Wiser . . .

Wisdom, many wrongly feel,
Comes naturally with age.
The time frame's right
But, unaided, don't
Expect it at this stage.

It won't arrive automatically.
One has to work; one has to try
To develop, most emphatically.
No effort brings you no result.
No lethargy can you justify.

Growth . . .

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”
― Henry Ford

“The more I live, the more I learn. The more I learn, the more I realize, the less I know.”
― Michel Legrand

“Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.”
― Albert Einstein

“You'll never know everything about anything, especially something you love.”
― Julia Child

“I read my eyes out and can't read half enough...the more one reads the more one sees we have to read.”
― John Adams, Letters of John Adams, Addressed to His Wife

“There is nothing more notable in Socrates than that he found time, when he was an old man, to learn music and dancing, and thought it time well spent.”
― Michel de Montaigne, The Complete Essays

“There are few things more pathetic than those who have lost their curiosity and sense of adventure, and who no longer care to learn.”
― Gordon B. Hinckley, Way to Be!: 9 Rules For Living the Good Life

“Curiosity is one of the permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.”
― Samuel Johnson, The Rambler

“The education of a man is never completed until he dies.”
― Robert E. Lee

“I was bold in the pursuit of knowledge, never fearing to follow truth and reason to whatever results they led.”
― Thomas Jefferson

. . . They're all true.  At least they are for me. I remember as a kid, at times saying "I'm bored." Now I know for a fact that, even if I lived to be 1,000 years old, I can never be bored.  There is always something 'educational' (meaning possessing the ability to expose you to something that you do not know- or maybe as you get older - something you have forgotten) to experience whether it be a place to visit, something to see, something to hear or something to read.  Yes read.  This is a word that upsets a substantial amount of people these days.  Also, in my case and hopefully in yours, there is always something to create!

All ? . . .

. . . or just the ones YOU know?

It always amazes me when someone uses the word "all" in reference to a group of people, such as gender, religious, professional, age, race, national origin or anything else. The reason this began to trouble me many years ago was a conversation, of which I was a party, where someone made reference to men, a group to which I belong, and "how they are."  In fact, the attribute, characteristic, nature or other aspect of men to which this person referred was clearly not one that I shared and I was, quite honestly, anxious to inform the person of this. All of which, after some additional consideration, led me to the realization that although it comes quickly and frequently to the mind (and to the lips), the word "ALL" should be employed only with the utmost discretion, unless of course you are referring to a smaller, more manageable group than 'men', such as 'the three stooges', 'two of my friends' or maybe even 'a dozen eggs.'  Another recent conversation involved me where another man was considering that portion of the population to which I will refer to here as women, in a somewhat dismissive and disparaging way. More specifically, and also unfortunately, he cited as his evidence female members of his own immediate family. My efforts to diplomatically bring to his attention that female members of my family were in fact not so easily categorized, a fact that in utilizing logic, negated his entire premise. At this point, it appeared that he had finally gotten my proverbial 'drift.'  But then before parting he smirked and said, 'But you know they're ALL cut from the same cloth.'

More Steps . . .

Have you not heard his silent steps?
He comes, comes, ever comes.

Every moment and every age,
every day and every night he comes, comes, ever comes.

Many a song have I sung in many a mood of mind,
but all their notes have always proclaimed,
`He comes, comes, ever comes.'

In the fragrant days of sunny April through the forest path he comes,
comes, ever comes.

In the rainy gloom of July nights on the thundering chariot of clouds
he comes, comes, ever comes.

In sorrow after sorrow it is his steps that press upon my heart,
and it is the golden touch of his feet that makes my joy to shine.
-Rabindranath Tagore

Cognitive . . .

. . . dysfunction . . .

I am not old by today's standards, being in my late 50s.  People my age do, though, tend to begin thinking about things that do not generally preoccupy 20-somethings.  I mean things like mortality, legacy, beneficence and health- both physical and mental.

Pam and her friend recently had a discussion about one of those topics.  The friend was explaining that she has set a retirement date and needs to do that sooner rather than later because she feels that she just doesn't have the 'brainpower' to continue to function in her professional capacity in an optimum manner.  Pam, sympathizing of course, offer the suggestion of consulting some reading material which she had recently encountered.  She said that her friend should google 'cognitive dysfunction'. Her friend, betraying some interest in the topic asked, "what is cognitive dysfunction' to which Pam responded, "Actually, I don't remember. . . "

In Between. . .

Sometimes (especially at my age) life seems like a series of coping with bad things.  These things involve either a physical (although sometimes psychological) issue of my own or of others close to me, or sometimes death itself.  Not trying to be Debbie-Downer or anything here.  It's just how I feel sometimes.

But in the meantime, I have to live my life to the fullest in between those times.  I must take advantage of all the good things and people in my life.  Living this way should and will strengthen me to cope better when the bad things do roll around.

And I really don't want to be a pessimist because, as a good friend of mine often says, the glass is half empty AND half full at the same time.

Success. . .

. . . is success at any age. . .

Ronald Reagan became the governor of California at 61, and later also became US President.

Sam Snead won the Par 3 Tournament in 1974 when he was 61.

Gandhi was 61 when he and his followers marched 240 miles in 24 days to make their own salt from the sea in defiance of British colonial laws and taxes.

Benjamin Franklin at age 70 played an instrumental role in drafting and signing the Declaration of Independence and at age 81 signed the Constitution of the United States of America.

Frank McCourt, the author who wrote the bestseller "Angela's Ashes" first began to write in his sixties.

Winston Churchill, with his fondness for cigars and Scotch, was active and productive until his death at age ninety.

Selective. . .

. . .  memory. . .
On the ride home from Pam's birthday dinner, we detoured past the apartment complex where we lived when we were first married.  Beautiful complex.  Well maintained and still very attractive.  Neighborhood has evolved. Many drastic changes have taken place while some, small sections still contain the quaint, old houses we so admired and fantasized about possibly buying (if we could have afforded it) way back then.  The pleasant drive triggered a litany of old memories from my very limited brain, some of which remain as clear as though they were yesterday. But others come with doubts about many of the details that I am able to recall.  Selective memory??  Probably. Nevertheless, I was able to continue the saga until we reached home.

(from wikipedia.com)
". . . Normal aging is associated with a decline in various memory abilities in many cognitive tasks; the phenomenon is known as age-related memory impairment (AMI) or age-associated memory impairment (AAMI). The ability to encode new memories of events or facts and working memory shows decline in both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Studies comparing the effects of aging on episodic memory, semantic memory, short-term memory and priming find that episodic memory is especially impaired in normal aging; some types of short-term memory are also impaired. The deficits may be related to impairments seen in the ability to refresh recently processed information. Source information is one type of episodic memory that suffers with old age; this kind of knowledge includes where and when the person learned the information. Knowing the source and context of information can be extremely important in daily decision-making, so this is one way in which memory decline can affect the lives of the elderly. Therefore, reliance on political stereotypes is one way to use their knowledge about the sources when making judgments, and the use of metacognitive knowledge gains importance.[8] This deficit may be related to declines in the ability to bind information together in memory during encoding and retrieve those associations at a later time.

Episodic memory is supported by networks spanning frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes. The interconnections in the lobes are presumed to enable distinct aspects of memory, whereas the effects of gray matter lesions have been extensively studied, less is known about the interconnecting fiber tracts. In aging, degradation of white matter structure has emerged as an important general factor, further focusing attention on the critical white matter connections. . . "
