. . . if perfect is what you want. But even if that IS what you want, will you ever achieve it? Is ANYTHING really ever perfect anyway. I practice to develop ideas and to physically workout the fingers. Perfection is much too good in the way that Broadway musicals contain too much singing and dancing. Also, perfection implies objectivity. My music, as I believe of all music, is strictly subjective. So here I go. 'Practicing' again. This time reviewing some (what I think are) interesting changes that comprise my tune 'Wisdom'.
How often have you thought, "Hey, could I be a songwriter? I get these ideas from time to time. Sometimes words or phrases just pop into my head. I never write them down because, well, I'm not a songwriter." Really? Why NOT?
You might be surprised to learn that that's just one of the many way in which songwriters collect their song ideas. How many ways ARE there? Find out this coming Tuesday night at Germano's.
"The Thoughts Behind The Songs" at Germano's cabaret brings you close to three seasoned writers and a jazz pianist as they explain the process that brings their music to life.
Join me and Ellis Woodward, John M. Seay, Sahffi Lynne and Ray Jozwiak as they explain the process that preceded each of their songs. Ask questions! Don't be surprised if there's a different process for each song. Armed with this information, who knows what you could become!?!? Tuesday March 28th. Tuesday night means light traffic and easy parking. Germano's 300 S. High St. in Little Italy. Come for dinner and the show. Doors open at 6pm. The show starts at 7:30pm. There's a $10 charge in addition to whatever pleases you from Germano's very tasty menu. (I have personal experience with the menu.) Tickets are available for a limited time online here: http://bit.ly/2jguMpX At some point, if there are any seats left, you'll have to call Germano's directly. 410.752.4515 See you there? and bring a pad and pencil to take notes......
. . . That is ideas for songs/compositions/pieces of music . . .
. . . but these days I feel as though I cannot find/make enough time to properly develop them. The reasons are many, varied and boring. But they do say we MAKE time for those things for which we really want to make time. . .
. . . This idea has been floating around my consciousness for a few months now and continues to evolve although it may finally be taking some form now . . .
(of course titles, like the ideas themselves, continue to evolve also_

". . . Women who choose careers over motherhood are trailblazers in some parts of the world. But in Turkey they're "deficient" — at least according to the nation's president. . . is the latest in a series of remarks by the leader of a key U.S. ally that has sparked outrage and fear among liberals and human rights activists, who allege he's leading the country down a path to conservative Islam. . . "A woman who abstains from maternity by saying 'I am working' means that she is actually denying her femininity," Erdogan said in a widely reported speech in Istanbul on Sunday. . . Erdogan — who was prime minister for 11 years before becoming president in 2014 — said Muslim families should not engage in birth control or family planning. He has come out against cesareans, equated birth control with treason, and opined that women should avoid laughing in public — all the while using his strong Muslim faith to justify his ideas. . . "

(from Joseph and his Brothers by Thomas Mann, translation by Josesph E. Woods)
". . . That occurred everywhere among men, and everywhere men fretted whether they still had an understanding of both the Lord and the times - even though that also led here and there to the most awkward sort of knowledge and even though Jacob's inherited ideas about the Lord provided him with the most refined and exhausting means for testing the worrisome question about the extent to which man's usages and customs could lag behind the will and development of that same Lord.
All the same, how very close at hand error constantly lurked here as well. One need not even think of Laban, left behind in the land of origins, and of how he put his little son in a jar. He had simply lacked any awareness of the problem - for instance, of how custom could become abomination. . ."

It's very difficult to be clever, creative or witty on command. The mundane has as way of sapping one of these abilities in addition to sapping the time from a given day. But when consumed by a particularly challenging situation at the office, a leisure day heavily scheduled with necessary (or unnecessary for that matter) errands, it seems very easy to recognize a brilliant observation or a wittily perceptive notion. . . but alas no time or ability to otherwise record it. Oh sure, I could keep a journal. I always vow to make note of such moments in an email or other virtual notebook. But for some damned reason, it rarely happens. So this is today's non-blog bitching about my dearth of ideas and/or my simple lack of creativity.

. . . is like writing songs. Well, it is kinda'. . .
Before you really have anything, you have some pretty good ideas about what you want in the end. So you get started and before you know it, you're working your butt off to take care of all the developments. And before you're ever really finished with ONE, another comes along and you find you're doing the same thing all over again AND at the same time you're still working on the other one. Before you know, you find that you sincerely like them individually and they can stand alone without you (and without each other too) and you begin to exhale a sigh of relief. But alas, you recognize something that still needs your attention and, of course, you are more than happy to devote additional effort because you know that if you give all you've got, that (those) song(s) will provide pure musical to many and all kinds of others all by themselves for a long, long time. It's a rewarding endeavor that brings endless joy and gratification. But, and although some people make it look easy while others only do it half-assed, it is hard work.

(from Wikipedia.com)
". . . The Social Gospel movement is a Protestant Christian intellectual movement that was most prominent in the early 20th century United States and Canada. The movement applied Christian ethics to social problems, especially issues of social justice such as excessive wealth, poverty, alcoholism, crime, racial tensions, slums, bad hygiene, child labor, inadequate labor unions, poor schools, and the danger of war. Theologically, the Social Gospellers sought to operationalize the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:10): "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven." They typically were post-millennialist; that is, they believed the Second Coming could not happen until humankind rid itself of social evils by human effort. Social Gospel leaders were predominantly associated with the liberal wing of the Progressive Movement and most were theologically liberal, although they were typically conservative when it came to their views on social issues. Important leaders include Richard T. Ely,Josiah Strong, Washington Gladden, and Walter Rauschenbusch.
Although most scholars agree that the Social Gospel movement peaked in the early 20th century, there is disagreement over when the movement began to decline, with some asserting that the destruction and trauma caused by World War I left many disillusioned with the Social Gospel's ideals while others argue that World War I actually stimulated the Social Gospelers' reform efforts. Theories regarding the decline of the Social Gospel after World War I often cite the rise of neo-orthodoxy as a contributing factor in the movement's decline. Many of the Social Gospel's ideas reappeared in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. "Social Gospel" principles continue to inspire newer movements such as Christians Against Poverty. . . "
It's time for some of these ideas to reappear. . . again!
