a political agenda
". . . THE NEW Democratic majority House gaveled in [in January] with reform on its agenda — not so much of policy but of democracy itself. Admirably, the majority aims both to repair House rules and to improve the functioning of democratic institutions more broadly. Given the coarsening discourse and widening polarization, the challenge is immense. . . [H.R. 1 addresses] campaign financing, voting rights, election cybersecurity and more. . . [and] mandate[s] that political action committees report their donors. It would mend the big hole that the Supreme Court ripped in the Voting Rights Act, which had guaranteed access to the voting booth to generations of minority Americans. It would help states replace old election equipment, curb extreme partisan gerrymandering and encourage small-dollar campaign donations. . . None of this is a panacea. H.R. 1 will be dead on arrival in Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) Senate. . . But all are worthwhile first steps — toward persuading the Senate to accept some of the House’s ideas, tightening ethics standards and encouraging bipartisan groups to exert more pressure when House leaders suppress majority bills. Especially measured against the last House’s early drive to destroy Obamacare and recklessly cut taxes, this is a welcome beginning. . . "

". . . "I will say that never has there been a president - with few exceptions, in the case of FDR he had a major Depression to handle - who's passed more legislation, who's done more things than what we've done," President Donald Trump boasted on Monday morning, touting his executive orders, Supreme Court judge appointment, and rate of bill signing. "We've achieved tremendous success. I think we've been about as active as you can possibly be at a just about record-setting pace.". . .
But a stack of paper does not productivity make: As PolitiFact noted previously, "None of the bills Trump has signed into law are particularly significant.". . . Three of those bills were appointing three members to the Smithsonian's board, another approved a war memorial, a fifth promoted women in entrepreneurship, and a sixth encouraged the display of the American flag on Vietnam War Veterans Day. . . While their bill signings may trail Trump's, many of his predecessors won significant legislative achievements in their first 100 days. . . Obama signed an $800 billion stimulus. Bill Clinton inked the Family Medical Leave Act. Lyndon Johnson championed the stalled Civil Rights Act. John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps. . .A federal appeals court refused to reinstate his (Trump's) travel ban on residents of a group of Muslim-majority nations, dealing his second order barring certain travelers yet another legal blow. He's yet to fully repeal and replace Obamacare or secure funding from Mexico or Congress to begin any kind of meaningful border wall construction. . . . he's had little legislative action on the slew of vague plans he's released on issues like infrastructure and tax reform. . . Most of his agenda remains just that: Plans that have yet to be accomplished. . ."
Round every corner and fade into blue
The Angelus rings, she comes into view
Nine is her number
In nine she is due
She will never fail you
Singing creation, look into her eyes
Out of her mouth she is speaking the sky
Circling heaven, higher than high
She in time is movement
Why should I move from her world vibration?
Molding this clay into
Paleolithic Goddess Figurines
Streaming to rivers, she floats on the sea
Gathers her children who sit on her knee
Showing and telling them where they are free
She is softly speaking
Holding the line when she seems unpleasant
Molding this clay into
Paleolithic Goddess Figurines
There is no real dilemma
She has her own agenda
Though there's a vulture hovering above our heads
Go on and trust the pattern
Her sun and moon are lanterns
Painting the firmament with stars
She is the vision of attention engaged
Breaking the spell of automaton rage
A circuit of heaven, a luminous wave
All is seen before her
Why should I move from her world vibration?
Molding this clay into
Paleolithic Goddess Figurines
Round every corner and fade into blue
The Angelus rings, she comes into view
Nine is her number
In nine she is due
She will never fail you

. . . that the splendid job I was doing at my new place of employment merited no particular praise or attention but was simply the expected status quo. Trouble was, I could clearly see that status quo was not accomplished equitably. Not only was the level of accomplishment in the execution of the tasks at hand not as high as my own, but there were various and multiple agenda of certain individuals being skillfully carried out in addition management uneducated and inept yet power-hungry and self-preserving. Most of the above, as well, were carried out with the most scrupulous of hypocrisy.
My naive, childish perception of good humanity bubble had been burst.

**". . .The National Rifle Association's Wayne LaPierre railed Friday against "elites," whom he accused of harboring a secret agenda of creating a registry of gun owners across the country. . .
**. . .He ridiculed proponents of stricter gun controls, and won repeated cheers from the conservative activists in the audience for his defense of Second Amendment rights And LaPierre used his speech to slam a proposal before Congress to require background checks for all firearms transactions, a law that has won some new support in the wake of the deadly December shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.. . .
**. . . LaPierre said the background checks would set the stage for universal gun registration. . .
**. . ."It's the real goal they've been pushing for decades," he said. . .
**. . . And he stoked fears that universal background checks would lead to newspapers publishing the names and addresses of gun owners, so that "gangs and criminals" or the Mexican and Chinese governments could access them. . . "

Methinks I detect a tinge of paranoia. . .
by Wayne LaPierre, NRA Executive Vice President
". . . If you want a glimpse of a genuine nightmare for America, just look at what’s headed our way.
But unlike a nightmare, this isn’t some
fantasy. It’s a very real, very dangerous conspiracy of public deception
intended to destroy your Right to Keep and Bear Arms. It’s targeted
directly at you.
And it’ll succeed unless you recognize it, understand it, and take action now to stop it.
The best way you could do so is by carrying
your new 2012 membership card (see sidebar story on page 29) in your
wallet as a symbol of your commitment—and by renewing or upgrading your
NRA membership or making a contribution to defending freedom today.
But first, let me give you the facts,
evidence, congressional testimony and documented words and deeds that
reveal the frightening but irrefutable truth about this sinister plot.
Over the past three years, the Obama
administration and its anti-gun allies have been engaged in a silent but
sophisticated long-term conspiracy to:
1. Neutralize gun owners and NRA voters as a political force in national elections, and thereby:
2. Win re-election to a second
term in the White House, where they then will be immune to the will of
voters and free to continue consolidating and misusing their
ever-increasing power to:
3. Prosecute a full-scale,
sustained, all-out campaign to excise the Second Amendment from our Bill
of Rights through legislation, litigation, regulation, executive
orders, judicial fiat, international treaties—in short, all the levers
of power of all three branches of government.
And the key to their success lies in keeping gun owners like you in the dark. . . "
from Shopes.com ". . . look at some of the rhetoric and how it squares with the facts, while offering some broader context to inform the debate.
Rep. Louie Gohmert said that “every time … conceal-carry [gun laws]
have been allowed the crime rate has gone down.” But that is far from a
settled issue in academia.
Dan Gross, head of the Brady Campaign used the number of daily gun
murders as proof that “gun violence rates are not” going down. But the
rate of gun murder is at its lowest point since at least 1981: 3.6 per
100,000 people in 2010. The high point was 7 in 1993. However, non-fatal
gun injuries from assaults increased last year for the third straight
year, and that rate is the highest since 2008.
Federal data also show violent crimes committed with guns —
including murders, aggravated assaults and robberies — have declined
for three straight years.
Rep. Donna Edwards said that “since Columbine, there have been 181
of these school shootings.” That’s an inflated figure. She used a list
of “major school shootings” supplied by the Brady Campaign that included
incidents that were neither shootings nor at schools. By our count, the
list shows 130 school shootings since Columbine that resulted in at
least one student or school official being killed or injured — still
unacceptably high, but about a quarter fewer than claimed.
Here are some other facts. The United States has the highest rate of
gun ownership in the world — by far. And it has the highest rate of
homicides among advanced countries. . . "
Do we want to evolve into better human beings or are we just CRAZY???. . .

. . . of aging is perspective. Although I choose to concentrate upon the blessing (and I use the term in purely secular fashion) aspect to be sure. That aspect was vividly, yet unexpectedly brought once again to my attention when pondering the talents and the moving music produced by Eric Dolphy.
In case you're not familiar with Eric Dolphy, he was a (chronologically) post-bop, jazz reed virtuoso, equally skilled and emotionally proficient on flute, alto saxophone and bass clarinet (which has, since my acquaintance with his music, become one of my favorite reed instruments). Born in 1928 in Los Angeles, he died in Berlin in June of 1964 of complications of a diabetic coma and sheer neglect. It seems the hospital staff, after Eric collapsed on stage, succumbing to the stereotypical view that all (or most) jazz musicians were drug addicts, left Eric in bed, unattended, to allow the alleged drugs to run their course. A brilliant, but tragically short, life.
My first exposure to Eric Dolphy is to the credit of my old school chum Bob Z., who had sometime around 1973 purchased an Eric Dolphy LP, which I cannot readily now identify due to record companies' haphazard practice of issuing unrelated and insufficiently documented recordings as an 'album', which contained mostly live material and a seminal performance of the old standard LAURA. The recording, now available as one of three "Live in Europe" CDs, still gives me goosebumps when I hear it.
The 'blessing' and the 'aging' to which I previously alluded come into play as follows. The pieces to which I was listening were recorded around 1960. I was hearing them in the early seventies. That means that music was made about thirteen years prior to my discovering it. In my innocent youthfulness, I perceived that mere 13 years as "A LONG TIME" ago. And the 36 years of age Eric had attained was really very young by most objective standards, but old to one of fifteen years.
Now, at fifty-three, listening to this glorious music and looking at photos of Eric Dolphy online, the apparent truth of the matter is that, when Eric passed away, he was only a kid. But what a BRILLIANT kid!

. . . my conviction that truth is really so much stranger than fiction. Is that the way it ought to be ? It's not my eyes that do the seeking. Even a blind man sees agenda we're keeping. Is that the way it ought to be? I never thought I'd be looking behind like I do. Not quite sure just what I'll see. But I'm rarely surprised by the antics of many; surprised by the antics of few.
It's one thing that they never mentioned. Back in my school was only so much convention. Is that the way it ought to be? And now we find it's what we're teaching. We're all conditioned. See the numbers we're reaching? Is that the way it ought to be? How can we say there's a god in his heaven above watching, directing with love? And while on bended knee, we proceed to make judgement on things that we don't like to see.
It's fast becoming my conviction that truth is really so much stranger than ficion.
