Careful . . .

. . . thought

(from Thomas Jefferson; The Art of Power by Jon Meacham)
". . . Later he told his nephew that religion required careful thought, not reflexive acceptance. "Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear.". . . "

Judging . . .

". . . Judge Kavanaugh in 2010 wrote a lengthy concurrence drawing on American historical tradition and the original meaning of the Constitution to defend the invocation of God and the practice of prayer at official government ceremonies, such as the presidential inauguration and Supreme Court sittings. The Supreme Court adopted a similar approach several years later in upholding prayer before a town meeting in New York. . ."

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_church_and_state_in_the_United_States)
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...". . . (and in a) letter by Thomas Jefferson, addressed to the Danbury Baptist Association in Connecticut, and published in a Massachusetts newspaper. Jefferson wrote, "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. . . One Way? . . .

(from 1,000 Lashes; Because I Say What I Think by Raif Badawi [Edited by Constantin Schreiber and Translated by Ahmed Danny Ramadan)
". . . Many of those who judge liberalism are ignorant about what it really means. They try to advertise liberalism as a line of thinking that rejects religion, somehow suggesting liberalism is a religion of its own. This cannot be further from the truth. . . Many of these people are reluctant to accept anything modern. They loather anything that gives humans their right to freedom. They fear this will pull the carpet from underneath the clerics, whose sole trade is in buying people's minds. They continue to promote liberalism as moral decay and degeneration. . . "

. . . Not unlike our Hannities, Coultors and Limbaughs. . .

Absolutes . . .

. . . and easy answers . . .

". . . Under the First Amendment, Americans enjoy two freedoms with respect to religion: the right to be free from a government-imposed religion, and a right to practice any religion. While private employers are not bound by the Constitution's restrictions on government, they are subject to federal and state laws that ban religious discrimination in employment. Given the number of employed persons and the variety of religious faiths in this country, and the freedom we enjoy to express our views, the subject of religious discrimination continues to pose tough questions for employers and the courts. . ."

If religious discrimination in employment is banned by federal and state laws, should a company be allowed to discriminate against a specific group of human beings (gays, lesbians, transgender individuals?) which has equal rights with the company federal and state laws by refusing to provide services to them?

Priestly . . .

(from Treatise on the Gods by H.L. Mencken)
". . . the first priest probably found it much harder to support such pretentions than it is today, for the science of theology was still in its infancy.  One can easily imagine rivals essaying to talk him down, and even laughing at him. Was the tribe as a whose with him or against him? The chances are that it was more or less divided, for in the domain of religion the human mind is naturally somewhat flighty, and what one man believes another is sure to doubt. If the first priest was prudent, as he probably was, he soon grasped the fact that his monopoly could not last, and sought to save what he could of it by compromise.  That is to say, he sought to dispose of his most formidable rival by admitting him as an apprentice and so gaining his help. The two priests bloomed where only one had bloomed before, and presently there was a whole guild of them, and they began to act in cooperation, pooling their professional secrets and equipment, accumulating a tradition and acquiring a definite place in society. . ."

Beliefs. . .

Somebody should tell this guy that no one is taking away his freedom of speech or his religion. . . I don't believe in ghosts but would happily sell my CDs to him, if he was interested. . . . (from http://www.rawstory.com/2015/07/baptist-pastor-bans-gays-from-his-tennessee-hardware-store-no-ill-never-regret-this/) ". . . Jeff Amyx, a Baptist minister who owns Amyx Hardware & Roofing Supplies in Grainger County, said he got to thinking Monday morning, after a Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality, that Christians were the victim of a double standard that allowed homosexuals to stand up for their beliefs but not religious people. “They gladly stand for what they believe in — why can’t I?” Amyx told WBLR. “They believe their way is right, I believe it’s wrong — but yet I’m going to take more persecution than them because I’m standing for what I believe in.” . . . Music . . .

"The memory of things gone is important to a jazz musician."
Louis Armstrong

“Music is my religion.”
Jimi Hendrix

“But sometimes, talent isn't worth shit. There are tons of talentless people out there making zillions of dollars. And unfortunately, an equal number of brilliant artists whose name and voices you'll never hear. . .”
Tiffanie DeBartolo

"... when you're making money, people don't think you're playing jazz. Now when you're not making money, people think that you're a good jazz musician."
Pete Fountain

"When you hear music, after it’s over, it’s gone, in the air, you can never capture it again."
Eric Dolphy

Freedom and the Press . . .

(from http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/paris-magazine-attack/charlie-hebdo-shooting-12-killed-muhammad-cartoons-magazine-paris-n281266)
". . . Twelve people were killed Wednesday when masked gunmen armed with AK-47s attacked the offices of a French satirical news magazine which has published cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad. . . One of the magazine's editors, Gerard Biard, told France Inter radio: "I don't understand how people can attack a newspaper with heavy weapons. A newspaper is not a weapon of war." Hollande added that several other attacks had been thwarted in France "in recent weeks." "No barbaric act will ever extinguish the freedom of the press," Hollande said in a tweet. "We are a united country." . . ."

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion . . .
-John Adams

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual. . . The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.
-Thomas Jefferson

Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins.  Republics and limited monarchies derive their strength and vigor from a popular examination into the action of the magistrates.
-Benjamin Franklin

A Will? . . .

(from Treatise On The Gods by H.L. Mencken)
". . . The earliest religion, I daresay, arose out of some extraordinary series of calamities, unprecedented and intolerable. As the cells of his cortex multiplied, primitive man found even the ordinary discomforts of life increasingly disagreeable, but it is probable that he was still too close to his infra-human forebears to do anything about them. When it rained, and there was no cave or thicket handy, he simply got wet, as the other mammals got wet. When food was scarce he chewed on twigs. When it was cold he shivered. When a rival stole his wife he sent without the domestic consolations until the rival tired of her, or he could make and wive a widow. All such misfortunes were unpleasant, and the new trick of thinking made them more so, but they tended to be transient, and they were not often fatal, nor even disabling. Beyond them lurked others of a greater fearsomeness: drowning, dropping sunstruck, getting killed by lightning, by wild beasts of by falling rocks and trees, dying in general. An inimical volition seemed to lurk in all of them. It was not hard to imagine some evil will throwing down the avalanche, or sending the lightning, or drawing the drowning man down to death. In fact, it was easier to imagine it than not to imagine it. . . "

What If . . .

(from http://www.partnershipway.org/learn-more/articles-by-riane-eisler/spirituality-sexuality/making-sex-a-sacred-pleasure by Jyotsna Sreenivasan)
". . . sexuality were a sacred, celebrated part of our religion and culture? What if sexual love, nurturing, and women's life-giving powers were seen as the most important subjects of art and literature? What if children were taught these values along with their ABCs? That's the vision of Riane Eisler, author of the influential best-seller The Chalice and The Blade.

In her new book, Sacred Pleasure: Sex, Myth, and the Politics of the Body (Harper and Row, 1995), Eisler argues that a world in which sexual love is sacred is also a world of peace, caring, and respect for others. Eisler challenges current Western notions of sexuality by revealing that prehistoric European egalitarian cultures actually revered sexuality and bodily pleasure as part of their religion. She contrasts this with many modern religious traditions, which revere war, martyrdom, and asceticism while denigrating sexuality and pleasure. . ."
