Scorecard Update . . .

5.  With No Evidence, Trump Claims 'Millions' Voted Illegally

(from https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/11/27/trumps-bogus-claim-that-millions-of-people-voted-illegally-for-hillary-clinton/)
". . . This is a bogus claim with no documented proof. . . Snopes.com and PundiFact have already examined this claim, back when it was hot in the right-wing blogosphere, not a statement made by a future U.S. president. The whole thing started with a few tweets by Gregg Phillips, a self-described conservative voter fraud specialist. . . These claims were then picked up by such purveyors of false facts as Infowars.com, a conspiracy-minded website that, among other things, claims that no one actually died in a massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. One article described Phillips as being affiliated with VoterFraud.org but in reality he says he is the founder of VoteStand.com, supposedly an app that detects vote fraud. Phillips also has claimed that Obamacare is the “biggest voter registration fraud scheme in the history of the world” because it provided opportunities for voter registration. . ."

Once. . .

. . . upon a time . . .

(from OHO's Jay Graboski via Facebook 11/5/15)
". . . Today, 11/06/15: Off to Bill Pratt's Woodlawn production studio (The Bratt) to collate the score of tunes intended to grace our forthcoming compilation of tunes about Maryland (& related topics) by local musicians/bands (The MD/CD). These will be then handed over to engineer/producer/author Tyree Ford for mastering. When I get this finished master back, then begins the arduous task of (for me) securing licenses authorizing the use of 5 of the 6 cover songs ("Baltimore," "Barefoot in Baltimore," "Raining in Baltimore," "The Streets of Baltimore" & "The Lady Came From Baltimore") as well as assembling the credits; then (for David Pugh) creating an attractive graphic package. Is that "Ode to Baltimore" somewhere in this compendium? Time will be the wiser. . "

Magic . . .

. . . was in the air. . .

. . . last Friday at Bread & Circuses Bistro's Patio in Towson. The clouds parted, the sun burst gloriously through.  Three mysterious men with musical instruments plowed through three sets of driving, sophisticated and danceable cover tunes interspersed with thought-provoking originals well into the evening. . . all of which seemed to simply appear. . .

. . .Out of Thin Air

When I woke up today I had all that I want
Everything that I did brought desired results
How could this be? All the rules have been changed
In the pool where I drowned I am swimming again.

But of course I am wrong.  How could I understand
When my society tells me how tall I stand?
Then I take it inside and wait for life’s kiss
Which is sure to arrive ‘cause I’m riding my bliss.

What did I do? The world holds me up
Invisible hands grant the nourishing cup
Have I found a way that has always been there?
It seems to me it came out of thin air.

The child waking up brings the old crone to tears
Pushing through my disguise see the tips of my ears
How could this be all the rules have been changed
In the pool where I drowned I am swimming again.

When I blindly reach out to what I cannot see
Grace reappears and it rescues me
I’m not what I feel, I’m not what you think
I’m only what is and what isn’t in sync.

Pow! . . .

 . . . Wow!!!. . .

(with all respect to my native American friends)

Watching 'friends' bicker about guns on my facebook page. (Kinda funny really.) Hopefully they'll never be personally close enough to each other for any actual shooting to occur.

The new MySpace is very weird.  I can't figure it out . . . I'll give it a few more tries.

Getting psyched for Oho's appearance at Schlongtasm 30.  (No, it's not a pornographic thing.)  It's Dan (The Schlong) Long's (of Airaid Records)30th birthday celebration at Joe Squared Pizza on Friday, January 25th.  More on that later.  Brushing up on our tunes.

Couldn't have been gloomier weather here in the 'Big Banana' (as my friend Frank used to call it).

Trying to cope maturely with my SAD.  It's cold, mostly gray and not very motivating this time of year.  But I try to remain GLAD in spite of it.

No better way to stay gainfully occupied that with . . . MUSIC!!!. . . .

Tonight's headliner. . .

. . . at Brewer’s Alley Songwriters’ Showcase. . .

Tony Denikos, (pronounced "Deh-nigh-kiss"), writes, records and performs some of the most refreshingly down-home Americana music in the country.  A native of Laurel, MD, Tony's wide range of influences include artists such as John Fogerty, John Prine, Lowell George, Graham Parker & Bruce Spingsteen

Tony recently released his third CD Already Gone (2009). It immediately charted at #2 on the Euro Americana Charts and at #7 on the Freeform American Roots Chart.  Already Gone is a collection of 11 distinctive tunes that explore the entire spectrum of Americana music. This CD is full of cutting lyrical wit, breathtakingly personal storytelling and foot stomping backbeats. There are stories here that everyone can relate to about love, working class attitudes, hope, regret, forgotten patriots and unwitting heroes.  Fans of roots guitar and fine musicianship will appreciate the world class cast of players, including:  drummer Timm Beiry (Nils Lofgren, Danny Gatton); bassists Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam) and Dave Jacques (John Prine, Emmylou Harris); keyboardist Phil Madeira (Emmylou Harris); and, guitarists Gantt Kushner and Warner E. Hodges (Jason and the Scorchers).

You can catch Tony performing his songs at venues and festivals from New York to the Carolinas including venues such as Rams Head on Stage ,the Maryland Seafood Festival, Columbia Festival of the Arts, the Vintage Virginia Wine Festival and many others.  He performs solo or with a band - always presenting to the listening world a writing style and performance uniquely his own.  His songs will stay with you long after the lights fade to black....

Talk about 'Gonzo'. . .

. . . sixty four years ago this month a little-known eccentric, introverted pianist walked into the young Blue Note record label's New York studios to make his first solo recordings.

Thelonious Monk may not have been officially or popularly described as 'Gonzo', but what better descriptive to convey the esoteric, cerebral, attractive and (some say) sexy music that he conceived and performed. Monk and Duke Ellington hold the distinction of being the 'most recorded' of jazz composers. Ellington's compositions numbered about 1,000. Monk wrote 70 tunes. Truly an original, even the beret and sunglasses of the beboppers' wardrobe were originated by Monk.

From Wikipedia. . . "At the time of his signing to Riverside, Monk was highly regarded by his peers and by some critics, but his records did not sell in significant numbers, and his music was still regarded as too "difficult" for mass-market acceptance. Indeed, with Monk's consent, Riverside had managed to buy out his previous Prestige contract for a mere $108.24. He willingly recorded two albums of jazz standards as a means of increasing his profile. The first of these, Thelonious Monk Plays the Music of Duke Ellington, featuring bass innovator Oscar Pettiford and drummer Kenny Clarke, included Ellington pieces "Caravan" and "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)".

On the 1956 LP Brilliant Corners, Monk recorded his own music. The complex title track, which featured tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, was so difficult to play that the final version had to be edited together from multiple takes. The album, however, was largely regarded as the first success for Monk; according to Orrin Keepnews, "It was the first that made a real splash.""

Monk was one of my original portals into bebop and jazz. The reason, I now think after many years of additional perspective, that his music compelled me so, was what I perceived to be its similarity to much of the progressive, 'art' rock in which I was so interested at the time, with it's unusual angles, unique accents, unbounded energy, incessant rhythm and sheer magnetism. Truly great music.
