Whining . . .

. . . a little . . .

Not only do we have to cultivate the seed of ideas and form the words and musical context in which to frame them, we have to either 1. be able to present (perform) the product (composition) or 2. secure the talents of a performer to adequately get the point of the effort across. Then, we must amass the resources and/or master the skills necessary, and invest the time to capture the performance in a medium in order to be able to present the product easily to members of the public (audience, consumers). After that, we must market, post/upload/distribute either physically or digitally the performance product to potential distribution entities and the general music-purchasing public (if we can find them).  And this, all, must be done simultaneously and continually in order to remain vital. I'm not complaining, mind you, but this 'passion' with all of its joy, fulfillment, satisfaction, fun and amusement does involve a substantial amount of 'work'.

But it is all part and parcel of this . . .

Questions . . .

. . . I would like to ask

. . . So many people
I no longer see
nor (with whom I) interact

Like, "Didn't we have fun?"
and "What happened to our youth?"
Like, "Why did you punch me?",
and "Do you still punch people?"
Like, "Did you continue in music?'
and "What are you singing now?"
Like, "Where did you two meet?"
and "Any regrets on not continuing your education?"
Like, "Have you considered all the facts?"
and "Do you know that changing your view is not a character flaw?
Like, "Did you consider the details of her personal life?"

. . . and "Did you realize the human being is the most valuable?"

Leading . . .

(from A Higher Loyalty; Truth, Lies, and Leadership by James Comey)
". . . And then there was a man named Harry Howell. . . During my junior and senior years of high school, I worked for Harry at a large grocery store near Allendale. I didn't make much money stocking shelves, retrieving carts, and working the ash register, maybe four dollars an hour but I loved my job. That was in large part due to the kind of leader he was. . . Somehow he created an environment that was both demanding and incredibly fun. He suppressed a smile at our silliness- just letting the corner of his mouth turn up slightly so we could see his amusement- and told us bluntly when our work wasn't good enough. We loved him. But we also feared him, in a healthy way. Because he made us feel important, because he so obviously cared about what he was doing and about us, we desperately wanted to please him. . ."

My Head . . .

. . . or more specifically, the contents therein, provide me with a wealth of entertainment. Musing on the past, present, life, death, the world, the country . . . it's endless.  Today, for some reason, the past took front and center, and monopolized the activities of the grey matter for a portion of the early morning hours. The past and my place in it and the person I was in that place back then would pretty much sum it up. I was timid, unsure. So many personalities come to mind; personalities that I envied for your sheer joy, their fearlessness, their humor and their confidence. Then I wonder, where are they now?  What are they like now?  Are they still joyful, fearless, funny and confident?

GOOGLE? . . .

The Year . . .

. . . of living sloppily . . .
. . . A weekend here, a weekend there, and pretty soon you're talking about months. Trips on alternating weekends to la casa en la playa result in perpetual packing.  At least packing something. A duly designated corner serves the purpose of a staging area for things like a drill; an occasional crockpot and/or panini maker; a bottle (or two or three) of wine; coats, jackets, hats or shoes that make be appropriate for the current forecast and maybe small furniture items, a lamp or a storage box. It may make the local residence a bit more unkempt than previously, but it sure is fun.

The World . . .

. . . was my oyster . . .

. . . as full of wonder and joy; as carefree; as full of potential but more importantly, full of fun. With a bicycle practically a permanent part of my anatomy, the neighborhood provided (what seemed like) endless miles to explore, numerous friends with whom many adventures were undertaken. Safe, secure, content and not a care in the world. . . except for possibly 'in which direction do I ride today?' One day, with some friends (who sometimes possessed less-than-noble motives), my bike and I ventured to the property of a nearby box-manufacturing facility. In the yard of the property, which was not secured by fence, wall or canine representatives, were stored rolls of paper (a necessary component of cardboard boxes) of all sizes and weights. For some reason which does not readily or otherwise come to mind mind now, we dismounted our vehicles and came in personal contact to a relatively small roll which was probably about four and a half feet tall, not very big in diameter, yet quite heavy; a fact which I was later to discover first-hand.  Our close contact with the object eventually involved changing its position from vertical to horizontal. As we proceeded in our endeavor, the roll of paper somehow managed to attain its horizontal orientation upon the tip of the big toe on my right foot. Upon my return home and my walk through the living room where my parents were watching their evening television, I resorted to limping somewhat to relieve the pain of the injury I had sustained. When questioned about my unusual method of walking, I assured Mom and Dad that nothing was wrong.  This for two reasons:  1. I was hoping the injury was minor and would not require any significant attention;  2. House rules said that my wanderings were to be confined to our neighborhood and I was NOT to cross the major thoroughfare to where the box company was located. Eventually I 'fessed-up.'  The nail of my big toe on the injured foot was severely bruised (nothing broken, thank goodness). It eventually fell off being replaced by a brand new one.

Preparation . . .

. . . for a new music release . . .
. . . can be arduous . . .

It can also be fun, exciting, demanding, thought-provoking, doubtful, congratulatory, tedious, labor-intensive, fearful, anxiety-producing, rewarding, reflective, disparaging, encouraging . . . and more . . .

. . . but I just gotta do it!

Words . . .

Us:  ". . . here's a short, fun one from the next OHO album (Male Pattern Radness). Begun in 1994 at Steve's, inspired by Joseph Campbell and the movie, The Witches of Eastwick...finalized at Bill's. . ."

Them:  ". . . I get a very close Frankincense olfactory reaction….:). . .

Us:  ". . . (we'll)  interpret this as being a favorable response. . ."

Them:  ". . . I do like it, but wonder if this mix doesn't try a little too hard. . . Yes! A favorable response! Frankincense has an aroma that calls attention to itself. It demands your attention and can not be ignored. Accordingly, this song is very much "in your face.

From Wikip: "Boswellia sacra trees are considered unusual for their ability to grow in environments so unforgiving that they sometimes grow out of solid rock. Frankincense is derived from these trees." That, my friend, is determination!. . ."

Us:  ". . . Thanks. . ."

Party . . .

OHO's Jay Graboski at Warren's Park Annual Block Party, Ocean City MD
Saturday, July 25, 2015 for sun, fun and music

On your mark get set
Disconnect that internet
Every girl and boy
Breathing in the joy
Not a care at last
Sit outside and bask
In rays of summer's bliss

Crabs and fish and shells
Feel your tensions melt
Fries and pizza pie
Smiles won't be denied
Everything is cool
in 2 1 8 4 2
Feel the sparkle in your eyes

Catch a wave and ride
Cars and motorbikes
Bikini babes in the sand
Vibin' to rockin' bands
Ocean City

From Memorial to Labor Day
We beckon you to play
To a boardwalk beat
Miles and miles of beach
Your memories to take
Currents dance and sway
leave your footprints in the sand

Fireworks at night
Give your love a kiss
Sail and fish the sea
Here life is a beach
in Ocean City

Now is the time that's right
For you only live once
Time does drag when it's all work and no fun
The ocean gateway calls you
Sport your shorts and shades
It's so divine to dine at life's buffet
It's almost heaven and
There's so much more we can say

Catch a wave and ride
Cool cars and motorbikes
Bikinis on the sand
Dance to rockin' bands
Ocean City

Marching . . .

. . . onward . . .

I had the pleasure to add a piano melody to this movement from Jay's 'Ahora' suite, which is creatively simmering to perfection under his watchful eye (and ears).  With some motivation ("What's my motivation Mr. DeMille?") and the free time to devote one's undivided attention without the pressure of other commitments, the process of feeling the music and using one's imagination to add a melody that positively supplements the beauty of the basic music is at the same time intriguing, challenging, gratifying . . . and fun!

There . . .

. . . most resent pitcher . . .

(from http://www.teachthought.com/industry/12-data-points-detailing-the-crisis-of-poor-writing-in-america/)
1. Four out of five students are not proficient writers.

2. Even with spell check and a thesaurus on hand, just 27% of students are able to write well-developed essays with proper language use.

3. Even worse, 26.2% of college graduates produce writing that rates as deficient.

4. Fewer than 50% of college seniors feel their writing improved during college.

5. SAT writing scores are falling, too.

6. About 17% of college freshmen require remedial writing classes.

7. The average fourth grader spends fewer than 3 hours per week writing.

8. Students struggle with reading.

9. Poor writing cost employers $3.1 billion per year.

10. Many students prefer texting over composition.

11. Male students are struggling worse than female students.

12. Writing isn’t considered fun by today’s students.

Thin . . .

. . . man

(from http://www.filmsite.org/thin.html)
The Thin Man (1934) is the first installment of a popular series of films casting a sophisticated, glamorous, pleasure-seeking, and urbane husband-wife detective team (William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles). Director W.S. Van Dyke had previously directed Manhattan Melodrama (1934), in which stars Powell and Loy had displayed their unique and charming chemistry in their first of 14 film pairings. The film's mystery story takes a back seat to the romantic screwball comedy, featuring the splendid, snappy and flirty banter between the rich, carefree married couple. They are known for sleuthing, solving murders, wisecracking one-liners, affectionate witticisms, delightful teasing and one-upmanship, alcoholic fun with plenty of martinis, a wire-haired terrier named Asta (actually named Skippy), and a loving relationship - often punctuated with quick kisses and slight hiccups. The story is taken from Dashiell Hammett's 1934 detective novel of the same name, with a married couple that was supposedly modeled on the author's relationship with longtime love and playwright Lillian Hellman. [This was Hammett's fifth and final novel, written following The Maltese Falcon and The Glass Key.] The 'thin man' is actually the murder victim in the novel and film, and only appeared in the initial film. This low-budget MGM film, that was shot in less than three weeks (14 days) and earned over $2 million, is the best of the bunch. It launched a series of five more lucrative Thin Man movies (from 1936 to 1947), some of which had their screenplays also written by Dashiell Hammett. Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich were responsible for co-writing the screenplays for the first three Thin Man films.

Posted. . .

"On Saturday July 26th, 2014: OHO to perform between 4:00 and 7:00 PM at the Warren's Park annual park party, 5101 Coastal Highway in Ocean City, MD ("everything is cool in 21842").

Parking is difficult but if you are in town, please stop by. This is a "pot luck" party so bring a dish or dessert, your beach/lawn chairs and a cooler stocked w/your fave beverages. It's free and, needless to say (but I am, however, just and STILL sayin' it), a lot of FUN."
