Bend . . .

Inevitably we must move along
Irrespective of the past
But not forgetting it
Fortify yourself with it
It is the stuff of which you're made
And if it doesn't quite seem relevant
Quite possibly you haven't really lived

It's not always simple
It's not always easy
Some  precious things will be missed
But they will live on stubbornly
Others will remain
Though possibly on a modified scale
While the glory of new possibilities lies ahead

Power . . .

(from John Adams, by David McCullough, from Abigail Adams' correspondence with her husband)
". . . I am more and more convinced that man is a dangerous creature, and that power whether vested in many or few is ever grasping . . . The great fish swallow up the small and he who is most strenuous for the rights of the people, when vested with power, is as eager after the prerogatives of government. You tell me of degrees of perfection to which human nature is capable of arriving, and I believe it, but at the same time lament that our admiration should arise from the scarcity of the instances. . ."

Little . . .

. . . Men

The poet said "Trailing clouds of glory we come
and we go
What do we really know
Smiling so brightly
Betraying the years they have yet to try
Those little men with that glory
Riddles and bedtime stories
Little men with that glory in their eyes

Innocence and wisdom coexist inside their minds
Together with appreciation for the things we miss
In our haste and our big business
Always in awe of the wheels spinning round
And a laugh for the foolish things big men do

The poet said "Trailing clouds of glory we come
and we go
What do we really know
Smiling so brightly
Betraying the years they have yet to try
Those little men with that glory
Riddles and bedtime stories
Little men with that glory in their eyes

Everybody thinks about the world and what the future brings
Who really knows the plan and all its subtleties
We're really smart at least that's what we think
Going our own way in blissful retreat
From the prospect of seeing things too clearly.

The poet said "Trailing clouds of glory we come
and we go
What do we really know
Smiling so brightly
Betraying the years they have yet to try
Those little men with that glory
Riddles and bedtime stories
Little men with that glory in their eyes

Process . . .

. . . for nomination . . .

(from http://www.cfr.org/elections/us-presidential-nominating-process/p37522)
". . . The presidential nominating process in the United States is one of the most complex, lengthy, and expensive in the world. Every four years, presidential candidates compete in a series of state contests during the winter and spring before the general election to gain their party’s nomination. At stake in each contest—either a primary or caucus—is a certain number of delegates, or individuals who represent their states at national party conventions. The candidate who accumulates a majority of his or her party’s delegates during the months-long process wins the nomination. . . Many presidential candidates begin campaigning informally in early-voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire more than a year before their primary events. In 2016, the primary calendar kicked off on February 1, when both the Republican and Democratic parties held their Iowa caucuses, and ends at the national conventions in July, when party delegates officially select their nominee. However, since the parties made the process more transparent in the 1970s, presumptive nominees have often emerged much earlier, sometimes only after a few weeks of voting.election. . ."

The Resilience . . .

. . . of the human spirit is amazing.

Fall seven times, stand up eight.
-Japanese Proverb

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.
-Confucius

It is said an eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him with the words, 'And this, too, shall pass away.' How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!
-Abraham Lincoln

Engrave this Quote Man never made any material as resilient as the human spirit.
-Bernard Williams

Power . . .

It seems that every human being harbors to some extent, though not without exception and not all act on it, a desire to control, or shall we say hold power over others.  This holds true whether in the confines of a professional office setting or in groups such as clubs and organized religious sects. My first eye-opening experience with this came with my first, full-time job.  Some people there eventually were eventually promoted to supervisory positions.  Upon attaining that lofty (in their eyes) status, they became just like some others higher in the authority chain who did not necessarily practice ideal organizational management skills.  Some even adopted behaviors towards subordinates about which they formerly and vociferously complained.  "How can this be?" I thought. . . and still do.

"Those who have been intoxicated with power... Can never willingly abandon it."
– Edmund Burke

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."
 -Abraham Lincoln

"Washing one's hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral."
 -Paulo Freire

"The measure of a man is what he does with power."
 -Plato

"It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power."
 -David Brin

"Ultimately, the only power to which man should aspire is that which he exercises over himself."
 -Elie Weisel

"For the powerful, crimes are those that others commit."
 -Noam Chomsky

New Stuff . . .

. . . April 8th . . .
Fifteen minutes of glory, maybe less
What I wouldn't give for the chance to confess
All my intimate secrets
All my hopes and my desires
I don't care just how valid you think that they are
They've been mine for a long long while
And I'm not ashamed of them

Shut up Joe
How do you really know what's going down
How can you tell if there's a problem somewhere to be found
We all need to gather round
To help everybody else to see
That running your mouth aloud
Makes it that much more difficult
For you and me and our integrity

Went to work at the factory at fourteen
Thought I'd finish my schooling sometime in between
Drunken weekends and futile street fights
And the visits to my best girl
But the time slipped away
I've got bills here to pay
I've got small ones depending on me
My vision is limited

Shut up Joe
How do you really know what's going down
How can you tell if there's a problem somewhere to be found
We all need to gather round
To help everybody else to see
That running your mouth aloud
Makes it that much more difficult
For you and me and our integrity

All my life I've known I'd want to say
Something to my fellow man today
Couldn't let the facts get in the way

We weren't that well acquainted never were
An occasional run-in we preferred
There's one thing that we both believe in
Heard it over and over again
It was something about all the fondness we felt
How the heart can't miss what's not around
If the mind doesn't value it

Shut up Joe
How do you really know what's going down
How can you tell if there's a problem somewhere to be found
We all need to gather round
To help everybody else to see
That running your mouth aloud
Makes it that much more difficult
For you and me and our integrity

Success. . .

I couldn’t wait for success, so I went ahead without it.
-Jonathan Winters

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
― Winston Churchill

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”
― Confucius

“All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure. ”
― Mark Twain

“A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.”
― Bob Dylan

“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.”
― Leonardo da Vinci

“Eighty percent of success is showing up.”
― Woody Allen

“He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction.”
- Bessie A. Stanley
