Marching into mystery
In command but
Still can't quite see

The church of music
Won't require your weekly presence

No matter where you are
No dogmatic postulates
No demands on
Your fidelity

It can end the darkest night
Carry you through the hours
Know not if it’s wrong or right
Make no mistake
It’s divine
This church of mine

There are no fiery demons
In what I believe
It’s not for me to say
Who’s what and where they go
All things flowing naturally
No controlling
Power over you or me

Stricly spiritual
No trace of any politics
Lurking in the mix or in the fabric
Only what is good
No room for hate and no deceit
Honesty
Sincerity will move you
And me

This church won’t interfere
With what you think or do
Your body and your mind are
Yours and yours alone
No one tells you what to say
No one criticizes
What you feel inside

Rest . . .

Memories of places, people and things
Flow abundantly when you least require them
And most commonly when you're trying to sleep

Embarrassing, humiliating, unpleasant
Or simply unwanted adventures await
The unwitting and uncontrollable mind during slumber

The school bus is turning the corner
When you cannot find your pants
And breakfast is still on the table

What appears to be your childhood home
Becomes the setting for an episode
Of interpersonal intrigue

An adolescent infatuation
Comes irritatingly to somnambulant life
As you work from REM to delta to rejuvenate

The experience can leave one 'unrested',
To say the least, or even bring fatigue
To your 'rested' self with the morning light

My Head . . .

. . . or more specifically, the contents therein, provide me with a wealth of entertainment. Musing on the past, present, life, death, the world, the country . . . it's endless. Today, for some reason, the past took front and center, and monopolized the activities of the grey matter for a portion of the early morning hours. The past and my place in it and the person I was in that place back then would pretty much sum it up. I was timid, unsure. So many personalities come to mind; personalities that I envied for your sheer joy, their fearlessness, their humor and their confidence. Then I wonder, where are they now? What are they like now? Are they still joyful, fearless, funny and confident?

Things That Cross. . .

. . . the mind. . .

. . . Awhile back, when my songwriting was more prolific (by choice- not by inspiration), intentionally for educational purposes, I wrote a song about one of the most frivolous topics of which one could write a song. Simply titled "Butter", the lyrics rationalized the act of throwing the leftover breakfast toast out on the lawn for the birds. Below is a fragment of the melody of the song, sans lyrics, as it turned out to be, in my view, a catchy tune with much potential for improvisation. . .

Direction . . .

I've always admired people who know what they want. More specifically, people who know their mind, what they want to accomplish and what they must do to accomplish it. Sometimes I feel like I'm one of them. Sometimes though, I do not. I remember as a student, encountering other students who wanted to be nuclear physicists, microbiologists or structural engineers. What vision! What determination! What a wonderful thing!
