Wiser . . .

Wisdom, many wrongly feel,
Comes naturally with age.
The time frame's right
But, unaided, don't
Expect it at this stage.

It won't arrive automatically.
One has to work; one has to try
To develop, most emphatically.
No effort brings you no result.
No lethargy can you justify.

Distorted . . .

https://jasonsimonphotography.weebly.com/distortion.html
In the world
Which was much larger then
At least so it seemed
To me and my friends
We loved many things
Understood a small few
But we always relied
On the big people

Then time
Toil and trouble
Took their toll on our dreams
And little by little
We grew
As we learned more and more
Our perspectives had changed
And we wondered

The big people were good
They surrounded us daily
We believed that all big ones
Were worldly and wise
As our own wisdom flourished
We would slowly conclude
That good things don't come
Always with size

Forgot. . .

Forgotten, but not gone
Somethings are simply hard to do
But as a wise man once has stated
What's in a name anyway?

Forgot your name
Remember your face
Forgot your name
But I've got your number

Wind . . .

"He that troubles his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart"
-Proverbs 11:29 (King James Version)

". . . Walter Shaub, federal ethics chief under Barack Obama and briefly Trump and now a fierce critic of the administration, responded: “Sanders used her official govt account to condemn a private business for personal reasons … she can lob attacks on her own time but not using her official position.”. . . The story set off a fierce Twitter battle between Trump supporters and opponents, many on both sides comparing it to a recent supreme court ruling that said the owner of a Colorado cake shop was right to refuse service to a gay couple, based on his religious beliefs. . ."

Wisely . . .

. . . managed . . .
. . . time. . .

. . . when Cinderella danced with the prince, a compunction she found unavoidable after making eye contact across the crowded room. . .

". . . The actual Cinderella tale, while a nebulous thing that can be hard to pin down with precision, is more than that. There's very little that's common to every variant of the story, but in general, you have a mistreated young woman, forced to do menial work, either cast out or unloved by her family. She has an opportunity to marry well and escape her situation, but she gets that chance only after being mistaken for a higher-status person, so she has to get the man who may marry her to recognize her in her low-status form, which often happens either via a shoe that fits or some kind of food that she prepares. . . It's partly a fantasy about simplifying the relationships between social standing and coupling — one that makes the most sense in a world in which class differences are an accepted barrier to a good man choosing to marry a woman. If the prince is a man who believes from the outset that love conquers all, the story doesn't really make any sense. It would be hard to set Cinderella on a properly functioning egalitarian collective. . ."

Trying . . .

. . . to attain a certain level of 'Wisdom'

"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something."
-Plato

"A wise woman puts a grain of sugar into everything she says to a man, and takes a grain of salt with everything he says to her."
-Helen Rowland

"Wise men are not always silent, but they know when to be."
-Unknown

"Deep doubts, deep wisdom; small doubts, little wisdom."
-Chinese proverb

"A wise man is he who does not grieve for the thing which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has."
-Epictetus

"The wise person has long ears and a short tongue."
-German proverb

Notably . . .

. . . wise

(from http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2014/08/19/7-lessons-from-socrates-on-wisdom-wealth-and-the-g.aspx. . . totally out of the original context but genuinely appreciated)
"Those who are already wise no longer love wisdom – whether they are gods or men. Similarly, those whose own ignorance has made them bad, rotten, evil, do not strive for wisdom either. For no evil or ignorant person ever strives for wisdom. What remains are those who suffer from ignorance, but still retain some sense and understanding. They are conscious of knowing what they don't know."

"Well I am certainly wiser than this man. It is only too likely that neither of us has any knowledge to boast of; but he thinks that he knows something which he does not know, whereas I am quite conscious of my ignorance. At any rate it seems that I am wiser than he is to this small extent, that I do not think that I know what I do not know."

"Oh my friend, why do you, who are a citizen of the great and mighty and wise city of Athens, care so much about laying up the greatest amount of money and honor and reputation, and so little about wisdom and truth and the greatest improvement of the soul, which you never regard or heed at all? Are you not ashamed of this?"

"For I go about doing nothing else than urging you, young and old, not to care for your persons or your property more than for the perfection of your souls, or even so much; and I tell you that virtue does not come from money, but from virtue comes money and all other good things to man, both the individual and to the state."

"Fellow citizens, why do you turn and scrape every stone to gather wealth, and, yet, take so little care of your own children, to whom one day you must relinquish all."

"In truth, the fear of death is nothing but thinking you're wise when you are not, for you think you know what you don't. For no one knows whether death happens to be the greatest of all goods for humanity, but people fear it because they're completely convinced it is the greatest of evils. And isn't this ignorance, after all, the most shameful kind: thinking you know what you don't."

"At the time, I made it clear once again, not by talk but by action, that I didn't care at all about death – if I'm not being too blunt to say it – but it mattered everything that I do nothing unjust or impious, which matters very much to me. For though it had plenty of power, that government didn't frighten me into doing anything that's wrong."

Bucket . . .

. . .  list . . .

. . . I have many times felt an aversion to certain popular buzzwords, jargon, lingo. . . whatever you want to call it.  As an adolescent I always thought the words 'girlfriend' and 'boyfriend' carried a demeaning or minimalizing connotation;  as in "you and your little girlfriend."  One of my latest semantic pet peeves is the term 'bucket list.'  I understand its meaning. I appreciate the humor in it. I just don't really like.  And I do not have one.  Other words suffice very well, thank you. . . words like 'goal', 'objective', 'desire', 'need' or 'WANT' . . .

. . . and right now I really, really WANT. . .

. . . the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Moderation . . .

mod·er·a·tion
ˌmädəˈrāSHən/
noun
noun: moderation
1.
the avoidance of excess or extremes, esp. in one's behavior or political opinions.
"he urged the police to show moderation"

Aristotle said, "Moderation in all things" and even wrote a book detailing multiple situations to which is can be applied. On the surface, moderation seems to be a wise and prudent approach to take with many things from diet to politics.  Still, Americans seem to find it a very difficult thing to practice.

Yet . . .

"A wise man is superior to any insults which can be put upon him, and the best reply to unseemly behavior is patience and moderation."
-Moliere

"Water, taken in moderation, cannot hurt anybody."
-Mark Twain

"Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess."
-Oscar Wilde

"Complete abstinence is easier than perfect moderation."
-Saint Augustine

Too Much . . .

. . . wisdom?

. . . can't happen. . .

“The difference between a moral man and a man of honor is that the latter regrets a discreditable act, even when it has worked and he has not been caught.”
-H. L. Mencken

“When men exercise their reason coolly and freely on a variety of distinct questions, they inevitably fall into different opinions on some of them.  When they are governed by a common passion, their opinions, if they are so to be called, will be the same.”
-Alexander Hamilton

Quote. . .

. . . from Bertrand Russell confronted me today. . .

“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser men so full of doubts.”

. . . which really struck me.  In the past twenty-some years that I have been writing and attempting to market (in some form or fashion) original material, it occurred to me that this is exactly what stopped me from starting this process much, much earlier.  So after reading this Russell gem, I believe that it was actually not insecurity that prevented me from jumping head first into a musical pursuit, it was actually wisdom.

But to take this another step, I always felt that wisdom comes with age, simply because the longer one lives, the more experience he attains by virtue of mere longevity.  But if what Russell says is true, my late-found self-confident could be nothing more than foolishness.

. . . or could there be a happy middle-ground in there somewhere?

Let's wise up. . .

CNN, NBC, FOX, CBS, ABC and any organization calling itself a "News" provider, that's worth its salt, should have already implemented a permanent fact-checking mechanism in any and all coverage of presidential elections, a long, long time ago.

Cheers to Vicky!
