Sure . . .

. . . can be . . .

It’s a melancholy world
When you can’t tell
The stones from the pearls.
You can’t image what
My motives are
Or what I’m feeling.

But the lights are bright
On Broadway
As the birds begin to sing.
As America pours her first
Cup of coffee,
It’s a melancholy world.

It’s a melancholy world
Choosing between the
Big brass ring or the girl.
I just can’t seem to
Hold on to the dreams
I’ve worked so hard for.

But the crowd is there
At midnight
And the party’s just begun.
There’s a gold invitation
That bears my name
But it’s gotten lost in the mail.
It’s a melancholy world.

The mirror holds the
Same old dour reflection
That it used to.

But the sun will rise
In the morning,
And the stars will light the night.
If they just took the time;
Listened to my sad song.

Sad . . .

. . . sad facts . . .

(from https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/fact-check-second-democratic-debate-2019-night-1-n1036471)
". . . "Tonight as we speak right now, 500,000 Americans are sleeping out on the street, and yet companies like Amazon that made billions in profits did not pay one nickel in federal income tax," he said.

He's right, according to an analysis of corporate filings put out by the progressive think tank Institute for Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP.)
. . . . . . . . .

"We pay more for prescription drugs than any place, actually, in the world. We’ve got nothing to show for it," Bullock said during a round of questions about health care.

Close. Americans pay more for drugs than people in any other developed country in the world, CNBC reported, citing recent studies.
. . . . . . . . .
"When I went to Canada the other day, people paid 1/10th the price of insulin that they’re paying in the U.S," Sen. Bernie Sanders claimed Tuesday night.

Americans do pay 10 times more than Canadians for insulin, according to the reports documenting Americans who drive across the border to purchase the lower-priced insulin. The cost of insulin for treating Type 1 diabetes nearly doubled between 2012 and 2016, according to the nonprofit Health Care Cost Institute.
. . . . . . . . .
Sanders flubbed one of his regular talking points — that three people have more wealth than the bottom half of the nation.

We've fact checked the original talking point before, and it’s true that three people — Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Warren Buffett — are estimated to have more wealth than the bottom 50 percent of the American population, according to a report by the left-leaning think tank Institute for Policy Studies.
. . . . . . . . . "

Different . . .

. . . but the same . . .

(from Thomas Jefferson; The Art of Power by Jon Meacham)
". . . Both Federalists and Republicans believed the fate of the United States could turn on the confrontation of the hour. In the broad public discourse, driven by partisan editors publishing partisan newspapers, there seemed no middle ground, only extremes of opinion or of outcome . . . "

Confused . . .

“I am both happy and sad at the same time, and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be.”
― Stephen Chbosky

“I am tired of people saying that poor character is the only reason people do wrong things. Actually, circumstances cause people to act a certain way. It's from those circumstances that a person's attitude is affected followed by weakening of character. Not the reverse. If we had no faults of our own, we should not take so much pleasure in noticing those in others and judging their lives as either black or white, good or bad. We all live our lives in shades of gray.”
― Shannon L. Alder

“When you don't know where to start,
just go to a place you miss so much.”
― Toba Beta

“I just want to be someone, to mean something to anyone…”
― Charlotte Eriksson

“After a long silence, Dodge cleared his throat. "I think I speak for all of us when I say, 'Huh?hat”
― Frank Beddor

“sometime hate is just confused love!”
― Omar Tyree

“I freely admit I'm confused. I'm a confused and troubled individual but at the same time...Its Free! ”
― Craig Ferguson

“I do not understand this analogy," Mencheres muttered.”
― Jeaniene Frost

“I've never been lost, but I was mighty turned around for three days once.”
― Daniel Boone

“It’s really very difficult to understand a woman – actually it’s not she but he who is confused”

Fall . . .

. . . also known as AUTUMN . .

“It looked like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon.”
― Sarah Addison Allen, First Frost

“I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
― L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”
― Albert Camus

“You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.”
― Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

“I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”
― Henry David Thoreau

“Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.”
― Lauren DeStefano, Wither

Lines . . .

. . . Written in Early Spring
BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.

To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.

Through primrose tufts, in that green bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And ’tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.

The birds around me hopped and played,
Their thoughts I cannot measure:—
But the least motion which they made
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.

The budding twigs spread out their fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That there was pleasure there.

If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature’s holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?

Eye . . .

. . . may have mentioned that I have self-diagnosed SAD (seasonal affective disorder - a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. Less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer.)  I seem to have gradually been less and less affected by it over the past several years. But today, I feel it has returned with a vengeance.

I have these water pipes in my basement that invariably, whenever the temperature gets down around 10 degrees F, freeze.  I have rigged the stopper in the toilet tank to allow a small leak of water which forces the pump to refill the tank and therefore move some water through the pipe, which is the only foolproof (so far) solution.  I leave the door open and the heat vent open in the winter.  I even attempt to flush the toilet frequently when such cold temperatures are in the forecast.

Now, after having the entire basement family room (including the half-bath where this pipe resides) renovated and insulation placed in the wall, tucked neatly to both sides of the pipe - it is actually flush against the wall making it an impossibility to wrap the insulation around the pipe, as should be done - and relaxing a bit while hoping that the newly installed insulation will do the trick, the pipe has frozen again. So here I sit, bathroom heater running furiously just past its third hour, waiting for the pipe to thaw, and hoping against all hope that the pipe did not split.

And the weather forecast only holds even more, sub-freezing temperatures.

Reading . . .

. . . the faces . . .

Maybe it's me.  The stories of Chuck Hagel's resignation and speculation about the reasons has been varied, believable and interesting.  They've even been uncharacteristically (for the press) objective.
All sound plausible from McCain's explanation that the administration micromanages and that Hagel, like his predecessors felt they were inhibited to the administration rep's comments on Hagel not being up to the job.

The photo above right is the more interesting of the two but the one left is there purely for contrast. Whatever the mutual feeling on the left, (when Panetta left and Hagel joined) all appear relaxed and, for lack of a more descriptive term:  happy.  The one right clearly portrays something practically opposite happy.  And while the resignation of a cabinet officer is certainly not a happy occasion.  But I detect in the one on the right, something more;  deeper.  Maybe the version that Hagel was forced out?

Sad . . .

On Bob McDonnell, 'Strife has formed a core of their joint defense.' Bob McDonnell and his wife of 38 years insisted throughout the trial that their marriage was crumbling and in such a state that they barely spoke enough to  be able to conspire to sell the influence of the governor's office to a dietary supplement executive in exchange for $177,000 in loads and luxury gifts. The trial was long and contentious.

The details of the story are convoluted. In my brief and superficial summary I see a marriage which slowly failed in sacrifice to promote a political career.  Mrs. McDonnell dutifully raised the children while the ambitious Mr. McDonnell rose in political rank. The diet-supplement king enters the picture and captivates Mrs. McDonnell. She accepts his friendship and all the material and monetary accessories that accompany it.  Mr. McDonnell sees it but believes no harm nor violations of law are occurring, so he lets it continue. Justice prevails in the end.  But $177,000 and a political career?  Doesn't seem worth the gamble in the first place.

Yes, it's easy for me to sit here and analyze at a distance from it all, but sad is my overwhelming reaction to it all.
