G1 . . .

(Regarding "The Thought Behind the Songs")

Hi Folks,
This coming week I’ll go down to take a close look at Germano’s sound system.
It looks like guitars with direct outs is the way to go. Anyone have a problem with that?
Please bring guitar cords.
I’ll know more later, but please let me know if you have a direct box you can bring.
Ray, are you cool with a Yamaha G1? No need to bring a keyboard?
It looks like we can run voices and instruments through the Peavy. I’ll bring a mic for me.
I don’t know how dependent you are on a stage monitor, maybe we put the most dependent person in front of it. I don’t have any stage monitors. Having an extra one or two would be very helpful. Please let me know if you have one and which one.

If they don’t have a Bosendorfer Concert Grand 290 Imperial the Yamaha will do. :)
(Hell, my Kawai is only 5’2”) But seriously, any acoustic piano (tuned and maintained) is a treat
for my purposes.

Do you hear the silence?”. . . Cummings continued, “This is a town of House Republicans conducting no oversight of President Trump. Zero. That is what it sounds like when they abdicate their duty under the Constitution.” . . . He further added that House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz “has not lifted one finger” to investigate Flynn’s Russian ties. . ."

Be Thinking . . .

I used to own one of these babies. Tremendous sound, and I was only pushing a Farfisa Fast IV through it. Played a B3 with a Leslie at a dive in Curtis Bay for a brief period with my current OHO bandmates in the mid-seventies. It was a (sonic) blast.

Years . . .

. . . ago . . .

. . . my friend Bob, also a musician, alerted me to the fact that some jazz players, mainly pianists such as McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea, voiced chords in unique and interesting ways, a fact with which I was quite unfamiliar. At the time mind you, I was entering the twilight of my years of accordion lessons and listening to art/prog-rock bands like Jethro Tull and Gentle Giant. The lessons providing invaluable theory experience and an unrivaled discipline in practice and dedication; the art/prog providing tremendous inspiration and motivation to create; although at the time, I was quite unable to create the kinds of things I would very much have like to created. Nevertheless, this unique voicing of chords, one tactic of which Bob was very explicit, was the use of fourths - resulting in a slightly non-conventional, yet pleasing and ever-adaptable sound as opposed to a major triad or some inversion of same. In any case, although I didn't fully grasp the enormity of this discovery at the time, I did attempt to employ it and have incorporated it into my musical thoughts and deeds ever since. One such composition that utilizes the concept is, as of yet tentatively titled, posted here in all its undecided and raw, new-born glory . . .

Q & A . . .

. . . for OHO

Q - I live in the southern part of Maryland, right on the border of DC and MD. I write for local Okinawan interest articles for the Okinawa Times in Okinawa and ever since I found and bought your tin can set album of Okinawa, I have been wondering if you had some personal connection to the island. Would you mind telling me your story? Please excuse me if you were asked the question many times, but I have been unable to find anything, as a mysterious band you are. Hope to hear from you.

A - The band were brainstorming for a title. We wanted a title where the "OHO" vowel sound also sounded in the title. The bassist's father was an American soldier who was stationed in Okinawa, and he had a black silk jacket with your island embroidered on it, which we hung in the studio for inspiration. So, while not totally random, there is only this fabricated connection to the music. Little Wing of Refugees, a German record label, apparently took its country's status as a Japanese ally more seriously; & so you have all the South Pacific war imagery in their version of the release.

BTW OHO stands for the 1st initials of the last names of the band's 3 founding members; what does "OHO" mean in Japanese?

Playground . . .

Teaching for the future . . .

One father is supervising the recreation of his young son at the neighborhood playground on a warm, sunny, spring afternoon. The child is totally absorbed in his activities on the swing set, climbing bars and sliding board alone, in sequence and then back again. The father finds that his participation has metamorphosed from a formerly active playing partner/spotter/parent hovering around or actually physically on the equipment itself, into a passive overseer on the sidelines. Eventually a group of four or five adolescent males tumble haphazardly down the block directly across the street from the playground. The bright, crystalline Sunday atmosphere is shattered by a harsh ringing (to the father) of a string of current and colorful profanity followed by uproarious laughter on the part of the group. The young boy at the playground is distracted from his joyful reverie by the laughter an looks up in the direction of the young men in the distance. The father is somewhat, but not noticeably to his son, perturbed by the events.

Should the father:

A. Retrieve his child from the playground and march furious and determined to the group and immediately lecture the teenagers on the inappropriateness of their verbal onslaught with his son’s attention (and maybe or maybe not, his interest) captured by the unusual development but absorbing all aspects of it (including the profanity, which his father has repeated in the course of the harangue)?

B. Quizzically and humorously suggest to his young son that, since the sound of the ice cream truck’s bells was perceived in the distant direction of home, he believed the two of them would greatly benefit from the pursuance and overtaking of that very truck with the object being the purchase and consumption of a delightfully cool and satisfying ice cream?

". . . Sound is the energy things produce when they vibrate (move back and forth quickly). If you bang a drum, you make the tight skin vibrate at very high speed (it's so fast that you can't usually see it), forcing the air all around it to vibrate as well. As the air moves, it carries energy out from the drum in all directions. Eventually, even the air inside your ears starts vibrating—and that's when you begin to perceive the vibrating drum as a sound. In short, there are two different aspects to sound: there's a physical process that produces sound energy to start with and sends it shooting through the air, and there's a separate psychological process that happens inside our ears and brains, which convert the incoming sound energy into sensations we interpret as noises, speech, and music. . .

Sound is like light in some ways: it travels out from a definite source (such as an instrument or a noisy machine), just as light travels out from the Sun or a light bulb. But there are some very important differences between light and sound as well. We know light can travel through a vacuum because sunlight has to race through the vacuum of space to reach us on Earth. Sound, however, cannot travel through a vacuum: it always has to have something to travel through (known as a medium), such as air, water, glass, or metal. . ."

Nose . . .

Steve Turre, who served several stints in Kirk’s bands, assembled a group featuring multi-reedist James Carter for the 2004 Kirk tribute album, The Spirits Up Above (HighNote), and led the all-star band last December at Saint Peter’s Church in New York City that paid tribute to Kirk close to the 30th anniversary of his death. Turre argues that only when people turn away from the visual—and Kirk’s videos are popular items on YouTube—and focus on the aural will they fully grasp Kirk’s achievements. “It’s all about listening,” Turre insists, “though I don’t think kids are taught that today. When I first encountered him, I’d just listen and go with the flow. We used to go up to his hotel room and listen to records in the dark. He was sightless, so he didn’t need the lights. It made me concentrate on the sound. It took me inside Rahsaan’s world and allowed me to experience music as he did.

“Yeah, the unusual aspects of his shows were amazing, but I didn’t let that stop me from hearing the music. His shows were unconventional, but only because he was being himself. It was all about feeling; it wasn’t all mechanical and contrived; it wasn’t different for different’s sake. It wasn’t for an intellectual concept; it was just Rahsaan being Rahsaan.” . . . "
