Researchers' understanding of the complexities of the human brain has evolved, and so too has the notion of IQ, what it really means, and how it is most accurately captured. . . It is time to move on to using a more comprehensive set of tests that can measure separate scores for each type of intelligence. . . there are at least three components that affect overall performance on tests. These include short-term memory, reasoning, and verbal recall. . . Lifestyle factors count, too. For example, gamers -- or people who play a lot of computer games -- score higher on tests of reasoning and short-term memory. Smokers do poorly on tests assessing short-term memory and vocabulary, while test takers who have anxiety don't do as well on short-term memory tests, the study shows. . . IQ is a massive oversimplification of the spectrum of human cognitive ability. . . "

Everybody . . .

. . . wants one . . .


Many firms spend their 'quality' time with employees preaching on how the employees can do things differently, usually to the benefit of the company.  How many actually consider what makes a 'good' company? . . .

The phrase good employer evokes images of generous, nice companies.  While such attributes are part of the equation, being a good employer is more complex – and more difficult to achieve.  There are many moving parts, tradeoffs, and judgments that companies must make with regard to their employees.

There are three main elements to being a good employer:
    A value-creating organization committed to its employees, through active management of the organization’s leadership, work, and learning environments
    Creating business intelligence for being a worthy employer; this makes it possible for a company to masterfully manage the tension between employees as costs and employees as assets
    Providing an inspiring purpose with compelling answers to the questions “Whom is the company designed to benefit?” and “What is the company trying to achieve?”

Why would a company seek to be a good employer?  This is basic to being a good company for at least three reasons:
    Employees are fundamental stakeholders in a company and deserve to be treated and managed well
    Over the long run, it’s hard for companies to deliver great value to their customers if their employees are surly, disenfranchised, and/or in short supply
    If companies mistreat or mismanage their workers and fail their customers, the company’s capacity to deliver value to its investors and other stakeholders will suffer correspondingly

I know a man. . .

. . . whose name is Bill

With a very big plan
That required much skill

He planned well ahead
Made sure word got around
To all who're involved
But did all without sound
To the one that he loved
Cause he had to ensure
He would not
OUT be found

So for more than one year
Complex planning continued
All the details required
Every muscle and sinew

The loved ones invited
Vaccinations and sitting
Some expected some not
To another outwitting

But this man we call Bill
Had extraordinary ability
And he pulled the thing off
With uncanny agility

And a lesson is here
That we'd all well to learn
From investment required
And expected return

When you love someone dearly
The most difficult of feat
Can be easily accomplished
If you can just be discrete.
