Response . . .

. . . to a random facebook post (love-letter to the current U.S. president . . .

(from various fact-check and other internet sources)
Booming Economy-
Gross Domestic Product, Third Quarter 2019 (Advance Estimate) Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 1.9 percent in the third quarter of 2019. in 2012, when GDP growth similarly dropped to a revised 1.9 percent in the first quarter of the year. That was under former President Barack Obama, so Trump had another opinion on the matter.
Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
Q1 GDP has just been revised down to 1.9% http://1.usa.gov/3hAL The economy is in deep trouble.

African-Americans Back At Work-
Trump did not inherit a mess. Here’s what history will record: More jobs were created in Obama’s last two years (5.1 million) than in Trump’s first two years (4.9 million). Growth in manufacturing employment began in Obama’s second term, when 386,000 jobs were added, and accelerated under Trump.  Black unemployment did reach a record low during the Trump administration: 5.9 percent in May 2018. It currently stands at 6 percent. But many economists view the continued economic growth since the middle of 2009, when Democratic President Barack Obama was in office, as the primary explanation for hiring. More important, there are multiple signs that the racial wealth gap is now worsening and the administration appears to have done little, if anything, to specifically address this challenge. African Americans also had higher income prior to the Trump administration. A black household earned median income of $40,258 in 2017, the latest data available. That’s below a 2000 peak of $42,348, according to the Census Bureau.

American Companies Returning from Overseas-
A report on NBC’s “Today Show” by correspondent Ari Melber concluded that Trump’s impact on new investments and job creation in the U.S. announced recently by several companies has been “very small or nonexistent.” Several auto industry experts we spoke to said the announcements by GM and Ford were in the works before Trump was elected, and were largely market-driven decisions that fit a years-long trend in the industry. Indeed, car companies have been announcing such deals — many of them bigger — for years. As for Lockheed Martin, the jobs aren’t “coming back,” they are being added as part of a larger contract for more F-35 planes.

China Is Paying Attention-
Threatening to buy Greenland certainly did capture the attention of China. Again, how did that benefit U.S. citizens?

Strengthening Israel-
The U.S. president’s hasty decision to withdraw American troops from northern Syria has consequently left Israel reeling from the implications – all of which could put it (Israel) in increased danger.

Freeing Iran from a Devastating Regime-
It would be easy for Iranian leaders to conclude that the goal of U.S. policy toward Iran has nothing to do with changing its regional behavior or renegotiating the Iran nuclear accord — and everything to do with strangling Iran economically to fracture the regime or provoke a massive public uprising that would ultimately lead to the its collapse. And they’d be right.

Delivering on every promise he made-
The Promise: "I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great great wall on our southern border and I’ll have Mexico pay for that wall." Update: Donald Trump stalls on promise to build a wall, have Mexico pay for it.

A Lover of America-
He grabbed an unassuming Old Glory by its stand like a prom date, and gave it a brief, slightly terrifying, slow-dance to "Proud to be an American." In that moment, in a way, the flag was so many of us -- Americans recoiling at the smothering and unwanted advances of an unstable lech. On behalf of the flag, I wanted to shout: "I beg your pardon, sir! Get your hands off of me!"

You See An American Hero-
Without providing specific instances of heroics, one's perception and designation of "Hero" is strictly and totally subjective.

You See A Lover of America-
Regarding 'love', 'fault', 'expectations' and 'fighting the establishment', you have provided nothing of substance. Regarding 'policies', he clearly, as evidenced by his consistent inconsistencies, (see his exhortations on impeachment, Ukraine, Biden, whistleblowers etc) he has NO policies. This presidency is a disaster.

Hard . . .

. . . work . . .

Work hard now
For all the things
You want
Suffer now
For better later
And rest assured
Your efforts are not wasted

Good comes well
To those who wait
And make the right investment
Dreaming idly never
Makes a contribution
Towards a future
For which you yearn

Leading . . .

(from A Higher Loyalty; Truth, Lies, and Leadership by James Comey)
". . . And then there was a man named Harry Howell. . . During my junior and senior years of high school, I worked for Harry at a large grocery store near Allendale. I didn't make much money stocking shelves, retrieving carts, and working the ash register, maybe four dollars an hour but I loved my job. That was in large part due to the kind of leader he was. . . Somehow he created an environment that was both demanding and incredibly fun. He suppressed a smile at our silliness- just letting the corner of his mouth turn up slightly so we could see his amusement- and told us bluntly when our work wasn't good enough. We loved him. But we also feared him, in a healthy way. Because he made us feel important, because he so obviously cared about what he was doing and about us, we desperately wanted to please him. . ."

How . . .

. . . it works . . .

(from https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/10/08/donald-trump-government-215691)
". . . Trump railed on Twitter against Democrats . . . noting that his “Tax Cut and Reform Bill” was winning “great reviews.” . . . there wasn’t an actual tax cut and reform bill pending in Congress yet for Democrats to support or oppose. The legislation hadn’t been introduced. . . tweeted that the “approval process” for his tax reform package would soon begin, which, again, is not how Congress works. . . there is ample evidence, that the president of the United States really doesn’t understand the constitutional process, or even American history, much at all. . . at the age of 70 seemed surprised to learn that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. . . there’s the issue of his own election and why he won it. A few years ago, private citizen Donald Trump attacked the Electoral College. . . Shortly after he lost the popular vote to Clinton, and quite unsurprisingly, Trump became a booster of the very same Electoral College, calling it “actually genius,” and claiming falsely to have won the largest Electoral College landslide since Ronald Reagan . . . If he truly understood how the Electoral College worked, and what it was intended to do, which he apparently doesn’t, the president could have made a much smarter argument about his victory: that he in fact won the popular vote in more states (30) than Hillary Clinton did (20). . ."

Parades . . .

(from http://time.com/5137489/donald-trump-big-parade/)
". . . parades. . . are a lot of work to rehearse, don’t do anything for morale, and are expensive in terms both of time and preparation. . . . (an) expensive parade reminds me less of our French allies and more of the old Soviet Union “Who has the biggest missile?” extravaganzas, or the truly creepy North Korean jitterbug marching style galas, with the even creepier “young leader,” Kim Jung Un, urging his nation of sycophants on in wildly over-the-top applause, which has a clap-hard-or-die feel to it. . . The last time we did a big parade like this was several decades ago and it cost over $10 million. Some estimates have the cost of a big one today topping $20 million, which would include moving all the tanks, missiles, jets, helicopters and military bands to Washington. . . Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis has correctly stopped handing out little “challenge coins” from his office — symbolic tokens that officers in our armed forces give to troops. As he told me, they don’t contribute to readiness or combat capability. . . I’d recommend we apply the same logic to this kind of parade. . .
For the men and women who have to put in the time planning, rehearsing, creating a security plan (a parade would be an extraordinarily juicy target for the Islamic State or Al Qaeda, by the way), setting up the stands, cleaning up, taking down the stands, and getting all their gear back home would, frankly, not be having a lot of fun. This would no doubt fall on a holiday weekend (Memorial Day, Fourth of July or Veteran’s Day, of course) so there goes their hoped-for and much deserved weekend break. . . We know that we have the best-funded, most war-experienced, highest morale military in the world. . . it is a fact. We don’t need a puffy parade to show the world we can fight. . . I’d prefer to see our Department of Defense. . . focus on planning for war, pushing the VA to improve, funding military families with good medical and childcare benefits, and honoring our fallen with ceremonies as they are laid to rest. Those are the best ways we can honor them. . ."

More Work . . .

. . . on Working . . .

Some things never end.  One of those things is the ongoing desire to refine one's own creations.  Working was written almost twenty years ago, with lyrics. But the solo piano performance has never been recorded for public release.  Since its resurrection about one year ago, I find many sections of it benefit tremendously from subtle dynamic enhancements. Another benefit of all this 're-working' is the intimacy with the unusual chord changes over which the improvisation is undertaken. Only time will tell how, or even if, the song finally appears on a recorded collection in the future.

Entertainer . . .

"You certainly can't make a living at THAT?!" . . . or words to that effect were spoken, not unkindly-just instructively, by my Mother sometime during my mid-teens when the possibility of my undertaking musical performance as a full-time career was being considered. . . And I knew (thought?) she was correct. Hindsight being twenty-twenty, maybe that's what I should have done. Hard work, no doubt. Lucrative, NO! Fulfilling, well. . . what do you think?  Believe me, I have absolutely no regrets.  It's just a day-dreamy premise that crosses my mind occasionally when I think too much.  I must say in hindsight, that at the time, I had nowhere near the confidence required to undertake such an endeavor.

Dedication . . .

. . . or passion?

(inspired by http://www.dailyom.com/cgi-bin/display/printerfriendly.cgi?articleid=50695)
Dedication is essential to get things done. What compels such commitment?  It may be validation from others who appreciate the amount of work involved. It could be an increased heart rate or an internal warmth extending from head to toe. Working without passion though, makes one feel empty if that hard work is unappreciated by others. The difference between 'work' and 'passion' is that the former is undertaken for 'others', even though we accept recompense for our effort. The latter is undertaken only for pure self-gratification. Passion fuels our desires and interests and gives everything else we do greater value as a result. Identify your passion today, your dedication to all other things will have deeper significance for you.

Resolve . . .

". . . (I) wanted to just acknowledge the insanely hard act of completing these projects, and wish you renewed inspiration and energy in 2017 in a world where music is increasingly devalued, fragmented and marginalized.  . . Distance . . .

Do you hear that?

Why . . .

(from http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/gop-candidates-call-prayers-calf-massacre-article-1.2453261)
". . . Prayers aren’t working. White House hopefuls on the Democratic side of the aisle called for stricter gun laws in the wake of the shooting in San Bernardino that left at least 14 dead. But after yet another mass shooting in America, GOP presidential contenders were conspicuously silent on the issue of gun control. Instead, the Republicans were preaching about prayer. . . “Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and the first responders in San Bernardino who willingly go into harm’s way to save others,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tweeted. . .Democrats — even those not running for office — slammed the GOP presidential candidates for offering prayers instead of action. . . “Your ‘thoughts’ should be about steps to take to stop this carnage,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn) posted on Twitter. “Your ‘prayers’ should be for forgiveness if you do nothing — again. . . My heart aches for the people of San Bernardino,” he said. “I cannot express the profound sadness I feel each time a new community grieves and endures the same pain that brought Newtown to its knees three years ago this month.” . . . "

Work . . .

. . . so hard . . .

Various sizes and colors of luggage are lined up on the walk.  One smiling, anticipatory face and two non-committal, yet marginally anxious ones proceeded from the luggage queue to the house. We were working on some final details.

One stranger and the six of us were in the punctual shuttle happily whisked away to our flight to JFK. Polite conversation took place to the muted sound of ‘Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me’ only because one prior passenger was already on board and had it not been for the stranger, the five (plus one) of us can sometimes been anything but polite.

Lunch at BWI, some beers and anxious chatter before meeting our last two travelling partners at the gate. The plane to JFK was tiny and the flight fast.  The plane had one row of two seats and one row of single seats.

The five hour layover prompted us to have a nice, celebratory dinner.  So where did we choose to eat?  Buffalo Wings, of course.  Fun place, lots of noise.  Tall table for a party of eight.  Needless to say we neglected to ask for ‘rail’ liquor in our mixed drinks and ended the evening with an outrageously overpriced bill.

Onward to Italy. . . an eight hour flight. Lots of sore buttocks, fitful sleep, airline food, movies, reading.
