Soul . . .

“Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just, and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate, and eternal form.”
— attributed to Plato

Cheers . . .

. . . to the creativity, originality, perseverance, dedication, open-mindedness, talent, commitment, skill, technique, objectivity, sensitivity, imagination, character, integrity and friendship of Jay, David and Bill who made this song into a glorious musical statement, the depth (and heights) of which I could never have imagined when this composition was bestowed upon me by that mysterious and indescribable musical presence from beyond, which provides the stuff of which sustains me with each new day, almost twenty years ago.

Nothing Succeeds . . .

. . . like success

Formulate AND stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding.  Hold this picture tenaciously.  Never permit it to fade.  Your mind will seek to develop the picture…
Do not build up obstacles in your imagination.
-Norman Vincent Peale

To laugh often and much
to win the respect of intelligent people
and affection of children; to earn the
appreciation of honest critics and
endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty, to find the best
in others; to leave the world a bit
better, whether by a healthy child
a garden patch or redeemed
social condition; to know even
one life has breathed easier because
you have lived. This is to have
succeeded.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

If I Were. . .

. . . the Pope . . .

Yeah. I said the Pope.  Don't know why, but I dreamed the other night that I was elected Pope (and I don't recall that I was even running).  Well, actually I do know why I dreamed I was elected Pope.
I recently read "In God's Name: An Investigation Into the Murder of Pope John Paul I" by David Yallop and am in the midst of "Illustrissimi: The Letters of Pope John Paul I" by Albino Luciani.
Not that by any stretch of the imagination do these things qualify me for the office of Pope.  Obviously tuna salad with extra onion and two boiler-makers do indeed qualify me to DREAM that I have attained the office of Pope.

The first action that I took in my new position, if I recall the dream correctly, was RUN.  I'm not sure why I ran nor why I was being chased.  But run I did.  And all the while I was pondering the great changes that I will make as the new Pope.  I almost made sense that I was being chased in light of the radical nature of those changes.

Not sure if I would have been a good Pope. . . or a BAD one. . .

. . . but then we'll never really know.  Will we?

Close. . .

 . . . but no cigar

We complain the floor's uneven  When we simply don't know how to dance  In a sentimental treason  Each word is charged as every glance My foes approach and I start singing How do I defend against my friends?  The treasure buried where I fumbled  The ball into the tiger's den  Maddened fingers spar  With the laughing strings  I was very close but no cigar  We were on the corner with our cup The lad with light feet made the girl light up  Putting the pep back into the step  Where you would leap is now where I have leapt I'm an easy victim of nostalgia  I was making friends among the blind The filament was bright at high noon Radiating from the signs  Maddened fingers spar With the laughing strings It was very close but no cigar  Find the low denominator  With a hundred pairs of eyes  Leaning on an arm that failed us  Against the grain it's common life  I was choking on imagination  Still I know I get the gist   Sifting through a tired memory  In Paris turning with the twist

I Am I Firm Believer. . .

. . in forgiving. . . holding no grudge. . . showing mercy, tolerance, empathy etc. . .

But is it my imagination or does it seem that our public servants are becoming more and more depraved? Take the case of the recently discovered (and more recently admitted) and aptly named Anthony WEINER, for example.

Of course our professional legislators and executives are only human beings, and most folks know that FDR had extramarital relations. And don't forget John Kennedy, who may be the Julio Iglesias of politicians - but that is unverifiable by this writer and neither here nor there all the same. But ever since Bill (S.E.G.) Clinton faced a grand jury and said, ""It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true." Granted, the Republican accusers were merciless in their glee in catching old Bill in the act (so to speak). But nevertheless, would you really want to buy a used car from a guy like Clinton, let alone let him run your country?

Well, that's now ancient history. But you know, the above printed quote from the former president sounds uncannily and unsettlingly like a female candidate (non-candidate?) of the opposite party, for president currently in it's sentence structure, thoughtfulness, sincerity and articulation of clear,
concise
thought. . .
