Roads . . .

. . . Diverge . . .

People talk about all kinds of things
Like the weather
Like their politics
Like the things that they watch on TV
But still the roads diverge

Funny though all this chatter don't mean a thing
When compared with the wondering
When they speak of just how
The roads diverge

There comes a moment
You’re suddenly face with a choice
All that you thought that you
Knew becomes smoke
And all of your detailed and
Best laid-out plans
Have become just one
Great big joke

Some will cope
Some will agonize endlessly
Pleading take this away from me
This decision I face
When roads diverge

A Necessary Shame . . .

. . . that someone had to actually say (or write) that. . .

(from https://www.baltimoresun.com/opinion/columnists/dan-rodricks/bs-md-rodricks-column-0909-20190910-xmmpucausrehhc3vfaoasjko7i-story.html?fbclid=IwAR1OdeIqoLmut4X6ZNjQ8iShiJNPVxkzStwXZd3TjWQus5oiPpdySd6S4BQ)
[The weather] ". . . is what it is, not what the president says it is. . . "

. . . not to mention that the president forced NOAA to falsely defend his gaffe (again,  dictatorship tendencies) . . .

Weather . . .

. . . or not? . . .

(from http://www.snopes.com/politics/science/coleman.asp)
". . . John Coleman is a former television weather forecaster who worked in that field for over six decades, at a number of different TV stations across the U.S., until he suddenly retired from his last job at KUSI-TV in San Diego in April 2014. Coleman pioneered the use of such now-standard TV weather forecasting elements as onscreen satellite technology and computer graphics, and he was also instrumental in the founding of The Weather Channel (TWC) on cable television, serving as that channel’s CEO and President during its establishment and its first year of operation. . . John Coleman also became, in later years, an outspoken critic of the global warming issue. . . "all of it, comes down to their claim that the carbon dioxide in the exhaust from your car and in the smoke stacks from our power plants is destroying the climate of planet Earth. What an amazing fraud; what a scam. . . There is no significant man made global warming. There has not been any in the past, there is none now and there is no reason to fear any in the future. The climate of Earth is changing. It has always changed. But mankind’s activities have not overwhelmed or significantly modified the natural forces. . . ". . .
Although this item is superficially “true” in the sense that the words quoted above were indeed written by John Coleman, the statement that they “refute” global warming (i.e., prove it to be false) is something of an exaggeration. As Coleman’s critics have noted, he does not hold a degree in climatology or any related discipline, nor has he studied or conducted any research in that field; he merely parrots arguments advanced by others:  Both Fox News and CNN have recently invited John Coleman, one of the founders of The Weather Channel and former TV meteorologist, to express his views about climate change to their national audiences. Coleman is simply an awful choice to discuss this issue. He lacks credentials, many of his statements about climate change completely lack substance or mislead . . . Coleman hasn’t published a single peer-reviewed paper pertaining to climate change science. His career, a successful and distinguished one, was in TV weather for over half a century, prior to his retirement in San Diego last April. If you watch Coleman on-camera, his skill is obvious. He speaks with authority, injects an irreverent sense of humor and knows how to connect with his viewer. . . But a climate scientist, he is not. . . For the many Americans who don’t understand the difference between weather — the short-term behavior of the atmosphere — and climate — the broader system in which weather happens — Coleman’s professional background made him a genuine authority on global warming. It was an impression that Coleman encouraged. Global warming “is not something you ‘believe in,'” he wrote in his essay. “It is science; the science of meteorology. This is my field of life-long expertise.” . . . Except that it wasn’t. Coleman had spent half a century in the trenches of TV weathercasting; he had once been an accredited meteorologist, and remained a virtuoso forecaster. . . "

So . . .

. . . many things. . .

. . . so little time . . .

. . . we must pick up wine for ________, it's on the way to the house. . . that's very close to _________vineyards, where we must pick up our September club selection . . .  and _________vineyards is to the north just before we turn west to head for the house . . .  but now we are wined out and should probably save the last one for another day . . . but there is more rain forecast than originally but we don't care because there are SOOOOO many wineries to visit that the weather is not really a concern but then we must be careful to restrain ourselves from excessive purchases since many now do ship to our location and if we bought everything we liked we would simply not have enough room to return home with all the personal items that we took with us in the first place . .

Sing It . . .

Cowboy . . .

Is there something new
That's happening between us
Or has
Something gone away that used to be

It's a mystery
Comes out of the blue
Just some evening
Words exchanged between we two
Starts out simply
Ends up blistering

Is there something new
That's happening between us
Or has
Something gone away that used to be

Maybe harmless stuff
About the weather
Or some such
Dinner's fabulous
The company
Was so intoxicating

Is there something new
That's happening between us
Or has
Something gone away that used to be

I'd like to talk
About what's happening
But when I do
I find that
I'm the one to blame

We've got to try
To see this through
We've been
Through so many things
And worse things too
The answer's
There to see

Is there something new
That's happening between us
Or has
Something gone away that used to be

Weather . . .

. . . is the almighty equalizer.

No one can escape it.  It is non-discriminatory.  It is the basis for 78.5% of all conversation among acquaintances, co-workers and strangers (BTW 75% of all statistics are made up on the spot) and it proliferates via all media; printed, electronic or otherwise.  'Weatherman' is actually a profession (or is it Weatherperson?) which is high profile and quite respectable in spite of the lack of any performance standards with the exception of 'good hair' and snappy clothes. Some folks have even taken it upon themselves to be all-consumed with the weather and utilize it not only as conversation but as an integral task incorporated into their daily routine. Activities are planned and cancelled, tempers are affected and reputations are built or destroyed . . .

. . . well, maybe not . . .

Average. . .

. . . Schmaverage . . .

(from http://science.time.com/2014/01/22/average-temperatures-in-january-warm-despite-cold/)
"January 2014 will go down as the month we all learned about the polar vortex (even if meteorologists have known about it for decades). It’s the month when it got so cold that Minnesota closed all schools for the first time since 1997, when much of the Midwest was more frigid than the North Pole, when even Tampa experienced temperatures below freezing. (As of this writing) much of the eastern half of the country is suffering through another bitter cold snap—not caused by the vortex, FYI—one that has blanked the East Coast in heavy snow. Winter, in short, has felt miserable.

But here’s the surprise: on a historical and national level, it hasn’t actually been all that cold. With data from Weather Underground, I calculated the average high daily temperature from Jan. 1 through Jan. 22 for the 10 largest cities in the U.S. The results make this winter look surprisingly average:

Jan. 2014 Average High                Historical Average High
    New York:         38 F (3.3 C)          36 F (2.2 C)
    Los Angeles:     76 F (24.4 C)        68 F (20 C)
    Chicago:            27 F (-2.7 C)          32 F (0 C)
    Houston:          64 F (17.8 C)          63 F (17.2 C)
    Philadelphia:   40 F (4.4 C)           41 F (5 C)
    Phoenix:           73 F (22. 8 C)         67 F (19.4 C)
    San Antonio:   66 F (18.9 C)           63 F (17.2 C)
    San Diego:        72 F (22.2 C)          65 F (18.3 C)
    Dallas:               58 F (14.4 C)           57 F (13.9 C)
    San Jose:          66 F (18.9 C)           58 F (14.4 C)

What do we learn from this? Well for one thing, there’s an East Coast bias in news coverage, at least of the weather. But while it truly has been historically cold on average for much of the Midwest, for most of the rest of the country the average temperatures have been around normal, or even a little above. And the West Coast is experiencing an unusually hot winter (one that has compounded the record drought in California). Average high temperatures have been further above normal in Los Angeles and San Jose than they’ve been below average in Chicago. Anchorage has been positively balmy—by Alaskan standards—with average daily highs that are 11 F (6.1 C) greater than the historical average for January. . ."

Currently. . .

. . . that is about 6:15AM EST, on Wednesday. . .

The National Weather Service website said, "The storm system impacting the Midwest will shift into the northeast U.S. on Wednesday, bringing a plethora of weather hazards. Heavy snow, especially in the central Appalachians and northern Mid-Atlantic, strong winds, coastal flooding and rough seas are a few of the weather hazards which may lead to dangerous travel conditions, localized power outages and property damage."

Funny how one's perception of WEATHER (among many other things) changes with age:

At 6 years of age -  the more severe the forecast, the better.  Bring it on.  No school. YEAH!!

At 16 years of age - severe forecast, could get a day off,  will miss band practice,  have to make up missed schoolwork.

At 26 years of age - driving to work is going to be a bear.

At 36 years of age - schools are closed.  Who's going watch the kids.

At 46 years of age - driving to work is going to be a bear.  Hope the kids drive safely.

At 56 years of age - snow, wind, floods, power outages and property damage - let's move SOUTH.

BTW, at 10:49PM EST, all we got was rain.  Haha.  Oh well.
