Little . . .

. . . Men

The poet said "Trailing clouds of glory we come
and we go
What do we really know
Smiling so brightly
Betraying the years they have yet to try
Those little men with that glory
Riddles and bedtime stories
Little men with that glory in their eyes

Innocence and wisdom coexist inside their minds
Together with appreciation for the things we miss
In our haste and our big business
Always in awe of the wheels spinning round
And a laugh for the foolish things big men do

The poet said "Trailing clouds of glory we come
and we go
What do we really know
Smiling so brightly
Betraying the years they have yet to try
Those little men with that glory
Riddles and bedtime stories
Little men with that glory in their eyes

Everybody thinks about the world and what the future brings
Who really knows the plan and all its subtleties
We're really smart at least that's what we think
Going our own way in blissful retreat
From the prospect of seeing things too clearly.

The poet said "Trailing clouds of glory we come
and we go
What do we really know
Smiling so brightly
Betraying the years they have yet to try
Those little men with that glory
Riddles and bedtime stories
Little men with that glory in their eyes

Meanwhile . . .

. . . the successful poet (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) also worked full time at Harvard University, lectured, and directed the Modern Languages department. The department was meant to consist of four men teaching in their native languages: Spanish, French, Italian, and German. When a position was vacant, Henry had to fill in. Frustrated with his situation, Longfellow wrote to his father in September of 1839, "But my work here grows quite intolerable; and unless they make some change, I will leave them, with or without anything to do. I will not consent to have my life crushed out of me so. I had rather live a while on bread and water." Longfellow managed to tolerate the situation for another 15 years.

By 1854 Longfellow was able to resign his teaching post at Harvard; he had become, at age forty-seven, one of America's first self-sustaining authors. For the next seven years, Henry was able to pour his energies into his writing, unimpeded by teaching duties and supported by the love of his family.

(from The Song of Hiawatha)

By the shore of Gitche Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
At the doorway of his wigwam,
In the pleasant Summer morning,
Hiawatha stood and waited.
All the air was full of freshness,
All the earth was bright and joyous,
And before him, through the sunshine,
Westward toward the neighboring forest
Passed in golden swarms the Ahmo,
Passed the bees, the honey-makers,
Burning, singing in the sunshine.
Bright above him shone the heavens,
Level spread the lake before him;
From its bosom leaped the sturgeon,
Sparkling, flashing in the sunshine;
On its margin the great forest
Stood reflected in the water,
Every tree-top had its shadow

Juvenal . . .

. . . kind-of. . .

OHO - SEPTEMBER 6, 2013

(Paraphrasing Roman satirist and poet Juvenal )… The population has become complacent and easily satisfied with the mundane — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just THREE things:

Music begins at 8:00 (on the patio)

Tails?. . .

(from the desk of Rod Deacey, Frederick (MD) area impresario, bluesman, singer/songwriter, poet, gentleman and scholar)

". . . The featured singer-songwriter at Brewer’s Alley Songwriters’ Showcase on Monday, August 26, is Maryland resident, frequent Nashville visitor and studio musician JACK BOND, who regularly returns to Music City to record, co-write and to perform at the famous Bluebird Café and other venues. Jack’s songwriting credits include the title cut on Roy Buchanan’s album, “That’s What I'm Here For.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGLL_yzNkZ0

In his Maryland performances, Jack is known for his rich baritone voice and exceptional guitar work, both on his own compositions and his covers of classic rock and country songs. We have seen him many times accompanying other performers here, such as our friend DULCIE TAYLOR (now in California; hi Dulcie!), but it is always a treat to hear Jack on his own! Ron put a video link of Jack playing a Telecaster up on Facebook, but he will be playing an acoustic for us…

The gonzo piano prelude will be played by our favorite piano workout instructor ROCKIN’ RAY JOZWIAK, http://www.rayjozwiak.com/  who keeps the embryonic grand in shape with his rigorous monthly routines – a dose of Oscar Peterson, an infusion of Thelonious Monk and a liberal application of Keith Jarrett and the keys are ready to play themselves out of any corner… Come and hear Ray put them through their paces, including finding them some especially difficult corners from which to escape… Don't be scared off by the jazz references, Ray is also a highly respected classical composer; he has even been known to wear tails to play, and he doesn't smoke funny tobacco…  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPqB_8BDXUk. . . I love. . .

. . . to speak with Leonard(o). . .

(from wikipedia.com)
". . . Leonard Norman Cohen is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet, and novelist. His work often explores religion, isolation, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships. Cohen has been inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour.

While giving the speech at Cohen's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 10 March 2008, Lou Reed described Cohen as belonging to the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters."

The critic Bruce Elder wrote an assessment of Cohen's overall career in popular music, writing, "[Cohen is] one of the most fascinating and enigmatic. . .singer/songwriters of the late '60s. . . [and] has retained an audience across four decades of music-making. . . Second only to Bob Dylan (and perhaps Paul Simon) [in terms of influence], he commands the attention of critics and younger musicians more firmly than any other musical figure from the 1960s who is still working at the outset of the 21st century."

The Academy of American Poets has commented more broadly on Cohen's overall career in the arts, including his work as a poet, novelist, and songwriter, stating that "[Cohen's] successful blending of poetry, fiction, and music is made most clear in Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs, published in 1993, which gathered more than two hundred of Cohen's poems . . .several novel excerpts, and almost sixty song lyrics. . .While it may seem to some that Leonard Cohen departed from the literary in pursuit of the musical, his fans continue to embrace him as a Renaissance man who straddles the elusive artistic borderlines." . . . "

Music . . .

. . . is like poetry
Robert considered himself a poet;  an amateur poet, but no less a serious one.  And Robert, by personality, allotted the proper amount of gravity to all that his poetry involved, as he did in everything he undertook.

Deep in his heart, Robert knew that criticism was truly beneficial to he who chooses to exploit it wisely.  Wise exploitation, he had learned from his many years of devotion to the poetic art, included the option to dismiss, within reason and with good cause, criticism from which he could gain nothing or that which was clearly malicious, unfounded, or merely a self-promotional exercise by a critic. But still less-than-favorable criticism still rankled him;  a least for a period of time.

At the Poetry Night gala event, Robert was still replaying the latest negative review in his mind, in spite of the fact that it had been published well over a month before.  He was, for all practical purposes, over it.   The critic had even stressed the unique, freshness that he found in Robert's work and that it contained such great potential.  Still though, Robert clung to the dismissive, condescending snipes the critic had taken at the heart and soul that Robert had taken such pains to record on the printed page.

Through, what seemed to be a fuzzy, poorly-focused camera shot from an art film, Robert saw the emcee introducing the next reading and was able to just-barely decipher his own name in the garbled monologue that accompanied the vision.  Always prepared and always the consummate artist and professional, Robert rarely had problems at readings.  Today for some reason, he had no poem.
He simply had nothing to read.  He had no book, no manuscript, no notes.

The room was silent. . .
