Sure . . .

. . . can be . . .

It’s a melancholy world
When you can’t tell
The stones from the pearls.
You can’t image what
My motives are
Or what I’m feeling.

But the lights are bright
On Broadway
As the birds begin to sing.
As America pours her first
Cup of coffee,
It’s a melancholy world.

It’s a melancholy world
Choosing between the
Big brass ring or the girl.
I just can’t seem to
Hold on to the dreams
I’ve worked so hard for.

But the crowd is there
At midnight
And the party’s just begun.
There’s a gold invitation
That bears my name
But it’s gotten lost in the mail.
It’s a melancholy world.

The mirror holds the
Same old dour reflection
That it used to.

But the sun will rise
In the morning,
And the stars will light the night.
If they just took the time;
Listened to my sad song.

The Bottom . . .

. . . of things. . .

(from The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass [new translation by Breon Mitchell])
". . . Gregor, though he made good money at the gunpowder mill, failed to provide even the bare necessities at home, but drank  everything away instead. While Gregor, taking after my great-grandmother no doubt, was a real drinker, my grandfather Joseph was a man who merely enjoyed a schnapps now and then. It wasn't sorrow that drove Gregor to drink. And even when he seemed cheerful, which was seldom enough, since he tended toward melancholy, he didn't drink because he was in high spirits. He drank because he was a thorough man who like to get to the bottom of things, including his liquor. As long as he lived, no one every saw Gregor Koljaiczek leave a half-full shot glass of Machandel gin standing. . . "

See . . .

. . . more . . .

Mine's a melancholy world
When you can't tell the sand from the pearls
You can't imagine what my motives are
Or where I'm going
But the world
Unclear to you
Keeps on turning
And the sun still rises each day
If you just separate
The wheat from the chaff
Change my melancholy world

All . . .

. . . of us. . .
. . . to our own degree . . .

". . . You cannot live in the world unless you can tolerate misfortune, and misfortune comes to us all; but misfortune easily runs out of control. While a simple cough is tolerable, "continual and inveterate causeth a consumption of the lungs; so doe these our Melancholy provocations." And (Robert) Burton identifies the very modern principle that everyone has a different level of tolerance for trauma, and that it is the interaction of the quantity of trauma and the level of tolerance that determines illness.  "For that which is but a flea-biting to one, causeth insufferable torment to another, & which one by his singular moderation, & well composed carriage can happily overcome, a second is no whit able to sustaine, but upon every small occasion of misconceived abuse, injurie, griefe, disgrace, losse, crosse, rumore &c yeelds so farre to passion, that his complexion is altered, his digestion hindered, his sleepe gone, his spirits obscured and his heart heavy . . . and he himselfe overcome with Melancholy . . . ". . . "

Heart, soul . . .

. . . warmth, grit, poetry. . . Mark McKay

But listen to what some others say. . .

"Surrealistic cowboy poetry. Springsteen on mescaline. Steve Earle on a literary jag. Wilco with grit. . . expansive, exotic Americana, urgent, whiskey-fed melodies topped with lyrics that often seem to consist of a string of vivid images and striking non sequiturs . . . "  - Jason Warburg , The Daily Vault

". . . punchy roots rock fit for prime time. In their incarnation on Hotel, some of these tracks displayed a raw beauty that tended toward sprawl. . . "  - Nick Zaino III , Paste magazine

". . . Combining many traditional American styles, including rock, bluegrass, country, and even a smidge of blues, Mark McKay, continues his style of mellow and melancholy acoustic (or acoustic-type) rock with heavy country influence . . . "  - Sarah Kantor , Emmie Magazine
