Formulate AND stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop the picture…
Do not build up obstacles in your imagination.
-Norman Vincent Peale
To laugh often and much
to win the respect of intelligent people
and affection of children; to earn the
appreciation of honest critics and
endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty, to find the best
in others; to leave the world a bit
better, whether by a healthy child
a garden patch or redeemed
social condition; to know even
one life has breathed easier because
you have lived. This is to have
succeeded.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Kerouac
She comes out of the night she wrote every book you've read Fingering her pearl(s) every bead a lover dead She wears that feathered hat ends up burning on the bed Her freedom ring's not cheap the beast the till both must be fed
We twins sit on this leather seat this woman this man One lives the level of her heart the other's gland's in hand She serves that wicked brew opens minds opens eyes Holds up the looking glass cracks to cut the shame that binds
What is is what is not is too This emptiness inside includes The mystery awaiting moving you To be released and not removed
And she runs me down in my limousine And she picks me up in my limousine And we drive it home give our breath away Though I'm left alone no way am I the same
The hand extends the fingers eyed they fondle urging every word You only have what you give up fluxing in the flow Holding on to what you want will only keep it out of reach And lock you up inside yourself and block epiphany
Read the beat the rhythm takes and gives The bodies dance in primal play Forever steps alive into today Here each word points but does not say
And she runs me down in my limousine And she picks me up in my limousine And we drive it home give our breath away Though I'm left alone no way am I the same

A
collection of 28 weird high-energy neutrino hits from far beyond the
solar system represents the beginning of a new age of astronomy — and
the new neutrino astronomers say they already have more data yet to
report.
"This is something we've launched now," the
University of Wisconsin's Francis Halzen, principal investigator for the
international IceCube observatory in Antarctica, told NBC News. "We're
on a mission, so I don't think there's any time for relaxing."
IceCube
is the world's biggest neutrino detector, drawing data from light
sensors buried within a cubic kilometer of ice at the South Pole. It's
taken 15 years for the observatory to get from the drawing board and
through its construction phase to this point: In this week's issue of
the journal Science, Halzen and hundreds of other researchers in the
IceCube collaboration report the first big batch of high-energy
neutrinos traced to cosmic sources.
How high-energy?
Beyond a quadrillion electron volts, or nearly 100 times more energetic
than anything that can be smashed up in the world's most powerful
particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider. If scientists can
reliably trace these neutrinos to their source, they could lead to new
maps of the cosmos — and unlock longstanding mysteries of the universe.
"The
belief is that the very luminous and energetic sources which produce
the highest-energy cosmic rays are also supposed to produce high-energy
neutrinos," IceCube spokeswoman Olga Botner of Uppsala University said
in a Science video. "We sincerely hope that the neutrinos we have now
observed come from these sources, and within a small amount of time
we'll be able to perhaps solve the 100-year-old riddle of the origin of
cosmic rays." . . .
You said our love would last forever
It depends on what you mean by 'forever'
You said we'd always be together
It depends on what you mean by 'together'
You said you'd always want me near
And if I'd ever leave
You'd welcome me back
It depends on what you mean
It depends on what you mean by that
You're not distracted by another
It depends on what you mean by 'distracted'
You took a vow said you'd be faithful
It depends on what you think 'take a vow' means
You told me never have a fear
Nothing would change
No matter how the cards were stacked
It depends on what you mean
It depends on what you mean by that
I always hoped that you would be
Able to stop and turn around in your tracks
It depends on what you mean
It depends on what you mean by that

(from No One Left To Lie To; The Values of the Worst Family by Christopher Hitchens)
"The impression has been allowed to solidify that there was no price to be paid for all this; that the very definition of political skill was an ability to act without conscience. Appalled by the sheer raw ruthlessness of the President and his defenders, the Republicans and the conservative churches decided to call it a day. Marvin Olasky, the born-again Rightist who had originated the idea of "welfare reform" and been at Newt Gingrich's elbow, wrote a book on Presidential morality in which he said that if only Clinton had been a more regular churchgoer, and would even now ask for God's mercy, all might be well. It was no only liberals who failed the test set by Clintonism: the world of the "prayer breakfast" was his ally as surely as were the boardrooms and the Dow Jones. But millions of Americans still realized that something had been lost in the eight years of reptilian rule. The embarrassing emptiness of the 2000 election, especially the loss by the Democratic Party of even the slightest claim to any moral or ethical advantage, is one small symptom of what has been so casually thrown away. Meanwhile, the warm-blooded and the thin-blooded could only discuss the scaly and the remorseless in hushed tones, as the ensuing chapter will demonstrate. Perhaps one day the hot-blooded will have their revenge. . . "
Dear Global Economy, we thank thee for thy economies of scale, thy professional specialization, and thy international networks of trade under Ricardo's Law of Comparative Advantage, without which we would all starve to death while trying to assemble the ingredients for such a dinner as this. Amen. - Eliezer Yudkowsky
Let us take a moment to think about where the food we are about to enjoy has come from and to acknowledge those who worked to bring us this food. Let us appreciate the earth, the sun, the air, and the water needed to nourish the plants and animals. Let us thank the farmer who cared for the plants and animals and the migrant worker who toiled to harvest the crops. Let us thank the laborer who processed the food, the truck driver who brought the food, and the grocery store workers who displayed it. Finally, let us thank our friends who prepared this meal and have provided us with the opportunity to be together and share each other’s company. - Herb Silverman
We return thanks to our mother, the earth which sustains us. We return thanks to the rivers and streams, which supply us with water. We return thanks to all herbs which furnish medicines for the cure of our diseases. We return thanks to the moon and stars, which have given to us their light when the sun was gone. We return thanks to the sun, that has looked upon the earth with a beneficent eye. Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit, in Whom is embodied all goodness, and Who directs all things for the good of Her children. - Iroquois Prayer
This food is the gift of the whole universe - the sky, and much hard work. May we eat it in mindfulness, so as to be worthy to receive it. We accept this food so that we may practice the path of understanding and love.
-Thich Nhat Hanh
In the spirit of humility we give thanks for all that is. We thank the great spiritual beings who have shared their wisdom. We thank our ancestors who brought us to where we are now. We are grateful for the opportunity to walk this planet, to breathe the air, to taste the food, to experience sensations of a human body/mind, to share in this wonder that is life. We are grateful for the natural world that supports us, for the community of humankind that enables us to do many wondrous things. We are grateful that we are conscious, that as intelligent beings we can reflect upon the many gifts we have been given. - Unknown
