Friends . . .

Time takes its toll
Brings some bad with some good
Wear and tear; aging; fading;
Wisdom, knowledge withstood

One single, however,
Most joyful affair
Is when good friends unite
Sparking magical flare

Magic . . .

. . . and the tremendous power that it holds will never be fully explained nor understood . . .

(from http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/power-of-music)
“Where words leave off, music begins.”
― Heinrich Heine

“Ah, music," he said, wiping his eyes. "A magic beyond all we do here!”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

“Music has always been a matter of Energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.”
― Hunter S. Thompson

“Music is the universal language of mankind.”
― Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“Where words fail, music speaks.”
― Hans Christian Andersen

“Who hears music, feels his solitude
Peopled at once.”
― Robert Browning, The complete poetical works of Browning

“I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.”
― Tom Waits

“Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence.”
― Robert Fripp

"Even when involving an extremely unhappy topic, or originating from a most unlikely source, or presenting a disagreeable or plainly untrue thesis, music can still move me."

Bad . . .

. . . bedtime story . . .

Once upon a time a 'well-loved' Princess, seeking to the the Princess-in-charge of all the Land, fell afoul of 'those-who-would-quash-her-dream' and as a result, almost lost her chance to attain her diligently-sought title. It seems that in her past capacity as Princess of State, she exhibited some disregard for the principles one would expect from a respectable Princess of State. One such situation, of which many said there were numerous, involved a Squire who generously contributed to a foundation of which the Prince (her husband, you see) was in charge. As a reward for his kindly supporting her husband's cause, it appeared that he was to be rewarded with a position on the Inter-Land Security Advisory Board (ISAB) even though had not one white of knowledge or experience in the things that were done by the ISAB-namely . In fact, his only experience involved providing advice to the rulers of the Land on the use of tactical nuclear weapons and on other crucial arms control issues. When ABC News of the Land inquired of the Princess' staff the reason for the Squire's name being placed on such a list at all, the Princess' staff stalled the reporters and offered no explanation. Then, 'Mysteriously' on the very next day, the Squire, without explanation one, resigned his new post. ABC News of the Land later addressed the Squire directly about the incident.  He became upset and had security threaten the ABC News of the Land reporter with arrest, much the same as the Prince and Princess themselves would most likely have done under similar circumstances. Needless to say, they all lived happily ever after.

Glad . . .

. . . you asked . . .

(from The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, translation by John E. Woods)
". . . James (in the course of the meal) had asked him out of the blue what happened, exactly, when a body decayed - . . . "First of all, your guts burst," the director replied, propping his elbows on the table and leaning forward over his folded hands. "There you are lying on your wood shavings and sawdust, and the gases, you see, swell you up, blow you up until you're immense, the way frogs look when naughty boys blow air into them, until you're a regular balloon, and then your abdomen can no longer take the pressure and bursts. Bang! You relieve yourself noticeably -- the same thing happens to you that happened to Judas Iscariot when he fell headlong from the bough -- your bowels gush out. Yes, and after that you're actually socially acceptable again. If granted a holiday, you could visit your heirs without causing much offense. You stink yourself out, so to speak. And if you were to go for a stroll, you'd be quite a fine fellow, much like the citizens of Palermo who are hung up in the Capuchin catacombs near the Porta Nuova. There they hang dry and elegant, enjoying universal respect. All you have to do first is stink yourself out."

"To be sure," the consul said. "Much obliged." And the next morning he vanished. . . "

Multi . . .

. . . tasking . . .

(from The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, translated by John E. Woods)
". . . he (Dr. Behrens, Director of the Bergdorf Sanatorium) could simultaneously listen to a patient's interior, talk about something else, and dictate what he had heard to his assistant. . . "Yes, yes, gentlemen, the damn libido," he said. "The whole affair is great sport for you, of course -  it doesn't matter to you. Vesicular.  But the direcdtor of a sanatorium gets a noseful, believe you - muffled -believe you me.  Can I help it if phthisis is accompanied by increased concupiscence?  Slight roughness?  I didn't arrange things this way, but before you know what's happened you're running a cathouse.  Diminished under the left shoulder. We provide analysis, a chance to talk things out - and a hell of a lot of good it does.  The more the rhonchial pack talks things out the more lecherous they become.  I advocate mathematics.  Better here, the old sound is gone. Keeping oneself occupied with mathematics, I say, is the best medicine for cupidity.  Prosecutor Paravant, who was severely afflicted, threw himself into math - he's busy squaring the circle these days and it has greatly eased his problem.  But most of them are too full-witted or too lazy for that, God help them.  Vesicular. You see, I'm quite aware that young folks go to the dogs all too easily here, and I used to attempt to take occasional measure against their debauchery.  But then one day some lad or lover looked me straight in the eye and asked what business it was of mine. And since then I've been only a doctor. Weak rattling, top right.". . . "

Or Not . . .

When they first met
There was no magic
Yet there was something in the air
Drawn to each other
Like there was no tomorrow
Because of something yesterday

Now he wants to be what she wants him to be
He wants to be what she wants him to be
With no regard about the man she really sees
Like living in the past
Contracting some disease

One little girl
Without a care or worry
Who had the world at her command
Found without warning
Someone she lost one morning
Was so much more than just a man

Now he wants to be what she wants him to be
He wants to be what she wants him to be
With no regard about the man she really sees
Like living in the past
Contracting some disease

I never ceases to amaze
The things that motivate us
To some lofty height or to the deepest depth
But if the timing's right
You walk into the room just when
They need another volunteer to save the wreck

Are there regrets
Will there be second guessing
About the way this thing was handled
Are they content
And would they ever tell me
As if I really need to know

Now he wants to be what she wants him to be
He wants to be what she wants him to be
With no regard about the man she really sees
Like living in the past
Contracting some disease

A Warm August Night . . .

Ghosts are in the air, they're not visible
but they're there in Frederick on a warm August night
History hides in the cracks of every edifice
in fact, in Frederick on a warm August night

There's magic everywhere, no dazzling tricks
but you won't care in Frederick on a warm August night
Many patriots, crooks and good citizens too,
I've read in books, have been through Frederick on a warm August night

You'll find emotions deep inside those places that you
thought were so good to hide;  Frederick on a warm August night
Come flowing through a tear or smile given birth
by artistry of depth and mirth; Frederick on a warm August night

The City . . .

At first, the mere height of the buildings and the ambience those buildings created, as contrasted with green (not rural-lush) flat, expansive suburbs, was the most impressive feature of the city to my eyes.  Granted, I lived no more than two blocks away from the city line, but this was ‘downtown’;  the heart of the big city;  the center of both cultural and business activities as well as (and it really is, these days, a business) medical and health professionals.  The latter was precisely what brought me to the city on one of the earliest trips I took there in memory.  It was a doctor visit for my mother, or my father (I can’t remember precisely which) although my feeble recollection does place my mother more prominently in the picture. It had then, as it does now, its own very specific aroma, look and feel which is both grimy and exotic at the same time.  The very same attractively fascinating allure continued to taunt me many years later when my first ‘legit’, full-time employment was taken at a prominent, downtown location and I found myself spending increasingly larger amounts of time there.
Although I have spent the preponderance of my professional life making my livelihood in the city, I realized this very day, just how much of that original allure still has a hold upon me.  The city has changed drastically in many areas in the interim, but just enough historical architecture remains to flood the mind and body with the thoughts and stimulations that I first experienced more than half a lifetime ago. I don’t often stop to contemplate it, as we fail to do with regards to most things we experience on a routine basis, but I find that ‘downtown’ still possesses a magical yet elusive quality that can both attract and appall at either separate or the very same time. These mysterious but desirable qualities do, and will always to my mind, make it a truly wonderful place.

Magic . . .

. . . was in the air. . .

. . . last Friday at Bread & Circuses Bistro's Patio in Towson. The clouds parted, the sun burst gloriously through.  Three mysterious men with musical instruments plowed through three sets of driving, sophisticated and danceable cover tunes interspersed with thought-provoking originals well into the evening. . . all of which seemed to simply appear. . .

. . .Out of Thin Air

When I woke up today I had all that I want
Everything that I did brought desired results
How could this be? All the rules have been changed
In the pool where I drowned I am swimming again.

But of course I am wrong.  How could I understand
When my society tells me how tall I stand?
Then I take it inside and wait for life’s kiss
Which is sure to arrive ‘cause I’m riding my bliss.

What did I do? The world holds me up
Invisible hands grant the nourishing cup
Have I found a way that has always been there?
It seems to me it came out of thin air.

The child waking up brings the old crone to tears
Pushing through my disguise see the tips of my ears
How could this be all the rules have been changed
In the pool where I drowned I am swimming again.

When I blindly reach out to what I cannot see
Grace reappears and it rescues me
I’m not what I feel, I’m not what you think
I’m only what is and what isn’t in sync.

Orange. . .

 . . . crate. . .

(from wikipedia.com)
". . . Between 1992 and 1995, (Van Dyke) Parks teamed up again with a then-reclusive Brian Wilson to create the album Orange Crate Art. Parks wrote all of the songs on the album, except "This Town Goes Down At Sunset" and George Gershwin instrumental "Lullaby", with vocals by Wilson. Orange Crate Art is a tribute to the Southern California of the early 1900s, and a lyrical tribute to the beauty of Northern California. It was recorded during a stressful period for Wilson, after being involved in court orders relating to years of psychiatric misconduct he had been subject to. According to Parks, "When I found him, he was alone in a room staring at a television. It was off." The album was met with poor commercial reception, much to the disappointment of Parks. . . "
