Tango . . .

. . . is 'Ognat' backwards . . .

(from https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/the_cold_generation_1246364)
They don’t dance the tango in Argentina anymore
but you can do the twist alone but keep your distance.
However, the elegant the waltz is out, superb dresses
is not a defence against the virus.
To do the swing is awkward to without a hand to hold
on to, I don’t know about square dance though.
We are becoming a withdrawn society, like the Swedes
they are not famed for warmth and kisses.
That is the way they have *****-industry to make up for
the lack of intimacy.

Ognat . . .

. . . is Tango backwards . . .

". . . Tango is a partner dance, and social dance that originated in the 1880s along the Río de la Plata, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay. It was born in the impoverished port areas of these countries, with enslaved African populations. The tango is the result of a combination of African Candombe, Spanish-Cuban Habanera, and Argentinian Milonga. The tango was frequently practiced in the brothels and bars of ports, where business owners employed bands to entertain their patrons with music. The tango then spread to the rest of the world. Many variations of this dance currently exist around the world. . ."

Roomful . . .

Love triumphs, I’ve heard, over all
Is it really true?
One many-splendored thing
Conquering each
Obstacle revealed

Gathered for this occasion
Politely civil in a social dance
Mannerly respectful discourse
All in a room that’s full of elephants

Talk; civility must be maintained
So we don’t set them free

How many people
Exist right here in this place
So much the same
Pride always goes
Before the fall so they say
It’s like a parade

Don’t think its your own imagination
‘Cause its it’s real
Though circus-like
True these pachyderms
Cannot be viewed

Crosshairs . . .

Caught in the the crosshairs
Of my poison-dart, marauding rifle
But then what can a body do?
‘You’re not the man you used to be’
You say with certain relish
But then again you’re here with me
And though you surely cannot hide
You’ll try to run for certain
And I will follow where you go
As we perpetuate the dance
We’ve done through all the ages
Ours is much more than just a show

Bought my ticket
Took time off for
The drama of life
Front row orchestra
Tux, tails just for
The drama of life

Some choose their circumstances
With a dearth of careful thinking
Some can’t make any choice at all
But all the options must be weighed
Outcomes evaluated
And for some flavor add some salt

Take an intermission
Look at what you’re missing

It’s not a natural
Or a simple kind of undertaking
Half-heartedness won’t make it so
To rise above self-serving vanities
Makes all the difference
Sometimes that’s all you need to know

Run . . .

. . . with it . . .

Whenever seated on the bench
In front of ivory, wood and wire,
I want to make a masterpiece
From nothing

Illogical? Maybe
Impossible? No
Consistently possible?
Most certainly not

It should be catchy, memorable, nice
It can swoon, cajole and even rock
It can swing and lilt and make you dance
But sometimes it can run amok

Morton 2 . . .

One day, Morton the mantis was feasting upon a sumptuous array of beetles, grasshoppers and crickets when, off in the distance, he spotted what appeared to him to be, a most gorgeous lady-mantis in obvious search for food. This, thought Morton, could be the fulfillment of his every dream. A mate with whom he could share his insect bounty, and maybe even his very future, a prospect for which he always had yearned. The lady-mantis lured Morton with her pheromones. Suddenly, Morton felt an inescapable urge to dance. He danced and danced approaching her ever so closely.  His dance brought him within touching distance of her and he found that she seemed agreeable to his close presence now.  He began, without fully understanding how or why, to climb upon her back as she was much larger than he in size. Then, as conscious thought and action grabbed a backseat and instinct took over, the two became one in a timeless tango of passion and procreation. Then after a period, as females of the mantis persuasion often do, she bit off his head and devoured his corpse for nourishment.

Kind Of . . .

. . . like it . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_tango)
". . . Tango is a dance that has influences from African and European culture. Dances from the candombe ceremonies of former slave peoples helped shape the modern day tango. The dance originated in lower-class districts of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The music derived from the fusion of various forms of music from Europe. The words "tango" and "tambo" around the River Plate basin were initially used to refer to musical gatherings of slaves, with written records of colonial authorities attempting to ban such gatherings as early as 1789. . . Initially, it was just one of the many dances, but it soon became popular throughout society, as theatres and street barrel organs spread it from the suburbs to the working-class slums, which were packed with hundreds of thousands of European immigrants. . . In Argentina, the onset in 1929 of the Great Depression, and restrictions introduced after the overthrow of the Hipólito Yrigoyen government in 1930, caused tango to decline. Its fortunes were reversed as tango became widely fashionable and a matter of national pride under the government of Juan Perón. Tango declined again in the 1950s, as a result of economic depression and the banning of public gatherings by the military dictatorships; male-only Tango practice—the custom at the time—was considered "public gathering". . ."

Wisely . . .

. . . managed . . .
. . . time. . .

. . . when Cinderella danced with the prince, a compunction she found unavoidable after making eye contact across the crowded room. . .

". . . The actual Cinderella tale, while a nebulous thing that can be hard to pin down with precision, is more than that. There's very little that's common to every variant of the story, but in general, you have a mistreated young woman, forced to do menial work, either cast out or unloved by her family. She has an opportunity to marry well and escape her situation, but she gets that chance only after being mistaken for a higher-status person, so she has to get the man who may marry her to recognize her in her low-status form, which often happens either via a shoe that fits or some kind of food that she prepares. . . It's partly a fantasy about simplifying the relationships between social standing and coupling — one that makes the most sense in a world in which class differences are an accepted barrier to a good man choosing to marry a woman. If the prince is a man who believes from the outset that love conquers all, the story doesn't really make any sense. It would be hard to set Cinderella on a properly functioning egalitarian collective. . ."

Cut . . .

. . . the rug. . .

. . . and then, I learned to dance.  Not literally.  Well, yes literally.  Not that I am a good dancer or that I dance frequently.  But the figurative dancing came eventually. Throughout my middle and high school years, I remained the awkward, chubby and uncomfortable person that I was in elementary school with only slightly improved self-esteem and confidence.  Some social skills, if you will, were developed. I essentially chose my 'crowd', said very little, agreed with (and to) quite a lot, and in essence, slowly learned to 'dance'. . .

But . . .

. . . that was yesterday . . .

Finally, a 'club' that required exactly the musical product we, 'Ful Treatment,' were offering.  It was a relatively roomy, oblong configuration with a large rectangular bar that encircled the tending staff, located at one end with a dance floor to the side and a stage at the far end of that. It was located in an industrial area to the south of the city, in close proximity to the docks, business of which brought many merchant marine and an assortment of blue-collar clientele for some weekend reverie. In fact, we frequently, unfairly generalizing, joked about the patrons' general lack of teeth and violent tendencies.  Let's face it though, large amounts of quickly consumed alcohol frequently result in less-than-gentlemanly behavior in humans, irrespective of type of employment or socioeconomic level. . . Our bigotry was not based entirely in fiction though.  One particularly well-lubricated Friday night crowd included two, physically imposing females, complete with the teased, bouffant hairdo, each with a personalized version of a blond-streak adornment.  Someone in the crowd was heard to refer to these ladies as 'skunk-heads', referring to the aforementioned blond coloring. As the evening progressed, it became obvious to us that night that the 'skunk-heads' had become enamored with several male members of the crowd.  It became more obvious still later, that there was some discontent among the party of ladies and their newly-found, romantic interests.  Eventually a real, true-to-life bar brawl erupted as a result of the developing sexual tension (or was it friction?)  When the fists began flying, one of the involved merchant marines picked up a chair from a table adjoining the dance floor, and broke it over the head of his antagonist, sending a wooden chair leg hurling meteor-like onto the bandstand.  It seemed as though the frame froze at that point, all sound ceased, and we all stared toward the crowd, mouths agape in astonishment for what seemed to be a short eternity, but ended with Greg (our saxman/vocalist) picking up the disconnected furniture appendage, waving it in the direction of the audience saying something to the effect that he dared anyone to 'try anything NOW!' . . .

The Beach . . .

. . . the video . . .

On your mark get set
Disconnect that internet
Every girl and boy
Breathing in the joy
Not a care at last
Sit outside and bask
In rays of summer's bliss

Crabs and fish and shells
Feel your tensions melt
Fries and pizza pie
Smiles won't be denied
Everything is cool
in 2 1 8 4 2
Feel the sparkle in your eyes

Catch a wave and ride
Cars and motorbikes
Bikini babes in the sand
Vibin' to rockin' bands
Ocean City

From Memorial to Labor Day
We beckon you to play
To a boardwalk beat
Miles and miles of beach
Your memories to take
Currents dance and sway
leave your footprints in the sand

Fireworks at night
Give your love a kiss
Sail and fish the sea
Here life is a beach
in Ocean City

Now is the time that's right
For you only live once
Time does drag when it's all work and no fun
The ocean gateway calls you
Sport your shorts and shades
It's so divine to dine at life's buffet
It's almost heaven and
There's so much more we can say

Catch a wave and ride
Cool cars and motorbikes
Bikinis on the sand
Dance to rockin' bands

Fever . . .

. . . courtesy of OHO. . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco)
". . . Disco is a genre of dance music containing elements of funk, soul, pop, and salsa that was most popular in the mid to late 1970s, though it has had brief resurgences. Its initial audiences were club-goers from the gay, African American, Italian American, Latino, and psychedelic communities in New York City and Philadelphia during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Disco also was a reaction against both the domination of rock music and the stigmatization of dance music by the counterculture during this period. Women embraced disco as well, and the music eventually expanded to several other marginalized communities of the time. . ."

Waltz . . .

. . . me NOT!  (the composition 'Wisdom' has evolved [or devolved] back to its original non-waltz format.  Click below to hear.)

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waltz_(music)
". . . The name "waltz" comes from the German verb walzen, in turn taken from the Latin verb volvere, which describes the turning or rotating movement characteristic of the dance. Although French writers have attempted to connect the waltz to the 16th century volta, firm evidence connecting this Italian form to the earliest occurrence in the mid‑18th century of walzen to describe dancing is lacking. . . Classical composers traditionally supplied music for dancing when required, and Franz Schubert's waltzes (including the Valses Sentimentales and Valses Nobles) were written for household dancing, without any pretense at being art music. However, Frédéric Chopin's surviving 18 waltzes (five he wrote as a child), along with his mazurkas and polonaises, were clearly not intended for dance. They marked the adoption of the waltz and other dance forms as serious composition genres. Other notable contributions to the waltz genre in classical music include 16 by Johannes Brahms (originally for piano duet), and Maurice Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales for piano and La valse for orchestra (Lamb 2001). . . The long period of the waltz's popularity was brought to an end by the First World War, which destroyed the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the Viennese culture which had nurtured it for so long. European light music shifted from Vienna to Berlin, and compositions by composers such as Gustav Mahler, Igor Stravinsky, and William Walton treated the dance in a nostalgic or grotesque manner as a thing of the past. Waltzes nevertheless continued to be written by composers of light music, such as Eric Coates, Robert Stolz, Ivor Novello, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Oscar Straus, and Stephen Sondheim. The predominant ballroom form in the 20th century has become the slow waltz, which rose to popularity around 1910 and was derived from the valse Boston of the 1870s. . ."
