Opinion . . .

. . . worth noting . .  .

(from https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/vote-against-the-gop-this-november/2018/06/22/a6378306-7575-11e8-b4b7-308400242c2e_story.html?utm_term=.857ab8aeb4c8 by George Will, conservative, American political commentator who writes regular columns for The Washington Post and provides commentary for NBC News and MSNBC)
". . . Consider the melancholy example of House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (Wis.), who wagered his dignity on the patently false proposition that it is possible to have sustained transactions with today’s president, this Vesuvius of mendacities, without being degraded. In Robert Bolt’s play “A Man for All Seasons,” Thomas More, having angered Henry VIII, is on trial for his life. When Richard Rich, whom More had once mentored, commits perjury against More in exchange for the office of attorney general for Wales, More says: “Why, Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world . . . But for Wales!” Ryan traded his political soul for . . . a tax cut. He who formerly spoke truths about the accelerating crisis of the entitlement system lost everything in the service of a president pledged to preserve the unsustainable status quo. . ."

Reasons . . .

Why the beguiling smirking smile?
There's mystery behind those dark eyes
Can I trust that my best interest kept?
I need answers to these many "whys"

Summer's gone now, leaves have changed
The usual, natural switch
The hole I'm feeling in my soul
May be a reason for the stitch

Heart . . .

Have you no heart
And no feelings; no soul?
Do the words
Empathy, sympathy seem hard to comprehend?
I guess you should
Answer the first

Have you no children
So close and so dear
That separation
Would not hurt?
I guess you should
Answer the first

Have you no neighbor
Who may need something more
To make her life better;
To survive her own storm?
I guess you should
Answer the first

Have you no sense of decency;
Integrity;  principles
When it comes to another one’s life
Since you claim you are “Pro”?
But I guess you should
Answer the first

Have you no sense of what is really right
Can you feel any feeling
Do you have any sight
For disaster that surrounds you?
I guess you should
Answer the first . . .

Have you no heart
And no feelings; no soul?

Soul . . .

“Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just, and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate, and eternal form.”
— attributed to Plato

Season . . .

The air betrays a chill
That while not unfamiliar
Is new to my summery soul
And the dark overpowers the sun
With a frequency not forgotten
Nor always welcome

Experience teaches me that such times
Must surely follow heat and light
And the seasons like life
Will turn turn turn
Like all the rest my years
As well will run their course

. . . in time

Glitter . . .

. . . Many and new contemporaries and adults were introduced into my life with the addition of formal education to my daily routine. These new experiences did not so much teach me that everything and everyone on this earth were not always good, honest and sincere people, but it did confirm that. But I still managed to retain a certain optimism, in spite of it. Deep down, bullies who punched me in the stomach and ran (brave, huh?), nasty classmates who whispered and giggled to each other in my presence, the abrasive girl on the schoolbus that made fun of me, the guys that would never choose me to be on their team (I was NOT athletic) and the teachers who scolded the entire class for something obviously perpetrated by one misguided soul - could not dissuade me from the notion that the world was still a good place and that most people within it were still very much good. I firmly believed that.

Amateurs . . .

plural noun: amateurs
    • a person considered contemptibly inept at a particular activity.

". . . The Republican Fausts are in an untenable position. The deal they’ve struck with the devil comes at too high a price. It really will cost them their soul. . . if Trump’s ideology were not noxious, his incompetence is a threat to all around him. To say that it is amateur hour at the White House is to slander amateurs. . . (the) administration is less a government than a small clique of bloggers and tweeters who are incommunicado with the people who actually help them get things done. . ."

Long . . .

. . . to be Latin . . .

We spin on an axis as bold as love round a sun that’s alight with fire

It’s true our time is marked by the man in the moon

Don’t walk ahead, don’t walk behind, just be my friend and walk by my side

It’s real, this life is by in the blink of an eye.

I live and I long to be Latin as beauty rebels against time

I live and I long to be Latin

The cardinal wish for the scent of the red summer rose.

We have walked the dream palace of yesterday

Where myth is truth and the proof’s hearsay

Memories disguised by the ways that we wish they could be

The drives and input are well defined

Lies rolling off dying tongues chill the soul

Chained in gold we walk a lifelong line.

I live and I long to be Latin.  I’m waiting to see my own eyes

I live and I long to be Latin

But what will I wear to the end of the world, my demise?

Upon the chipped dish the rich and pure fare of the love feast, kissing the sky

As we hold hands in a ring, the night to morning link

Contacts with the light

Be my friend, we can walk side by side

Don’t walk ahead you know I won’t walk behind

Though we stumble through our fears and tears

To the cadence and the tune of the spheres.

I live and I long to be Latin to live the fool and die the sage

I reach and intend to be Latin

To make vision real in the face of chance and circumstance

I live and I long to be Latin to take my stand against routine

I live and I long to be Latin

Where living at risk means I can see what others don’t see.

Absolutely . . .

 . . . nothing! . . .

(from Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann, translation by John E. Woods)
". . . We are lost.  Which is to say: The war is lost, and that means more than a lost campaign, it means that we in fact are lost - lost, our cause and soul, our faith and our history. Germany is done for, or will be done for. AN unutterable collapse - economic, political, moral and spiritual -- in shor, an all-embracing collapse looms ahead.  Not that I would have wished for what threatens us, for it is despair, it is madness. Not that I would have wished it, because my pity, my forlorn compassion, is far too deep for this unhappy nation; and when I think back ten years to its awakening and blind fervor, to the uprising that broke forth to break open and break down, to the new beginning that was to purify everything, to our popular and national rebirth, to that specious holy ecstasy, in which, to be sure, were mixed, as warning signed of its treachery, so much savage brutality and hulking vulgarity, so much obscene lust to violate, torture, humiliate, and which, as every sensible person knew, already bore war, this entire war within it . . . "

No Opera . . .

. . . but Great . . .

(from https://www.dustygroove.com/item/414042 review of The Pointer Sisters Live at the Opera House)
". . . No opera here – but a really unique early live show by The Pointer Sisters, one that shows the Bay Area quartet to be one of the most diverse soul acts of their generation! The double-length set features the girls singing a mix of older jazz tunes and a few newer tracks – scatting in vocalese one minute, and singing straighter soul the next – all with larger group backing from an orchestra directed by Tom Salisbury. There's a real "show" feeling to the album – as it was recorded even with the group's introduction on stage, as well as plenty of crowd response and an overall format that gets at the highly-entertaining mode of the Pointers in their early years. . ."

Mercy . . .

. . . mercy, mercy . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercy,_Mercy,_Mercy)
"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" is a song written by Joe Zawinul in 1966 for Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and his album Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at 'The Club'. The song is the title track of the album and became a surprise hit. "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" went to #2 on the Soul chart and #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. been re-recorded numerous times, most notably by The Buckinghams who reached # 5 in August 1967, adding lyrics to the tune. musicians on the Buckingham's version included James Henderson, Lew McCreary and Richard Leith on trombone, Bill Peterson, Bud Childers on trumpet, John Johnson on sax, Lincoln Mayorga on Wurlitzer electric piano, Dennis Budimir on guitar, Carol Kaye on bass, and John Guerin on drums. It was also recorded by The Mauds in 1967, with lyrics by Curtis Mayfield. It has now become a jazz standard performed by both beginner and advanced jazz musicians. It was also recorded by Willie Mitchell in 1968 as the B-side of his single "Soul Serenade."

Fever . . .

. . . courtesy of OHO. . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco)
". . . Disco is a genre of dance music containing elements of funk, soul, pop, and salsa that was most popular in the mid to late 1970s, though it has had brief resurgences. Its initial audiences were club-goers from the gay, African American, Italian American, Latino, and psychedelic communities in New York City and Philadelphia during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Disco also was a reaction against both the domination of rock music and the stigmatization of dance music by the counterculture during this period. Women embraced disco as well, and the music eventually expanded to several other marginalized communities of the time. . ."

Auld Lang Syne . . .

. . . no matter how hard we wish next year to be good, prosperous, happy, healthy or joyous, a year is a year.  Like life, most of it will depend upon our choices.  And as we well know we must go on when we lose people in our lives. But some part of them must and will live on.

This poem is for Paul Penwell, a longtime Frederick are open mike participant; regular performer and workshop presenter, blues guitarist and songwriter Marjorie Thompson; and Ricardo, the Divining Sage(Richard White), guitarist extraordinaire and an old soul who helped many . . .

ABSENT FRIENDS

It was not cold but overcast,
A neutral afternoon for Christmas,
Not pointing anywhere,
Not suggesting anything,
Limned by a room splashed full of
Scarlet and white poinsettias;
Neutral plants from Mexico,
When I heard a guitar line
Falter and fade, ascending;
We have our exits and
Our entrances…

Another year –
Auld Lang Syne –
For the sake of times gone by
We take a cup of kindness
Or a glass of wine or whiskey
And salute old friends;
Our cast of characters
Changes, despite our
Holding on tightly...

So, to absent friends, who
Enriched us here, thank you!
But you moved on too abruptly,
Though maybe leaving us with
Sage counsel, or echoes –
Whispers; notes rippling and
Ringing through our memories...

-Rod Deacey
