Illumination . . .

Threshold of credibility
Always looming
Rarely crossed
Is there something I'm missing
Has integrity been tossed?
Is there dearth of some real caring?
Has all principle long died?
Did the human race turn-tail and run
From improvement; evolution?
Are we truly moving backwards
Far from knowledge towards confusion?

We . . .

I would like think that human beings, as a species, are continuously evolving.  By evolution, I mean progressing in our thought processes to attain a higher level of understanding of who (and what) we really are and of our relationship with each other and the world in which we live. I am now realizing, in my later years, that while this is not untrue, this process does and will not affect all, nor even the majority, of the populace. Truth is, a very small number of us appear to grasp the subtleties, as well of the value, of this progress. . . a very disappointing fact.

Forward . . .

. . . onward, upward . . .

I like the term evolution, meaning simply growing, getting better, getting smarter, being more cognizant of your surroundings and better understanding how to interact with them in order to improve my current condition and the condition of those that will remain when I am no longer. So forward I look.  Not in a doomsday or defeatist way, but in a positive way that says how can I best spend what little or what great amount of time I have left? And I certainly view that with my close ones in mind, not to mention mankind in general. But I also view it in a musical sense in that no matter how wisely or unwisely I have effectively utilized my creative time until now, I intend to use the time remaining before me in an even more creatively effective way and continue, to the best of my abilities, to make more music

Forward

Tribes . . .

(from http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/13/books/review/the-social-conquest-of-earth-by-edward-o-wilson.html)
on  ‘The Social Conquest of Earth,’ by Edward O. Wilson
". . . one can stack up log-style all humans alive today into a cube that’s about a mile on each side, easily hidden in the Grand Canyon. And all the ants on earth would fit into a cube of similar size. More important, humans and certain insects are the planet’s “eusocial” species — the only species that form communities that contain multiple generations and where, as part of a division of labor, community members sometimes perform altruistic acts for the benefit of others. . .

. . . Wilson’s own theory is far too extreme, though. He adopts a Manichaean view of evolution, in which group selection is responsible for all of our virtues (“honor, virtue and duty”), while individual selection produces nothing but sin (“selfishness, cowardice and hypocrisy”). But it’s long been known that unrelated individuals can benefit from repeated cooperation with one another, so long as there are mechanisms in place to encourage reciprocity and punish betrayal. There is now evidence — from computational modeling, observations of real-world human interactions and laboratory studies — showing that our altruistic and eusocial choices are sensitive to past interactions with individuals and that we are inclined to reward cooperators and punish cheats and free-riders. This evidence suggests that group conflict is not the sole force that has shaped human eusociality. Wilson must be familiar with this research, but doesn’t acknowledge how it complicates his account. . . "

Thinking. . .

". . . how did Todd Akin get nominated for the Senate in the first place? How did Christine O’Donnell in Delaware? How did Donald Trump surge to the top of the early presidential polls after his birther blather became public? Why do so many Republicans have so much trouble with evolution? Climate change? The non-difference between forcible and statutory rape?

This is not to say that Republicans are, by natural bent, stupid. Indeed, many of the smartest, most erudite, most creative policy thinkers I’ve encountered over the past 40 years are Republicans or conservatives. They’ve been the source of some of the best policy proposals I’ve seen–including the individual mandate for health care, cap and trade (to limit sodium sulfur-dioxide), school choice, work requirements for welfare recipients. In foreign policy, they’ve been well-represented by realists like Brent Scowcroft, James Baker, Bob Zoellick and their boss, George H.W. Bush.

(MORE: Best Tweets About Todd Akin’s ‘Legitimate Rape’ Comment)

But the Republican Party that produced such thinkers is, as we all know, gone now. And what we have is a party that too often acquiesces–with rolled eyes and grimaces, to be sure–in the know-nothing idiocy of a plurality of its base. There was a period when the Democrats suffered from a similar malady–the days of racial quotas, overweening sociological tolerance of criminality and the belief that the U.S. is almost always wrong when it uses force overseas. The Democrats still have some outliers who believe such things. But Bill Clinton showed that Democrats could reform themselves; Barack Obama’s reliance on ideas that were originally Republican or bipartisan in much of his domestic agenda is a reflection of the permanence of that change. . . Plain and simple . . .

 . . . but gets the point across. . .
(from The Science of Mind by Earnest Holmes)
". . . the whole end and aim of evolution is to produce a man who, in his self-conscious state, may depict the Divine Nature. . . '

On what day. . .

. . . did God make fossils?

'. . . In a nod to a dramatic shift in public opinion, Barack Obama on Wednesday became the first sitting president to announce his support for same-sex marriage. . . "

Note that even our anemic press admits that public opinion has shifted.  More evolution?  I certainly hope so.

Junk, stuff, things, baggage. . .

. . . whatever you call it, everybody's got it; and probably more of it than they need. And I mean actual, PHYSICAL junk and not the mental baggage we all carry, which will indeed be the topic of another blog at another time.

My wife and I just got rid of a lot of junk in the last two weekends and it really feels good. As each of our parents passed away, I vowed to myself that I did NOT want to leave a lot of stupid junk laying around so our children would have to sift through it, and as is so often the case, throw out most of it in the end. We both are taking that idea a little more seriously now. Of course it is also somewhat selfish on our part. The more we clean out now, the easier it is to find the things we actually need and everything is just so much neater.

Why does it seem that human nature has a tendency to collect, store, hoard, whatever you want to call it? Maybe after additional research in the field of evolution it will finally be revealed that we have not, after all, evolved from the apes (a prospect that troubles so many 'traditional' thinkers) but that we have indeed evolved from a much more noble creature - THE SQUIRREL!
