Sniveling . . .

Definition: often complaining or crying, in a way that is annoying; a sniveling little kid (not to mention dishonest, self-serving & unprincipled)

(from https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-saudi-arabia-bitch-gabbard-1226783?utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=NewsweekFacebookSF&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR2ksX7CSHwZxzxGnSBRIVXqsyLGB0JvE0TY-pz0oSJy3Zj45SzzAW3wMU8)
". . . "This is about 'America first.' (said Trump while commenting on his unwillingness to accept the CIA's contention that the Saudi royal family was involved in the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi) They're paying us $400 billion-plus to purchase and invest in our country," Trump said. . . He went on to claim that he has "no business whatsoever with Saudi Arabia." While the president may not own property there, Trump does have a long personal financial history with the Saudi government that equates to tens of millions of dollars. . . Those transactions from the Saudis to Trump include a $20 million 282-foot yacht and a stake in his Plaza Hotel in New York to a billionaire Saudi Prince in 1991, the 45th floor of the Trump World Tower in 2001 for $12 million and a $270,000 payment from a Saudi public relations firm after a trip to Trump’s D.C. hotel. . . Obviously . . .

. . .  one last, desperate gasp for breath before dying . . .

". . . the NRA posted a short membership-drive video along with a brief message.
"Stand and Fight for our Kids' Safety by Joining NRA," it said. "Today's protests aren't spontaneous. Gun-hating billionaires and Hollywood elites are manipulating and exploiting children as part of their plan to DESTROY the Second Amendment and strip us of our right to defend ourselves and our loved ones.". . . Smart . . .

. . . and trustworthy . . .

When I was a kid, I thought adults were smart and trustworthy.  Now that I'm an adult, I realize that kids are actually smart and trustworthy.

Some Kids . . .

. . . never grow up . . .

(from http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/trump-in-calvin-and-hobbes-comic-strips-is-frighteningly-accurate_us_5783bbc1e4b01edea78eb57a)
". . . You may have been following this year’s tumultuous election a bit on autopilot. And one could hardly blame you. But it’s hard to ignore Donald Trump, even though you/I/we desperately want to.  . . He reminds you of someone. You can’t quite put your finger on it. The loud, cocky attitude delivered with all the subtlety of a 6-year-old. Oh wow, Donald Trump is Calvin from “Calvin and Hobbes.”. . . "

Lesson. . .

. . . learned.

The kid who was incarcerated over an alleged threat on Facebook is now free thanks to an anonymous donor who posted his $500,000 bail.  The threat came during an argument about a video game when he claims to have 'sarcastically' said he was going to "shoot up a kindergarten."  He was jailed in February.

School violence and free speech came head to head as a result of the incident. In response to reporters, the young man said,   "I certainly would have thought a lot more about what I said and how permanent my writing -- and everyone's writing -- is (on the Internet).  People should be very, very careful of what they say. It's being recorded all the time, if you say it on any website, anywhere. And you can get in trouble for something that's not something you should get in trouble for. I just want people to be warned."

Lesson learned.

Lesson. . .

 . . . learned
When I was a kid, I had great respect for my elders.  I also had great respect for my contemporaries simply because that's what I was taught to do.  In fact, I may possibly have accorded more respect to many (old and young) than was actually necessary.  Not that I should have treated them badly.  It's just that I held some in much higher esteem than was warranted.

The older I got the more perspective I gained about sense, non-sense, bluster, honesty, empathy and integrity. I was, most certainly and understandably youth generally is, naive.  But I was also idealistic. I thought that a person could be taken at his word, and in that, I was wrong.  At least in some cases.

This lesson was driven home for me soon after college.  I had a temporary position at a local television station which I had hoped would become permanent.  My 'boss' in this position was one of the nicest, most honest, empathetic, sympathetic and virtuous individuals that I had (and have) ever met.  I believed that this is what a boss should be.  I also believed that this is what other bosses would be.  When the position failed to become permanent and I sought employment in another field, I quickly learned that my boss at the TV stations was a rare find, indeed.

The blessing and the curse. . .

. . . of aging is perspective. Although I choose to concentrate upon the blessing (and I use the term in purely secular fashion) aspect to be sure. That aspect was vividly, yet unexpectedly brought once again to my attention when pondering the talents and the moving music produced by Eric Dolphy.

In case you're not familiar with Eric Dolphy, he was a (chronologically) post-bop, jazz reed virtuoso, equally skilled and emotionally proficient on flute, alto saxophone and bass clarinet (which has, since my acquaintance with his music, become one of my favorite reed instruments). Born in 1928 in Los Angeles, he died in Berlin in June of 1964 of complications of a diabetic coma and sheer neglect. It seems the hospital staff, after Eric collapsed on stage, succumbing to the stereotypical view that all (or most) jazz musicians were drug addicts, left Eric in bed, unattended, to allow the alleged drugs to run their course. A brilliant, but tragically short, life.

My first exposure to Eric Dolphy is to the credit of my old school chum Bob Z., who had sometime around 1973 purchased an Eric Dolphy LP, which I cannot readily now identify due to record companies' haphazard practice of issuing unrelated and insufficiently documented recordings as an 'album', which contained mostly live material and a seminal performance of the old standard LAURA. The recording, now available as one of three "Live in Europe" CDs, still gives me goosebumps when I hear it.

The 'blessing' and the 'aging' to which I previously alluded come into play as follows. The pieces to which I was listening were recorded around 1960. I was hearing them in the early seventies. That means that music was made about thirteen years prior to my discovering it. In my innocent youthfulness, I perceived that mere 13 years as "A LONG TIME" ago. And the 36 years of age Eric had attained was really very young by most objective standards, but old to one of fifteen years.

Now, at fifty-three, listening to this glorious music and looking at photos of Eric Dolphy online, the apparent truth of the matter is that, when Eric passed away, he was only a kid. But what a BRILLIANT kid!

Another . . .

. . . snow. February's almost over. It should melt by the end of the week. So maybe it's not so bad.

The bear of it all though is, I have to get out of bed, shovel the stuff and get it all off the car. . . then
go to work just like it was ANY OTHER DAY!

Oh to be a kid again and only have to worry about where and when I'm gonna do my sledding today.
