Equinox . . .

(from https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/equinox-not-equal.html)
". . . "Equinox" literally means "equal night", giving the impression that the night and day on the equinox are exactly the same length; 12 hours each. But this isn't entirely accurate. . . Even if the name suggests it and it is widely accepted, it is not entirely true that day and night are exactly equal on the equinox – only nearly. . . Earth spins around its own axis approximately every 24 hours (a sidereal day is 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4 seconds). . . The time it takes Earth to orbit once around the Sun is around 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds (365.242189 days). And, like two spinning tops connected at the tips, it also wobbles around on its axis, making a complete rotation every 26,000 years (axial precession). . . Earth is actually tilted at an angle of around 23.4 degrees toward the celestial pole, which is a certain point in the sky. As Earth makes its yearly orbit, 1 hemisphere faces the sun more than the other, the side that has summer. . ."

Desperation . . .

". . . light floods throughout the room. . . Something is happening in here! I feel a positive sense of curiosity. The light allows for potential. It allows for hope. . . the only thing I’m radiating is desperation. It feels as if it’s been winter forever, and the forecast is for more of the same. . ."

Unholy . . .

. . . trinity . . .

Up next: OHO at Johnny's Pub (5601 Coastal Hwy/Ocean City, MD/21842/410-723-5600)
When? 8:00 PM-12:00 AM, Friday February 20, 2015

Chicken calzone is wonderful and enough to feed at least 2, maybe even 3 people.
What to expect? 3 to 4 sets of contemporary rock & pop music ranging from Cole Porter to the Beatles/Stones/Kinks, and onto Fitz & The Tantrums/Weezer/Leonard Cohen and even a smattering of OHO original compositions: definitely an alternative to what one is usually exposed to in this Maryland province. Remember, there's magic at the beach even in the dead of winter..."burning gray, without its flare."

Eye . . .

. . . may have mentioned that I have self-diagnosed SAD (seasonal affective disorder - a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. Less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer.)  I seem to have gradually been less and less affected by it over the past several years. But today, I feel it has returned with a vengeance.

I have these water pipes in my basement that invariably, whenever the temperature gets down around 10 degrees F, freeze.  I have rigged the stopper in the toilet tank to allow a small leak of water which forces the pump to refill the tank and therefore move some water through the pipe, which is the only foolproof (so far) solution.  I leave the door open and the heat vent open in the winter.  I even attempt to flush the toilet frequently when such cold temperatures are in the forecast.

Now, after having the entire basement family room (including the half-bath where this pipe resides) renovated and insulation placed in the wall, tucked neatly to both sides of the pipe - it is actually flush against the wall making it an impossibility to wrap the insulation around the pipe, as should be done - and relaxing a bit while hoping that the newly installed insulation will do the trick, the pipe has frozen again. So here I sit, bathroom heater running furiously just past its third hour, waiting for the pipe to thaw, and hoping against all hope that the pipe did not split.

And the weather forecast only holds even more, sub-freezing temperatures.

Solstice . . .

(from http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/winter-solstice-2014-what-is-it--and-why-will-mornings-still-get-darker-9938160.html)
The Winter Solstice occurs in December in the Northern Hemisphere, and in June in the Southern Hemisphere. The date itself is not fixed:  the phenomenon doesn't always occur on 21 December in the Northern Hemisphere. Sometimes it arrives in the early hours of 22 December, which will happen next year. The hour also fluctuates: last year's Solstice arrived at 17:11, whereas next year's is predicted to be at 04:38.

A solar day is rarely 24 hours exactly.  The sun therefore lags behind the clock for part of the year, and speeds ahead of it for another. The length of a solar day varies because the axis of the Earth's rotation is tilted - 23.5 degrees from vertical - and because its speed fluctuates as it orbits the sun, accelerating when it is closer to the star's gravitational pull and decelerating when further away.
It takes a while for the clock and the solar days to align: evenings draw in towards their earliest sunset a couple of weeks before the shortest day, and mornings continue to get darker until a couple of weeks after.

Not Officially. . .

Although not officially diagnosed by a professional, I think that I suffer from Seasonal affective disorder (SAD).  SAD is also known as winter depression, winter blues, summer depression, summer blues, or seasonal depression, was considered a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year experience depressive symptoms in the winter or summer. I feel it in winter.  But I do think that I am getting better.

I always claim to have a vitamin D deficiency and need sunshine to stay happy and healthy.  I am noticing recently though that I can also appreciate a cloudy day every now and again.  A cloudy day seems to make me reflective on just about everything I can think of and sometimes a little more inspired. I do not like too many consecutive cloudy days though. . . vitamin D deficiency you know.

The Latest . . .

. . . from Doug Alan Wilcox; articulate, evocative and engaging singer songwriter
and good friend. . .

(from http://www.dawilcox.com/doug_alan_wilcox_true.html)
On the making of “True”

I had been through a particularly crappy Winter - bouts of depression and malaise had kept me fairly off-kilter for months. Fortunately, I was able to use that pain to write a couple of new songs and had yet a few more tunes that were in the live show rotation but hadn't been recorded so figured it was time to get into the studio. In hindsight, the activity of recording probably saved me many more weeks of ugly mood. Things do happen for a reason.

Along about this same time, my friend and fellow singer/songwriter Rick Windon asked if I would be willing to to take a lyric he had rattling around and try to put my spin on things. The result, "It Only Feels Like Love", while not at all a happy song, is still perhaps my favorite on "True" (btw, this IS a mostly POSITIVE album, really..........).

Now, I've never spoken to other artists to see if their experience is the same but the recording process always takes on a life of it's own for me. I invariably go in with a plan that disintegrates into dust within days. However SOMETHING GOOD always happens in place of that plan.

In this case, the two brand-new songs that I was sure were going to be on this record ended up being set aside for another day - they just didn't fit the flow that was taking shape for "True". I got the idea to write a couple of instrumental, sound-scape-type pieces - not quite songs but bits to tie other songs together.

Another great friend, pianist Ray Jozwiak, had offered his services earlier on and I threw two of the instrumentals his way. One gained lyrics in the meantime and became the title track and first cut on the CD. These "sounds-capes" really mark a departure for me and I think lend a whole different tone to the collection.

This is what I mean by a project "taking on a life of it's own". Things tend to happen very organically and it's always an intriguing and surprising adventure (for me at least)  to see what I end up with.

So in the end, it all came along well in the course of just over two months. My lovely wife helped with production duties (a woman with a very good ear!)
and didn't fuss when I was locked up in the studio or spending time glued to the computer with headphones - listening over and over to mixes.

As you can see other places on this site, all my current recorded work is posted at BandCamp.com. Everything there streams for free so please feel free to drop by - no commitment. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed making this, and all, my records - and if you like what you hear, you know what to do............. :)

Of "True", Betsy Burnam says: "......... It's beautiful; almost Zen-like lyrics and feeling but with humor and gentle passion. Doug opens his heart........."

Soapbox. . .

A new day, a new week.  Old worries, new worries.

That damned Fiscal Cliff fellow just won't go away.  Who to believe?  Boehner and his camp have not instilled me with great faith.  I prefer the perspective of the other side, but why don't the DO SOMETHING???  Maybe it's time for something drastic???

Christmas is coming.  The geese are getting fat.  (At least that's how the song goes.)  The sooner it arrives the sooner it will be gone.  The epitome of capitalism, is it not?

Korea wants to prove how far their missiles can go.  Worrisome?

Warm weather for a couple of days in the east.  A tease from Mother Nature.  Can't fool me though.
It's winter.

Music remains abundant soothing this savage breast and maketh all things good again. . . well. . . at least BETTER!
