Nomination . . .

(from https://www.facebook.com/ohomusic)
OHO's instrumental version of "Scared Money (Don't Win)" from their all instrumental album, Where Words Do Not Reach, is a nominee for Best Instrumental Rock Song for this year's JPF Awards (Just Plain Folks). And this song, one of the finalists culled from 17,400 albums and 240,000 songs. Not the Grammies...but something. http://www.jpfolks.com/2017awards.php?

OHO Always great to be acknowledged. Piqued my memory of overhearing a gambler say, "Scared money don't win," then going home and writing a song about taking risks. Former OHO engineer and bassist, Steve Carr, made a stripped-down mix (sans vocals) for our audition for the Star Search TV show back in 1989. The singers had to sing live over this backing track while the band pretended to play instruments (for those of you who have the Bricolage CD/DVD set, you may view our performance of this song on that DVD. Thanks to Bennett Davis' creativity, he was able to match the master with the VHS soundtrack and improve the fidelity significantly.) Later, when assembling the program featured on 2015's "Where Words Do Not Reach" album, since there were no instrumentals by this version of the band (1985-1992), I retrieved the master of this very version from our archives and overdubbed an instrumental (guitar) version of the vocal melody line a la The Ventures, employing a sustainor-pickup-equipped Fernandes Elite model through the "Bloody Finger" distortion pedal. Voila! Who woulda thought this would be a contender? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Orchids to the band.

Compellence . . .

. . . I can't help it.  I'm compelled . . .

". . . Bernie is the underdog, and he’s going to be vastly outspent by Secretary Clinton. 96% of the time, the candidate spending the most money wins a race. If he’s going to secure the Democratic nomination, leverage and insurance will be needed. 1,000,000+ voters pledged to write-in Senator Sanders will be a compelling argument for some Democratic primary voters.  Bloomberg Politics reports, “in Iowa and New Hampshire, with four-fifths of likely Democratic voters in both states saying they think Clinton is destined to be the nominee.” A write-in campaign is designed to undermine that “destiny.” Call it arm twisting, call it “breaking eggs,” call it compellence; we call it leverage on Democratic primary voters and insurance against corrupted super delegates “pledged” to another candidate before one primary vote is cast. A write-in strategy is an innovative idea to help a candidate secure a party’s nomination. . ."

Process . . .

. . . for nomination . . .

(from http://www.cfr.org/elections/us-presidential-nominating-process/p37522)
". . . The presidential nominating process in the United States is one of the most complex, lengthy, and expensive in the world. Every four years, presidential candidates compete in a series of state contests during the winter and spring before the general election to gain their party’s nomination. At stake in each contest—either a primary or caucus—is a certain number of delegates, or individuals who represent their states at national party conventions. The candidate who accumulates a majority of his or her party’s delegates during the months-long process wins the nomination. . . Many presidential candidates begin campaigning informally in early-voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire more than a year before their primary events. In 2016, the primary calendar kicked off on February 1, when both the Republican and Democratic parties held their Iowa caucuses, and ends at the national conventions in July, when party delegates officially select their nominee. However, since the parties made the process more transparent in the 1970s, presumptive nominees have often emerged much earlier, sometimes only after a few weeks of voting.election. . ."

Look . . .

. . . it's important . . .

(from http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-sanders-gabbard-idUSMTZSAPEC2S9JDNKG)
". . . "I think it’s most important for us, as we look at our choices as to who our next commander in chief will be, is to recognize the necessity to have a commander in chief who has foresight, who exercises good judgment," (Tulsi) Gabbard, a U.S. representative for Hawaii, said on NBC's "Meet the Press." . . . Gabbard, one of five vice chairs, and her committee colleagues have butted heads over a thin debate schedule in the months leading to Democratic voting contests for the party's nomination, with Gabbard calling for the group to add more debates to the calendar. . . Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont, is competing with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination to run for president on Nov. 8. Critics have said the scheduling of the debates has favored Clinton, who is better known than Sanders and is favored to win the nominating contest. . . "

I'd Like To Thank. . .

. . . (getting a little ahead of myself. . . )

The Washington Area Music Awards recognize significant career achievements by area musicians. Nominations and balloting come from the WAMA membership. Past show participants include Emmylou Harris, Joan Jett, The Clovers, The Orioles, Bo Diddley, Jorma Kaukonen, Jimmy Dean, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker, Sweet Honey in the Rock and OHO.

Also announced at the Wammies are each year's inductees to the Hall of Fame.  Deadline: Midnight, Friday October 25

You can nominate artists who are not WAMA members, but you do need to be a current WAMA member in order for your ballot to count. Not a member? Join or renew at Membership.
