Any . . .

. . . sane adult. . .
. . . could only LAUGH at this story . . .

(from https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/pompeo-suggests-god-sent-trump-save-israel-n986136)
". . . Secretary of State Mike Pompeo suggested in a televised interview Thursday that God may have sent President Donald Trump to Earth to protect Israel. . . .Pompeo made the remarks in an interview with Christian Broadcasting Network, or CBN, in Jerusalem, where he visited the Western Wall with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. . .When the interview turned to Iranian aggression in the Middle East, Pompeo was asked whether he thought "President Trump right now has been sort of raised for such a time as this, just like Queen Esther, to help save the Jewish people from the Iranian menace." . . . "As a Christian, I certainly believe that's possible," Pompeo responded. . ."

Eating . . .

. . . at your wagon-wheel dining table was an experience
I must admit
It was striking
It was lovely
But the dining was challenging
A bit

And not only were we nourished
By the delicacies you prepared
We learned some things of life
During the meal that we shared

Not all on this earth are equal
Some have much
Others are poor
Like the diners at your table
Who ate well
While some like me
Found their food fell to the floor

Equinox . . .

(from https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/equinox-not-equal.html)
". . . "Equinox" literally means "equal night", giving the impression that the night and day on the equinox are exactly the same length; 12 hours each. But this isn't entirely accurate. . . Even if the name suggests it and it is widely accepted, it is not entirely true that day and night are exactly equal on the equinox – only nearly. . . Earth spins around its own axis approximately every 24 hours (a sidereal day is 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4 seconds). . . The time it takes Earth to orbit once around the Sun is around 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds (365.242189 days). And, like two spinning tops connected at the tips, it also wobbles around on its axis, making a complete rotation every 26,000 years (axial precession). . . Earth is actually tilted at an angle of around 23.4 degrees toward the celestial pole, which is a certain point in the sky. As Earth makes its yearly orbit, 1 hemisphere faces the sun more than the other, the side that has summer. . ."

Walpurgisnacht . . .

(from https://www.facebook.com/ohomusic/photos/a.707674495921502.1073741826.136202876402003/8

Walpurgisnacht? A gathering of witches. Alfred Kubin woodcut used for "Ecce OHO!" CD release (1998, Little Wing of Refugees--LW 3053 EXP) “A witch’s nature is nothing more than exaggerated femininity carried to illicitly stimulating extremes…And so it can happen that the name and nature of the divine are merged in the monstrous, with bitch and mistress becoming one, for we are dealing after all with the arch-bitch, 'Our Gracious Lady Bitch.'”—Thomas Mann (Joseph and His Brothers, page 999) Happy Halloween!

In fairy tales and in Halloween lore "the witch represents the dark side of the great earth goddess. In our country, the cult of earth goddesses has practically vanished, the positive aspects of the mother archetype integrated into the Virgin Mary, while the negative and destructive, the death side, has been repressed into the subconscious...the evil of the subconscious in a certain form. They generally intrigue, poison, kill, or eat people, or they slander them so they quarrel with each other. These are the main activities of mythological witches, and of human witches as well." -Marie Louise Von Franz "Individuation in Fairy tales." Misogyny? This is about RESPECT (Fear of the Lordess). In my own experience I endured a 5 year ordeal with a witch, after which I have heard, she retired her broom...no shit.

Smiling Villains . . .

. . . beware of them . . .

(from http://nfs.sparknotes.com/hamlet/page_66.html)
". . . Ah, all you up in heaven! And earth! What else? Shall I include hell as well? Damn it! Keep beating, my heart, and muscles, don’t grow old yet—keep me standing. Remember you! Yes, you poor ghost, as long as I have any power of memory in this distracted head. Remember you! Yes, I’ll wipe my mind clean of all trivial facts and memories and preserve only your commandment there. Yes, by God! Oh, you evil woman! Oh, you villain, villain, you damned, smiling villain! . . ."

Those of Us. . .

. . . who Merely Fiddle & Pipe. . .

(from Joseph and His Brothers by Thomas Mann, translation by John E. Woods)
". . . it was not very clear-cut, but mysterious instead, and yet as grand as Jacob himself in the telling of it.  She heard about brothers as enemies, and the murder out in the field. About the children of Cain and their descendants how they were divided into three types over the earth: those who dwell in tents and raise cattle; those who are artificers of metal and make themselves shine with it; and finally those who merely fiddle and pipe. . ."

Tribes . . .

(from http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/13/books/review/the-social-conquest-of-earth-by-edward-o-wilson.html)
on  ‘The Social Conquest of Earth,’ by Edward O. Wilson
". . . one can stack up log-style all humans alive today into a cube that’s about a mile on each side, easily hidden in the Grand Canyon. And all the ants on earth would fit into a cube of similar size. More important, humans and certain insects are the planet’s “eusocial” species — the only species that form communities that contain multiple generations and where, as part of a division of labor, community members sometimes perform altruistic acts for the benefit of others. . .

. . . Wilson’s own theory is far too extreme, though. He adopts a Manichaean view of evolution, in which group selection is responsible for all of our virtues (“honor, virtue and duty”), while individual selection produces nothing but sin (“selfishness, cowardice and hypocrisy”). But it’s long been known that unrelated individuals can benefit from repeated cooperation with one another, so long as there are mechanisms in place to encourage reciprocity and punish betrayal. There is now evidence — from computational modeling, observations of real-world human interactions and laboratory studies — showing that our altruistic and eusocial choices are sensitive to past interactions with individuals and that we are inclined to reward cooperators and punish cheats and free-riders. This evidence suggests that group conflict is not the sole force that has shaped human eusociality. Wilson must be familiar with this research, but doesn’t acknowledge how it complicates his account. . . "

And Toast . . .

I offer my deepest appreciation and my most profound apologies to the plants and animals whose lives were forfeit for our good health this day.

We give thanks to the ranchers and the farmers, their workers and their hands whose skill, sweat and toil have brought forth this bounty from the Earth.

We are grateful to the workers in the fields who pick our food, the workers in the plants where our food is processed, the teamsters who carry it to market and the stockers and the checkers who offer it up for our selection.

We are particularly appreciative for those at this table who have prepared this food with love and affection for our enjoyment and nourishment this day.

We remember fondly those who the miles and circumstance keep from joining us today as we remember those who are no longer with us and are grateful for the time we have shared with them.

We enjoy the warmth and fellowship that surrounds this gathering as we share the fervent hope  That people the world over can share the good fortune, warm feeling and conviviality that  embraces this gathering.

(“Nonbeliever’s Grace” by Paul Diamond, who was inspired by a column in Ann Landers where an atheist asked what to say when asked to say “grace” before a meal)

Ahhh. . .

 . . . music . . .
 (from http://musicmagic.wordpress.com/2008/07/16/quotes-about-music/)
Were it not for music, we might in these days say, the Beautiful is dead.
– Benjamin Disraeli

Music is what feelings sound like.
– Author Unknown

Music is the poetry of the air.
– Richter

If I were to begin life again, I would devote it to music.  It is the only cheap and unpunished rapture upon earth.
- Sydney Smith

Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence in their opinions and lives that they have heard it.
– Henry David Thoreau

Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.
– Ludwig van Beethoven

I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours.  But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places.  Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality.
– H.A. Overstreet

My idea is that there is music in the air, music all around us; the world is full of it, and you simply take as much as you require.
– Edward Elgar

Music cleanses the understanding; inspires it, and lifts it into a realm which it would not reach if it were left to itself.
– Henry Ward Beecher

Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence.
– Robert Fripp

[P.S.  Bill Pratt is truly all those things (see pianogonzology 9/29/2014) 'extraordinaire'-make no mistake]

Honestly . . .

. . . can you always remember stuff like this? . . .

. . . I can't . . .

(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_solstice)
The summer solstice occurs when the tilt of a planet's semi-axis, in either the northern or the southern hemisphere, is most inclined toward the star (sun) that it orbits. Earth's maximum axial tilt toward the sun is 23° 26'. This happens twice each year, at which times the sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the north or the south pole.

The summer solstice occurs during a hemisphere's summer. This is northern solstice in the northern hemisphere and the southern solstice in the southern hemisphere. Depending on the shift of the calendar, the summer solstice occurs some time between December 20 and December 23 each year in the southern hemisphere and between June 20 and June 22 in the northern hemisphere.

When on a geographic pole, the sun reaches its greatest height, the moment of solstice, it can be noon only along that longitude which at that moment lies in the direction of the sun from the pole. For other longitudes, it is not noon. Noon has either passed or has yet to come. Hence the notion of a solstice day is useful. The term is colloquially used like midsummer to refer to the day on which solstice occurs. The summer solstice day has the longest period of daylight – except in the polar regions, where daylight is continuous, from a few days to six months around the summer solstice.

Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied among cultures, but most recognize the event in some way with holidays, festivals, and rituals around that time with themes of religion or fertility.

Solstice is derived from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).

Alternative . . .

. . . Thanksgiving "Prayers". . .

Dear Global Economy, we thank thee for thy economies of scale, thy professional specialization, and thy international networks of trade under Ricardo's Law of Comparative Advantage, without which we would all starve to death while trying to assemble the ingredients for such a dinner as this.  Amen.  - Eliezer Yudkowsky

Let us take a moment to think about where the food we are about to enjoy has come from and to acknowledge those who worked to bring us this food. Let us appreciate the earth, the sun, the air, and the water needed to nourish the plants and animals. Let us thank the farmer who cared for the plants and animals and the migrant worker who toiled to harvest the crops. Let us thank the laborer who processed the food, the truck driver who brought the food, and the grocery store workers who displayed it. Finally, let us thank our friends who prepared this meal and have provided us with the opportunity to be together and share each other’s company. - Herb Silverman

We return thanks to our mother, the earth which sustains us.  We return thanks to the rivers and streams, which supply us with water.  We return thanks to all herbs which furnish medicines for the cure of our diseases.  We return thanks to the moon and stars, which have given to us their light when the sun was gone.  We return thanks to the sun, that has looked upon the earth with a beneficent eye.  Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit, in Whom is embodied all goodness, and Who directs all things for the good of Her children.  - Iroquois Prayer

This food is the gift of the whole universe - the sky, and much hard work.  May we eat it in mindfulness, so as to be worthy to receive it.  We accept this food so that we may practice the path of understanding and love.
-Thich Nhat Hanh

In the spirit of humility we give thanks for all that is.  We thank the great spiritual beings who have shared their wisdom.  We thank our ancestors who brought us to where we are now.  We are grateful for the opportunity to walk this planet, to breathe the air, to taste the food, to experience sensations of a human body/mind, to share in this wonder that is life.  We are grateful for the natural world that supports us, for the community of humankind that enables us to do many wondrous things.  We are grateful that we are conscious, that as intelligent beings we can reflect upon the many gifts we have been given.  - Unknown

Got no checkbooks, got no banks.  Still I'd like to express my thanks - I got the sun in the morning and the moon and night.  _ Irving Berlin
