Not Clear . . .

(from https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/paloma/the-finance-202/2018/01/18/the-finance-202-trump-is-eager-to-claim-credit-for-apple-moves-but-it-s-a-bit-more-complicated/5a5fa11d30fb0469e88401c2/?utm_term=.ff1cc6d308cb)
". . .The Wall Street Journal’s Tripp Mickle does a careful job parsing the company’s statement: . . . The company previously said it planned $16 billion in capital expenditures world-wide in the fiscal year that ends this September, up from $14.9 billion the previous year. However, Apple doesn’t break out its spending in the U.S., making it difficult to gauge how much of the $30 billion over five years it announced Wednesday is new. . . Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., said Apple’s plans are in line with Trump administration goals, but that it isn’t clear how much of the commitments are new. And he said the company could deliver on those commitments with existing cash flow — without needing to tap cash holdings. . .“It’s a nice number and puts a foot forward in line with where the administration wants to go with adding jobs and building in the U.S.,” he said. But he added, “It’s not clear these investments were impacted in any way by tax reform.”. . . "

I Am . . .

. . . a Company Man . . .

. . . maybe not . . .

I'm feeling dead on my feet
I've got the stubble on my chin
Spent half the night on the job
I'm gonna bring that new account in
There ain't no supper on the table
The lady knows just where I've been
I do the best that I am able
With the limited resources I have
In matters of the heart
And if it's coming down to minding my own business
It's just the business I've been minding
That I've been minding all the time
You gotta make up your mind

I only wanted to
Grow up shooting outlaws
While riding on the back of a horse
But that just wasn't a part of the plan
My mother told me to always be a good boy
But I'm a company man
I do the best that I can
My wife and children will
Have to wait in line for my time
Cause I'm a company man

This looking bad isn't good
The only answer is ignore it
A little pain here and there
You get some medicine and cure it
It's not that I can't take the pressure
The pot is boiling all the time
It's only that I'm being
Measured by the powers in the boardroom above
They're always watching me
And if I miss an opportunity to make another
To make a dollar they will find it
And it will certainly be missed
Another cheek to be kissed

I only wanted to
Grow up shooting outlaws
While riding on the back of a horse
But that just wasn't a part of the plan
My mother told me to always be a good boy
But I'm a company man
I do the best that I can
My wife and children will
Have to wait in line for my time
Cause I'm a company man

I was so young and idealistic then
Couldn't see the trees for the forest
Most of the time
Until I tasted all the choicest wines
Saving money up for that rainy day
Finding phony rendezvous getaways
Am I really fooling somebody
Or is it the pay

I was a child of the light
I always learned to do the right things
And though they said I was bright
There's still a fire inside me burning
For all the riches that I'm missing
For all the love I never found
I wonder who she might be
Kissing in the middle of a cold winter night
When left alone again
I wonder just what I would do if she would leave me
Pack up the kids and run away
Without a singular goodbye
Why in the world would she try

I only wanted to
Grow up shooting outlaws
While riding on the back of a horse
But that just wasn't a part of the plan
My mother told me to always be a good boy
But I'm a company man
I do the best that I can
My wife and children will
Have to wait in line for my time
Cause I'm a company man

Must Be . . .

. . . shove

(from http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/07/29/5-secrets-you-should-know-about-hr)
". . . HR's job is to support the company's managers, not to dictate how they operate. Some companies give HR more power than they should – such as letting them control how other departments hire or make promotion decisions. But in general, if you're a manager and your HR department is creating obstacles to your work (for instance, making it harder for you to hire great people or hire as quickly as you need to, or making it difficult for you to address performance problems forthrightly), you should push back. Escalate the situation, or find an ally higher up in the organization who can overrule HR or push for different procedures. . . "

Everybody . . .

. . . wants one . . .

Many firms spend their 'quality' time with employees preaching on how the employees can do things differently, usually to the benefit of the company.  How many actually consider what makes a 'good' company? . . .

(from http://www.goodcompanyindex.com/good-company/good-employer/)
The phrase good employer evokes images of generous, nice companies.  While such attributes are part of the equation, being a good employer is more complex – and more difficult to achieve.  There are many moving parts, tradeoffs, and judgments that companies must make with regard to their employees.

There are three main elements to being a good employer:
A value-creating organization committed to its employees, through active management of the organization’s leadership, work, and learning environments
Creating business intelligence for being a worthy employer; this makes it possible for a company to masterfully manage the tension between employees as costs and employees as assets
Providing an inspiring purpose with compelling answers to the questions “Whom is the company designed to benefit?” and “What is the company trying to achieve?”

Why would a company seek to be a good employer?  This is basic to being a good company for at least three reasons:
Employees are fundamental stakeholders in a company and deserve to be treated and managed well
Over the long run, it’s hard for companies to deliver great value to their customers if their employees are surly, disenfranchised, and/or in short supply
If companies mistreat or mismanage their workers and fail their customers, the company’s capacity to deliver value to its investors and other stakeholders will suffer correspondingly

Who. . .

. . . is the asshole????

Visiting a local vineyard/winery this weekend which presented a show by a local Shakespeare repertory company (The Shakespeare Factory-  a professional non-union ensemble company who employ the staging conditions of Shakespeare’s time as closely as possible for each production- see http://theshakespearefactory.com/).  Wine tastings were offered as well as stews and artisan bread to enhance the 'period' atmosphere.  I was 'tasting' the wines with the three, lovely ladies accompanying me for the production at one of the two, heavily attended tasting stations and attempting to allow the limited staff to attend to the willing tasters by grouping ourselves at the corner of the bar, myself at the bar and the others branching outward away from me and the bar and passing four glasses back and forth in attempt to allow the four of us to taste all six wines offered while leaving the remainder of the tasting station free for other tasters.

In the midst of an extremely enjoyable wine tasting experience (and the wines were quite good too) I noticed a rather sour looking gentleman at the far end of the crowd, the number of which I am not quite certain, who appeared to grow more perturbed as time passed.

Finally he stepped forward and said to ME, not to the person operating the tasting station,  that 'you have monopolized this tasting' and not allowed others to partake and . . . (not really sure exactly what else he said) but he was clearly unhappy that he had not gotten HIS WINE!  Guess you could say he was whining about his lack of wine.  I responded only by stating the obvious fact that this was a 'wine tasting' and that I and three others were together tasting our allotted six samples of wine.

The obviously conscientious caretaker of the tasting station quickly spoke up and asked the gentleman what he would like and assured him that it would be served forthwith.  The man, still clearly unhappy, took a glass (maybe two, I didn't really pay much attention to the details) and began to depart the station but in his befuddlement about the process of wine tasting and a possible desire to maintain his imaginary upper  hand, he made it a point to mumble unmistakably in my direction. . . "ASSHOLE."

Who do you think was the asshole????. . . . (and do you think this tragic situation left him 'heartbroken'?)
