How Far . . .

. . . and how LONG will we (U.S. Congress) allow this to continue??? (see Article II, Section 1, Clause 6 of the Constitution)

(from https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/17/opinions/snl-trump-emergency-declaration-obeidallah/index.html?fbclid=IwAR1xTEoJQRgPSVcix7awbo9F3tQtL2SzrSq2wMaN8 Dychh8qdo_QxpOZoO8)
". . . He (guess who?) first tweeted Sunday morning, "Nothing funny about tired Saturday Night Live on Fake News NBC! Question is, how do the Networks get away with these total Republican hit jobs without retribution? Likewise for many other shows? Very unfair and should be looked into. This is the real Collusion!". . . Then four minutes later, he tweeted in all caps -- telling us how he apparently now views the iconic comedy show as part of those threatening our nation: "THE RIGGED AND CORRUPT MEDIA IS THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!". . .Could Trump be laying the ground work to declare another national emergency to silence SNL?! Aside from the absurdity of the idea, it also violates the First Amendment right to free speech, as the American Civil Liberties Union was quick to point out. . . But before you dismiss the idea entirely, keep in mind two things. First, an Ipsos poll in August found that 44% of Republicans believe Trump should be able to close news outlets for "bad behavior." Do you have any doubt that if Trump called for comedy shows to be more "fair and balanced" in their criticism of Republicans, his base would not cheer? We might even see a majority of Trump fans support silencing "SNL," especially since the right has long viewed Hollywood and the entertainment industry as anti-Republican. (Of course, Trump and his base would undoubtedly never support forcing Fox News to truly be "fair and balanced."). . . "

Comfortable . . .

. . . with this? . . .

. . . why does anyone even ask this man questions???   These people are lying MOST of the time. . . how long are people going to pretend that this makes sense? . . .
. . . how long are people going to pretend that the few things, labeled 'accomplishments' have actually been a benefit to them ? . . .
. . .  how long are people going to pretend that this president actually CARES about them. . .
. . . how long are people going to pretend that only FOX news tells the truth and ALL OTHER media only broadcast 'fake' news . . .
. . . how long are people going to pretend than this 'man?' actually has their best interest at heart?. . .
. . . how long are people going to pretend that any 'consensus', 'agreement' or 'bipartisanship' can be employed as long as the current 'intercourse' continues. . .

Informed . . .

(from https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/articles/2018-01-30/information-overload-exhausting-americans-survey-says)
"A 2018 Gallup survey in partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a Miami-based non-profit that supports journalism, reports that 58 percent of respondents say staying well informed is difficult, while only 38 percent say they believe it's easy. . . "We are seeing people pulling back into their own little domains," Busteed says. "Seven out of of 10 Americans share articles only with people that they feel are like-minded. We have all these different sources of information out there but people are retrenching into their own social networks.". . . When it comes to who is responsible for ensuring Americans do get access to an accurate and politically balanced understanding of the news, the public is divided: 48 percent say the news media should be up for this task, while same percentage say the responsibility rests with individuals. . ."

Killers . . .

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin thinks video games, song lyrics and social media kill more people than guns (my interpretation of his statements in a recent post).  No action whatsoever on gun control is necessary, because THAT would not reduce the number of innocent deaths from school shootings. (!!!???)  While I'm not a fan of violent games, and would much prefer promotion of games that require critical thought instead, does Mr. Bevin truly believe that enacting and enforcing regulation of video games, song lyrics and social media (read 1st Amendment Rights) is a practical and effective route to reducing school shootings?  Whatever his answer, you can rest assured he will take much too much of your valuable time and much too many words to express it.

And Now . . .

". . . to the cheers of the crowd, Trump turned his attention from his attacks on the media, to numerous achievements he said he has accomplished in the first 100 days since the inauguration. . .
(the) decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, his appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, job creation, a crackdown on immigration and terrorism . . . He implied that he has refrained from labeling China a "currency manipulator" — as he pledged to do so as a candidate — because Chinese President Xi Jinping is helping the United States with North Korea. . . "It's a great thing." . . . (and) that coal mining jobs were returning and that he was reducing federal regulations "clearing up an environment of bureaucracy." He told the crowd Obamacare was dying and would be replaced, the Second Amendment would be protected, and gangs would be removed from the country. . . "

. . . Then, through sources which declined to be identified, he was heard to say, 'And now, I'm tired.  I want my milk and my nap.". . .

Not Good . . .

. . . Not Smart . . .

". . . The White House barred several news organizations from an off-camera press briefing . . . handpicking a select group of reporters that included a number of conservative outlets friendly toward Donald Trump. . . The “gaggle” with Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, took place in lieu of his daily briefing and was originally scheduled as an on-camera event. . . Donald Trump tells CPAC: 'We are Americans and the future belongs to us . . . But the White House press office announced later in the day that the Q&A session would take place off camera before only an . . . “expanded pool” of journalists, and in Spicer’s West Wing office as opposed to the James S Brady press briefing room where it is typically held. . . . Outlets seeking to gain entry whose requests were denied included the Guardian, the New York Times, Politico, CNN, BuzzFeed, the BBC, the Daily Mail and others. Conservative publications such as Breitbart News, the One America News Network and the Washington Times were allowed into the meeting, as well as TV networks CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC. The Associated Press and Time were invited but boycotted the briefing. . . . The decision to limit access to Spicer, hours after Trump once again declared that much of the media was “the enemy of the American people” while speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, marked a dramatic shift. . . ."

Doing It Wrong . . .

(from NBCNews.com)
". . . You're doing it wrong if you say the news media isn't covering terrorist attacks, and the list you release to prove your point includes San Bernardino and Paris. It undermines your credibility. . . A senior White House official explained the list this way: "The point here is that these terrorist attacks are so pervasive at this point that they do not spark the wall-to-wall coverage they once did. If you look back just a few years ago, any one of these attacks would have been ubiquitous in every news outlet, and now they're happening so often - at a rate of more than once every two weeks, according to the list we sent around - that networks are not devoting to each of them the same level of coverage they once did." . . . So if you take the White House at its word, what it wants is wall-to-wall coverage for every knife attack and every wounding. Why do they want that? What goal does that accomplish? So the White House wants the public to feel more terrorized? To what end?. . ."

Lie? . . .

(from http://qz.com/784533/new-york-times-editor-dean-baquet-on-donald-trump-we-will-call-out-lies/)
". . . The Huffington Post branded him a serial liar months ago. Now, the most traditional American media outlets have also abandoned journalistic diplomatese in their coverage of Republican candidate Donald Trump, and are reaching for new ways to flag the word “lie.” . . . In at least five articles in the New York Times on Sept. 17, including the lead story in the print edition, the words “lie,” “false,” “falsely claimed” and “untrue” appeared in headlines, lead paragraphs, and top sections of the paper’s Trump coverage. The day before, CNN’s Jake Tapper called Trump “the most prominent pusher of the birther lie,” the Associated Press reported that Trump “peddled another lie,” and a Washington Post headline declared, “It’s time for TV news to stop playing the stooge for Donald Trump.” . . . It’s a marked change in language, even for outlets that have aggressively reported on Trump’s appeals to violence and bigotry. And it’s especially startling coming from the ultra-traditional Times, which even in the new digital age remains a north star for much mainstream media coverage. . ."

Inadequate. . .

. . . education . . .

(from http://www.concordmonitor.com/Azzi-Trump-media-coverage-U-S-politics-1979775.aspx)
". . .‘It’s a universal law – intolerance is the first sign of an inadequate education,” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote. “An ill-educated person behaves with arrogant impatience, whereas truly profound education breeds humility.”. . . a sad reflection of the state of politics and education in America. Such is the result, too, of a media more obsessed with celebrity and acceptance than with representing the interests of civil society. . . Of a media more engaged with style than substance, profits than policy, access than accuracy. At a time where the political barbarism of Donald Trump – the original “Birther” who fed the anti-Obama movement from the beginning – has given license to his followers to engage in delusionary, racist rhetoric against women and whole communities of minority Americans, the press chose to treat Trump-ism as a soap-opera phenomena rather than as a challenge to American values. That there are Americans who are today celebrating the anointment of a charismatic professional bully, serial liar, misogynist, xenophobic demagogue who divides through hatred in order to conquer is not only the result of eight years of a nativist, racist revival movement but proof that a nation created on the promise of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness still has a long way to go to fulfill its promise to all its citizens. . . The very media that failed us after 9/11, that failed us during Afghanistan and Iraq and the so-called “War on Terror,” and later failed to directly confront institutional corruption, corporate oligarchs and ruling elites. Now, they have failed to directly confront the rise of nativism, white nationalism, bigotry and racism that followed President Obama’s election. . ."

The Race . . .

. . . in which we find ourselves. . .

. . . is particularly unique.  Never, in my short (or long- depending upon your perspective) do I remember such a dynamic.  It is clearly a matter of winner or loser;  meaning so (or TOO) many folks feel as though they must vote AGAINST someone because they feel so threatened by the other (meaning- one of the two major, conventional, press [and therefore: corporate] - sanctioned candidates) 'guy' that they are willing to pit their voting clout against one of two perceived choices this presidential cycle.

Well, the truth of the matter is - YOU DO NOT HAVE TO VOTE AGAINST someone, nor do you have to vote for one of two candidates.  No, no, no, no, NO!

Disingenuous? . . .

. . .  or conniving?

". . . Hillary claims that she has 2.5 million votes than Bernie Sanders. That claim is deceptive and disingenuous. . . Real Clear politics offers these numbers: Clinton 8,924,821, Sanders 6,397, 980
. . . Technically, it's accurate, but that's because of the nature of the primary election in many states where there are caucuses. In Caucus states, a lot less people participate in the voting because of the time involved. But those delegates represent millions of people. . . In reality her claim is another Hillary distortion, a reflection of the dishonesty that leads to her being highly distrusted by most voters. But none of the mainstream media have called her on this distortion. . ."

One More . . .

". . . It has been a dreadful performance by the press and by party leaders. They are speaking in such a way as to naturalize the creepy, weird and completely un-American positions Trump has taken.

This is how the dictators came to power in the 1920s and 1930s. Good people remained silent or acquiesced. People expressed hope that something good would come of it. Mussolini would wring the laziness out of Italy and make the trains run on time.

When Benjamin Franklin was asked by a lady after the Constitutional Convention what sort of government the US had, he said, “A Republic, Madame, if you can keep it.”

You have to wonder if we can keep it. . ."

The Problem . . .

(from Outsider in the White House by Bernie Sanders with Huck Gutman)
". . . The problem with television is not just what is reported but, more importantly, what is not reported.  it's no accident that we get thousands of hours of discussion about the O.J. Simpson trial and almost no discussion about the growing gap between rich and poor or our regressive tax system. Why is it that there is massive coverage of airplane crashes, but almost no coverage of corporate disinvestment in the United States?. . . "

In Some Ways . . .

. . . I actually sympathize with Palin.   I've been in situations where I was unprepared for what I was to face and certainly regretted the way in which I reacted . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin_interviews_with_Katie_Couric)
". . . COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this—to stay informed and to understand the world?

PALIN: I've read most of them again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media, coming f—

COURIC: But like which ones specifically? I'm curious that you—

PALIN: Um, all of 'em, any of 'em that, um, have, have been in front of me over all these years. Um, I have a va—

COURIC: Can you name a few?

PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news too. Alaska isn't a foreign country, where, it's kind of suggested and it seems like, 'Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C. may be thinking and doing when you live up there in Alaska?' Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America. . . "

. . . but then, I wasn't running for the office of Vice President of the United States of America either . . .
