take your breath away.
They will dazzle with their style
And their savoir faire.
Improvise; they make their own moves.
All the cattle follow close
Behind from the pasture.

Why couldn’t I be
One among those many millions?
Why can’t someone see
My astrological worth?
What causes the sea
Of heavenly bodies to glow like they do?
Shining so brightly for me and for you.
Sooner or later they burn themselves out
But oh so beautifully.

Meteors have nothing to fear.
From their distant firmament
They shine for the masses.
Safe above, removed from earthly life,
From uncertainty that lines the
Cloth of our mortal existence.

Joyride . . .

Take the wheel.
Take the reins.
Take the rare
But crucial opportunity
Just to fly.
Fly from the ropes
And the chains
That you feel
From the constant
And ever-present
Responsibilities of
Life . . .

Wine . . .

 . . . anyone?

 (From https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/12/donald-trump-wines [February 2018])
". . . What about the 2015 Trump Meritage, a blend of red grapes that are “sourced,” meaning trucked in from the West Coast. The label calls it “American red wine”; it sells for $30 on the Web site. My guest tasted the Meritage: “Welch’s grape jelly with alcohol. A terrible, fumy, alcoholic nose. If I served you that on an airline you’d be mad.” (A buyer at a well-known Washington wine shop I later asked to evaluate the wines—he once sold Trump vodka, produced from 2005 to 2011, because he liked it—took one sip of the Meritage, wanted no more, and said, “Grocery-store wine.”) . . . Even in the still-stunning setting, the wines suffer in isolation. The Viognier, the Virginia state specialty, was clean but tasteless; the rosé was water, the Chardonnay, the Cabernet, and the Meritage, alcoholic and sweet. At best the wines, such as the sparkling blanc de blanc and the Viognier, are, as my expert friend said, inoffensive; at worst . . . “At the end of the day Trump wines suck,” my visiting friend said as our Washington dinner came to a close. “But they give a lot of good and loyal people paychecks.”. . ."

(https://www.mashed.com/265881/the-untold-truth-of-trump-winery/ [February 2021])
". . . In standard Trump fashion, the Trump family moved in on an already established business, bought it out, slapped their name on it, then took all the credit for any later success. In this case, said success comes in the fact that many cases the re-christened Trump Winery sells are packed with surprisingly decent bottles of wine. The Piedmont region of Virginia, which lies east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is noted for several grape varieties in particular, such as chardonnays and Cabernet Francs, and the Trump Winery makes good use of the terroir in its winemaking. . . The Trump Winery chardonnay has been awarded multiple medals, including gold by the San Francisco Chronicle in 2017, the New World Reserve won a gold medal in the 2016 Virginia Governor's Cup, and the Sparkling Blanc de Blanc has received 92 points from respected experts including Steven Spurrier and James Suckling. So while it might be tempting to throw shade over the entirety of the Trump Winery, you have to hand it to them for making a few good wines. Or actually, you have to hand it to Jonathan Wheeler, the actual winemaker of the winery . . ."

House . . .

. . . in the country?   Nah!

Money, an older composition of mine (from Critic's Choice, link below), in an updated performance with bass and percussion, and multiple virtual enhancements added through the magic of Logic Pro X. This version (redux) has added improvisation to give it that 'special' Gonzo touch.

Powers . . .

A new song is here about being your own, bad, super-self when the situation requires.

Ours is a sensory world.
So many sources abound to entice.
Still this mortal marathon’s run.
The trick’s in
Pacing yourself.
Finishing’s more than the win.

Ears to see and eyes to hear.
Understand direction where to steer.
All the tender subtleties,
Every little nuance there.
Ears to see and eyes to hear.
Super-Sensory powers instilling fear.
Better than invisibility,
Leaping buildings,
Flying high.

Noise from all sides, all decibels,
Arresting every sensation possessed.

One step forward,
Two steps back.
How much can you take?
If doing the same thing over and over
Brings no change,
Will you do it once again?

I possess no bravery in matters
Any more than anyone else.

Always You . . .

You've always been ahead of me;
One fact that I,
In my infinite wisdom,
Could not always see.
But in the end you always convinced me
Things aren't always
What they appear;
The things I've always looked for.

Once long ago, before we met,
I thought I could
Singlehandedly make the
Spinning world go away;
Just like some king
from back in those bygone days.
But I was wrong.
I don't belong
Inside this category.

Seemed to be,
At the time to me,
To my advantage.
Missing why,
Not knowing
When to try
To start believing
In my very own
Self determination.

Sometimes at night when I'm alone,
The solitude
And the quiet can bring out
All the worst in my head.
But now it seems that isn't so big or bad.
I've learned a thing,
Or maybe two,
And just ahead there’s always you.

Perilous . . .

I don’t ask much,
Living my life the way that I want.
I stay in touch with what goes on out there.
I’ve seen trouble. I’ve seen heartache.
But my time here
Has been long enough to
Instill certain qualities.
Seems the more that I witness,
All the more that I wish
I could hear what you’re saying.
We’re all better than this.
Let’s identify exactly what we miss.

Beyond perilous moors
The brave sea glitters.
Better lies ahead.

Whether or not
We realize the years flow upstream.
Things that we’ve got aren’t always what they seem.
Your and my faiths are so different.
Each is placed in
Antipodal reference
So painful to reconcile.
If we stop trying,
What can we do?
What’s in the future
For me and you?
There’s both right and wrong but only reality prevails.

The Market . . .

(from https://www.popmatters.com/kenny-g-art-asks-little?fbclid=IwAR2ObOlW7lbCr3V5LZwLl1tX4H3DKHNIBpQtNa5lgLRXR5qwGfdbwCiiSsU)
". . . A steady diet of that smushy stuff—whether you’re talking about McDonald’s burgers or Kenny G’s music—is not good for you. It’s not nutritious; it doesn’t contain anything that does more than soothe one. Soothing is okay, and it’s not Kenny’s fault that his soothing music is well-liked. . . Kenny G may seem like he is “in on the joke” at times, but does he understand that his work is little more than pleasantly empty? It may be inoffensive, but it’s not wholly innocuous. When a culture overfills its plate with that kind of food, the body suffers. . . The value of “art” may be subjective, but it is equally valid that the value of things that are incredibly popular is not certain. Profitability isn’t actual value. We critics—whether it’s me pointing out that G’s music is the equivalent of a basketball spinning on someone’s finger or Pat Metheny noting that G’s playing is uninventive and ignorant to the history it wants so desperately to be a part of—have a right to our voice. You don’t have to agree with us, but neither do you have to “agree” with the market. . ."

Book . . .

Dear Booking Coordinator,
Writing about having OHO added to your live music calendar in 2022. OHO (originally from Baltimore) began in 1971 playing music the chroniclers swore was years ahead of its time. After more than forty years of evolution, OHO (now consisting of founders Jay Graboski and David Reeve, reunited with long-time musical collaborator [1970s Ful Treatment] Ray Jozwiak and occasional, special, when-available, musical guests) now cranks out a bevy of thought-provoking original material (either complete trio or as a duo) blended with some classics and sophisticated covers. . . A sample of OHO’s recent activities can be heard at: OHO Music Live Demo.  (or copy and paste this to your browser: https://soundcloud.com/ search?q=oho%20demo).  You can also check out our You Tube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw37xsKB0YlxgDhagA_yXPA.  Looking forward to hearing from you. . . I can send you digital downloadable files (via WeTransfer) of our latest release of original music called GAZEBO upon your request by return email. . .

None Whatsoever . . .

When I start into thinking
About the things that might have been,
I find that my imagination has no end.
And though they’re not without their own attraction,
I can see, each time you look at me,
I am exactly where I want to be.

And maybe I’ll never have that house in the country.
You won’t see me visiting those ritzy discotheques.
But I have no regrets.
No I have no regrets.
See I have no regrets.
No regrets . . .

It’s a human kind of feeling.
It’s one that everybody knows
At least one time, if not another, as they grow, I do suppose.
And though these things cross everybody’s mind
I’ve got the key grasping reality.
It’s the dessert I’m glad I didn’t eat.

Everybody is searching for something
That they’re afraid they might have missed.
And no matter how hard that you’re wishing
To have a second chance.
Don’t regret that you missed the dance,
Because the past is the past and you’re not gonna change it.

If it looks like I am distant,
Like I don’t hear a single word,
All the times that I’m not listening, but you think I really heard,
It doesn’t warrant any serious
Concern, you see. It’s still the same old me,
And like a glove you fit me to a tee.

Inspiration . . .

. . . comes from the strangest places . . .

(from [March 8, 2019] https://www.expatica.com/ru/news/trump-ex-campaign-chief-manafort-sentenced-to-47-months-in-prison-2-107328/)
". . . former (Trump) campaign chief Paul Manafort was sentenced to nearly four years in prison by a federal judge . . .  for tax crimes and bank fraud . . . Judge T.S. Lewis immediately came under fire from Democratic lawmakers for imposing what they described as a relatively light sentence on the 69-year-old Republican political consultant and lobbyist. . . Prosecutors from the Special Counsel’s office had argued for a stiff prison term for Manafort, the first target of the Mueller probe to be convicted in a criminal trial.
. . Ellis said that while Manafort had committed “very serious crimes,” he had previously led an “otherwise blameless life” and the advisory sentencing guidelines calling for 19 to 24 years behind bars were “excessive” and disproportionate to sentences for similar offenses.

Ahh, To Be A Critic . . .

. . . and to earn a livelihood from dashing the efforts of hard-scrabble survivors and American icons of the music business who have proven, through both their body/(ies) of work and their persistence/longevity/dedication to one of the most crucial (and ancient) forms of art of which we know. Whether or not you are a fan of Brian Wilson (and/or The Beach Boys), you must at the very least appreciate the sincerity of all his efforts throughout the years whether or not you decide to buy his latest release OR NOT, and simply ignore this drivel and just listen to this work as soon as you can. k

(from https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/brian-wilson-at-my-piano/)
". . . Often, the mellow nature of At My Piano works against it. Wilson shows no desire to improvise or rearrange his warhorses. He plays with a lack of flair that accentuates the melody at the expense of texture or vibe: He literally is sitting at the piano playing familiar tunes. With the earliest songs, this approach amounts to little more than tinkling the melody as his left hand plonks out acompanying chords. There is a modicum of homespun charm, but the simplicity is also a bit stultifying. . .

Til I Die

Inspiration . . .

. . . comes in many forms and from many places.  Sometimes we can identify its origins. But sometimes we cannot. . . . Though this piece does not resemble it, Cannonball Adderley's 'Tengo Tango' played a substantial part in the conception of this song as is blatantly illustrated by both its tango influence and (more obviously) its title.
