Innovators . . .

[Note to my 'note' yesterday- To be clear, the 'break' that I am taking is from daily blog postings. I will, in all likelihood, continue posting things as the spirit moves. Here's hoping you'll stay with me and as always, please let me know what's on YOUR mind.  Please don't stop listening to the music! Ciao.]

. . . There is no innovation and creativity without failure. Period.
- Brene Brown

(from Harpo Speaks by Harpo Marx)
". . . Being at liberty again, I gave this serious consideration. I asked Chico what he could do to break me into his field.  I couldn't have asked him at a better time. He was then working at a beer garden in Yorkville but he had just been asked to play in a nickelodeon across that street, where the piano player, a kid named George Gershwin, had been fired because customers complained his music hurt their ears. . . Consciousness . . .

. . . of stream

Positivity to temper, accompany, and inundate the empty hours;  facilitating a transcendence from this mere mortal coil with all its toil, trouble and injustice.

Or, in other words, here's some more music.

Care . . .

". . . All successful democracies rely on informal rules that, though not found in the constitution or any laws, are widely known and respected. In the case of American democracy, this has been vital. . . the unwritten rules of a half-court game of pickup basketball are familiar to anyone who has played it. . . Democracy, of course, is not street basketball. Democracies do have written rules (constitutions) and referees (the courts). But these work best, and survive longest, in countries where written constitutions are reinforced by their own unwritten rules of the game. These rules or norms serve as the soft guardrails of democracy, preventing day-to-day political competition from devolving into a no-holds-barred conflict. . . "

More . . .

 . . .  Star

Changing, modifying, tweaking. . .  the usual stuff.

This version of the song is played on a physical, Kawai, baby grand piano, my favorite instrument, although editing is more complex, so it is limited here. I prefer the organic experience of the real instrument which provides the ability to be more expressive.

Shining . . .

(from https://www.reddit.com/r/etymology/comments/28ofkq/when_did_the_word_star_begin_to_refer_to_a_famous/)
". . . In 1779 in England David Garrick was the first actor to be labeled a "star" by J. Warner, saying, "The little stars, who hid their diminished rays in his presence begin to abuse him. . . The term was in common use in the Music Hall Era. This is reflected in the slightly passe phrase "movie star" or "Hollywood star" to refer to the type of celebrity who is famous from cinema, not stage. . . The earliest uses all speak to brightness of the star. Thus "star" likely meant "stand-out performer." By the 1907 Music Hall War it was widely understood to mean "well-known performer.". . ."

Celestial Bodies . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star)
". . . A star is an astronomical object comprising a luminous spheroid of plasma held together by its gravity. The nearest star to Earth is the Sun. Many other stars are visible to the naked eye at night, but their immense distances from Earth make them appear as fixed points of light. The most prominent stars have been categorised into constellations and asterisms, and many of the brightest stars have proper names. Astronomers have assembled star catalogues that identify the known stars and provide standardized stellar designations. The observable universe contains an estimated 1022 to 1024 stars. Only about 4,000 of these stars are visible to the naked eye, all within the Milky Way galaxy. . ."

Human . . .

(from Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann)
". . . Let us call them the sinister possibilities of human nature in general that here come to light.  German human beings, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of them it is, who have perpetrated what humanity shudders at; and all that is German now stands forth as an abomination and a warning . . . We are present at the last gasp of a blood state which, as Luther put it, "took on its shoulders" immeasurable crimes; which roared and bellowed to the ravished and reeling masses proclamations cancelling all human rights . . . "

Tweaking . . .

I can be a fool just as well as anybody can.
Just a little rope and I'll hang myself like any other man.
I'm not so different from the rest.
So please don't put me to the test.
I don't get my kicks when I hurt you or I make you cry.
I can find the courage for anything I want to if I try.
I know I have to take the risk,
A strange dependency I guess.

It's a simple case of matter over mind.
It's a human race.
There are winners all the time.
Just a pretty face.
Such a pretty face.

I go walking right in her general direction.
I go walking without a fear of my detection.
And I've been called every name in the book
But I don't care about it.
Some kind of crook may be remorseful
But if you take a look, then you'll see
What kind of fool that I can be.

You looked at the world your own way, rose-colored spectacles,
Only heard the things that you chose,
Saw what you wanted to see.
You didn't look too hard at me,
Had no idea what I could be.
On the other hand in my case I knew I wanted you.
I could see the trust in your eyes,
A trust so far out of place.
You didn't see through my disguise.
It hit you right between the eyes.

Now the game I played is all over and done.
Though it hurt you so,
There's no way you could have won.
So it wasn't fair.
Do you think I care?

I'll do anything to take advantage
Of a situation thrown my way.
I'll move a mountain if I think I have to.
I'm moving mountains every day.

Call me anything that you want,
That's your prerogative.
Be as honest as you can be.
Make sure you hold nothing back.
I'll have to take it like a man.
I'll do it any way I can.
Odds I won't refute what you say.
I've heard it all before.
Yes I've heard it time and again
Because I've lived it and what's more.
It's just of part of who I am
It's more than every now and then.

Do you think I'll change? Can an old dog learn new tricks,
Turn my life around?
There's so much I'd have to fix.
No it can't be done.
I'll just have my fun.

Non-Plussed . . .

It's all too much, it's clear to me,
The escapades each day I see.
The things I hear and read about
Can drive one to extreme degree.
My fellow man, when not engaged
By enterprise; constructive days,
Is either one pathetic cuss
Or filthy-rich. I am non-plussed.

Church . . .

The church of music
Holds no ham and oyster suppers
We're all just deacons
With our boots upon the ground
Marching into mystery
In command but
Still can't quite see

The church of music
Won't require your weekly presence
You'll find it stays with you
No matter where you are
No dogmatic postulates
No demands on
Your fidelity

It can end the darkest night
Carry you through the hours
Know not if it’s wrong or right
Make no mistake
It’s divine
This church of mine

There are no fiery demons
In what I believe
It’s not for me to say
Who’s  what and where they go
All things flowing naturally
No controlling
Power over you or me

It can end the darkest night
Carry you through the hours
Know not if it’s wrong or right
Make no mistake
It’s divine
This church of mine

Stricly spiritual
No trace of any politics
Lurking in the mix or in the fabric
Only what is good
No room for hate and no deceit
Honesty
Sincerity will move you
And me

This church won’t interfere
With what you think or do
Your body and your mind are
Yours and yours alone
No one tells you what to say
No one criticizes
What you feel inside

It can heal the deepest wound
Shine a light in the darkness
Warm a chill in any room
Make no mistake
It’s divine
This church . . .
It can end the darkest night
Carry you through the hours
Know not if it’s wrong or right
Make no mistake
It’s divine
This church of mine

Running . . .

Of all the things there are to do,
There're hardly any that are funner,
Than running roads and eating lizards,
When you are a roadrunner.

Pianos . . .

On very special occasions
When celebrating felt right,
This place we’d go to,
With ambience and wine,
On a Saturday night.
Caricatures hung on the wall
Eavesdropping on our most intimate moments.
“I love you.”

It was essential to go there
To mark the passage of time
Between the dates we used to signify
The bond we shared and to dine.
Always served Angus A-1 prime
To patrons of each and every persuasion.
I loved you.

But now that place is all gone.
Where did our love go?
Where is the ambience and
McCafferty’s piano?

While you eat you’re serenaded
By some local musician
Playing bad renditions of the popular songs.
You sing along.

And so it ended.
Our passion somehow
Just faded away.
And likewise too,
That place we held diving
Became a dance club today.
The memories come charging in.
Sweet dreams and all the romancing related
Are gone now.

Well . . .

A joyous, celebratory melody by Jay Graboski of OHO which seems appropriate for posting during this, the holiday season. It's called 'Well I'll Be.'

Freeing . . .

(from https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/06/sports/soccer/qatar-and-russia-bribery-world-cup-fifa.html)
". . . After years of investigations and indictments, the United States Department of Justice . . . said for the first time that representatives working for Russia and Qatar had bribed FIFA officials to secure hosting rights for the World Cup in men’s soccer. . . . Prosecutors made the accusations in an indictment charging three media executives and a sports marketing company with a number of crimes, including wire fraud and money laundering, in connection with bribes to secure television and marketing rights for international soccer tournaments. . . "

". . . the culture in and around sports at all levels is consistently one of violence without consequence. Players from high school through to the pros seem to have a much higher chance of committing an over-the-line personal foul against another player in a game and suffering a suspension for a game or two than they do of committing an over-the-law offense against another human being in the real world and suffering any kind of meaningful legal consequences. . . These weren’t problems with just my teams, they were problems with virtually all teams. . . Despite the fact that I had very personal reasons to find the abusive behaviors of so many in professional and college sports especially abhorrent and despite the fact that I had professional reasons to stop supporting institutions who made a mockery of academic integrity, I chose to look the other way for a very long time in the name of indulging my favorite pastimes. It didn’t matter. . . Not keeping up with sports and not watching games has been a tremendous freeing up of my time, a much needed boon to my intellectual and creative development, a benefit to my psychological and physical health, and an overall worthwhile decision at this stage in my life. . ."
