Studies . . .

. . . which are sometimes better kept within the scientific community until they actually PROVE something . . .

(from http://wtkr.com/2016/07/03/butter-not-as-bad-as-you-thought-study-suggests/)
". . . The researchers collected data on butter consumption and health risks from nine previous studies that, in total, included 636,151 participants. The data were combined into a large meta-analysis, as the researchers examined exactly how butter consumption was associated with mortality, heart disease and diabetes. . .They noticed that each daily serving of butter in the data was associated with a 1% higher risk of death and a 4% lower risk of type 2 diabetes. (Previous research has shown a peculiar link between dairy fat and a decreased risk of diabetes.) . . . “We were slightly surprised by the diabetes result: Butter intake appeared to have a very moderate protective effect,” Pimpin said. “However, it is important to remember that this is based on very few studies, so it may not be a reliable result, and it shows that more studies are needed on the topic.”. . ."

Mortality . . .

Watching movies about old people gets one to thinking . . .

(from http://flavorwire.com/324742/20-famous-writers-on-death-and-mortality)
“Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more.” – Christopher Hitchens, The Portable Atheist

“People living deeply have no fear of death.” – Anaïs Nin, The Diary Of Anaïs Nin, Volume Two

“Life was not a valuable gift, but death was. Life was a fever-dream made up of joys embittered by sorrows, pleasure poisoned by pain; a dream that was a nightmare-confusion of spasmodic and fleeting delights, ecstasies, exultations, happinesses, interspersed with long-drawn miseries, griefs, perils, horrors, disappointments, defeats, humiliations, and despairs — the heaviest curse devisable by divine ingenuity; but death was sweet, death was gentle, death was kind; death healed the bruised spirit and the broken heart, and gave them rest and forgetfulness; death was man’s best friend; when man could endure life no longer, death came and set him free.” – Mark Twain, Letters from the Earth

“I can remember how when I was young I believed death to be a phenomenon of the body; now I know it to be merely a function of the mind — and that of the minds who suffer the bereavement. The nihilists say it is the end; the fundamentalists, the beginning; when in reality it is no more than a single tenant or family moving out of a tenement or a town.” – William Faulkner, As I Lay Dying

“Death is no more than passing from one room into another. But there’s a difference for me, you know. Because in that other room I shall be able to see.” – Helen Keller

Cognitive . . .

. . . dysfunction . . .

I am not old by today's standards, being in my late 50s.  People my age do, though, tend to begin thinking about things that do not generally preoccupy 20-somethings.  I mean things like mortality, legacy, beneficence and health- both physical and mental.

Pam and her friend recently had a discussion about one of those topics.  The friend was explaining that she has set a retirement date and needs to do that sooner rather than later because she feels that she just doesn't have the 'brainpower' to continue to function in her professional capacity in an optimum manner.  Pam, sympathizing of course, offer the suggestion of consulting some reading material which she had recently encountered.  She said that her friend should google 'cognitive dysfunction'. Her friend, betraying some interest in the topic asked, "what is cognitive dysfunction' to which Pam responded, "Actually, I don't remember. . . "

Drama . . .

. . . is not my forte . . .
. . . but in addition to sorrow, grief and concern, I have experienced much of it recently.

Not only has mortality made its point clear to me once again, but the notion of imperfection has been reinforced.

I knew that I had become a 'grownup' the day I realized that my heroes had faults.  They were real people who offered me something that I required but did not possess myself.  And although each one was, in my eyes, a master in his individual field, he was merely a human being complete with imperfections, just like me.  Since it is beyond my capability to change that fact and since I most certainly do not possess the ability to make him (nor myself, for that matter) perfect,  I, myself choose to continue to appreciate him for his redeeming abilities or disassociate myself from him for his flaws.  It is my choice.  I must make it and I must live with it.

Isn't this what we all do?

Sha-laa-la-la-la. . .

. . . let's live for today. . .
. . . the mortality reported in the entertainment, literature and business (motivation) worlds yesterday gives one pause, I would like to think.  At my age, mortality does enter the consciousness more often than in younger days.  But it doesn't have to be depressing.  It's just one of those things that has to happen no matter our aversion or distaste for it, like . . . Brussels sprouts or . . . American Idol.  (I didn't mean that.  I really do like Brussels sprouts.)

So goodbye Kitty, Donald, Stephen, Bob and Jon.  You will be missed. And for those who won't be missed by quite as many, you will be missed by some every bit as deeply.

So as difficult as it may be, try to think about mortality every now and then;  yours as well as everyone else's.  Think about how natural and unavoidable it is.  Then remember . . . today, right now. . . . you are alive!
