More Lying . . .

(from http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/even-iraq-trump-cant-bring-himself-tell-the-troops-the-truth?cid=sm_fb_maddow&fbclid=IwAR2M2ILJV7xVfBWY5CBMshrG2H5P6Hy4cUdAX998g1xjuYF1A8-82AiirNI)
". . . as part of his pitch, Trump repeated a claim he must know isn’t true. . . “You just saw that because you just got one of the biggest pay raises you’ve ever received. . . It’s great. You know what? Nobody deserves it more. You haven’t gotten one in more than 10 years – more than 10 years. And we got you a big one. I got you a big one. I got you a big one. . .“They had plenty of people that came up. They said, ‘You know, we could make it smaller. We could make it 3 percent. We could make it 2 percent. We could make it 4 percent.’ I said, ‘No. Make it 10 percent. Make it more than 10 percent.’ Because it’s been a long time. It’s been more than 10 years. It’s been more than 10 years. That’s a long time. And, you know, you really put yourselves out there, and you put your lives out there. So congratulations.”. . . It’s one thing for the president to peddle this lie at pre-election campaign rallies, but it’s worse when he travels halfway around the world to lie to the troops’ faces. . ."

". . . The White House also said in a statement that the U.S. "has defeated the territorial caliphate.". . . Trump then doubled down on those claims in a video message Wednesday evening, saying that the U.S. has "won against ISIS.". . . “We’ve beaten them and we’ve beaten them badly. We’ve taken back the land and now it’s time for our troops to come back home," he said. . . "

Money. . .

The radio is rambling on about Syria with mention of car bombs, Assad, opposition, terrorists, negotiators etc., very sad indeed.  The umpteenth snowstorm is coating the complete pre-spring landscape and once again, complicating a morning commute.  The president has spoken with high schoolers about going to college and how they're going to pay for it. Mere distractions to be sure.

But once again, prompted by the dinner conversation last night, distribution of wealth sneaked into the mix.  The angle this time was not the greed of Wall Street or big business.  This time we zeroed in on the entertainment industry.  Not only the vast amounts of money required to make a major-release motion picture, but also the salaries commanded by professional sports players.  See . . .

". . . For the first time since SI.com began publishing the Fortunate 50 in 2004, Tiger Woods is not No. 1. He's not even No. 2. That honor goes once again to Phil Mickelson. The new No. 1 (for now) is Floyd Mayweather, who was unranked a year ago but scored two huge pay-per-view paydays to earn $85 million without a single endorsement.

This year's list is unique for a couple more reasons. NBA players, who have historically claimed more spots in the Fortunate 50 than any other group, had their salaries slashed by nearly 20 percent this season because of the 66-game schedule brought on by the lockout of 2011.
Our findings consisted solely of salary, winnings, bonuses, endorsements and appearance fees. We consulted players' associations, tour records, agents and news reports. Our endorsement estimates for 2012 came from Burns Entertainment & Sports Marketing, other sports-marketing executives and analysts, and agents. Salary figures were based on current or most recently completed seasons (July 1 for the NFL, which is why Drew Brees, who just signed a $100 million deal last Friday, isn't on the list). For winnings-based sports (auto racing, golf, tennis), we used the 2011 calendar year. Boxing purses are from June 2011 through May 2012. Candidates for the U.S. 50 had to be American citizens and currently active in their sports.

Dear Senator. . .

. . . Mikulski,
I have chosen "Other" as my message topic because you list neither Syria nor War.  Your list does include "Defense" but nowhere do I see "Offense."

Writing to tell you that after my letter to you, pleading to disapprove of any military action against Syria, I just heard on the radio that you support the President's plan for military action.

I know you can't act based solely upon my advice, but after hearing that the majority of the U.S. population is against such military action in Syria, I can't help but think that you are ignoring the wishes of your constituents.

Can you please respond to this and provide an honest accounting of the opinions that you have received from the people you represent in the state of Maryland?

Thank you and best regards,
Raymond M. Jozwiak

More. . .

 . . . from the "IS THIS NEWS?" department. . .

(By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News)
Deriding President Barack Obama as the weakest president "in my adult lifetime," former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called on the White House on Tuesday to fish or cut bait in Syria.

Rumsfeld said there could be no middle ground in Syria: "You either ought to change the regime, or you ought to do nothing," he said during a question-and-answer session after a lecture at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Mich.

In his customarily colorful way, Rumsfeld, 81, picked away at Obama for declaring last week that any U.S. response to Syria's alleged use of chemical weapons against its own people wouldn't target President Bashar Assad.

"Why would you go in and fire a shot across the bow?" asked Rumsfeld, who served as Ford's defense secretary during the 1970s and again as head of President George W. Bush's Pentagon during the planning for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the early 2000s.

"All it does is make a splash, and ... what you've probably achieved is the embarrassment of the United States for being feckless and ineffective," he said.

Rumsfeld also accused Obama of cutting Secretary of State John Kerry off at the knees after Kerry made a "compelling and persuasive" case for strong military action in Syria last week — only for Obama to later say any U.S. response in Syria would be a "limited, narrow act."

"The president is not, in my view, providing the kind of leadership that I think almost any president in my adult lifetime would be providing," he said.

"You have to have a vision, Rumsfeld said. "You have to know what you're going to do, and you have to provide the kind of leadership the commander in chief would provide."

Despite all of his statements, when asked what guidance he would give on the Syrian situation, however, Rumsfeld did admit, "I'm glad I don't have to give advice to be honest with you."

Thank. . .

. . . goodness
. . . or at least the president. . .

President Barack Obama says the international community must first agree that chemical weapons were used by the Syrian regime. The U.S. will NOT act unilaterally and Obama says there must be an international consensus on whether President Bashar al-Assad's regime used chemical weapons. In other words, the chance of U.S. military involvement is now more remote. We may, however, be providing the formerly refused arms to rebels in the near future.

There exists very little interest among NATO members for military intervention in Syria. The president said, ". . . I've got to make sure I've got the facts."

Problem is that many of the rebels battling Damascus are allied with Islamic extremists. And Obama wants to avoid one more conflict after winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The public doesn't appear to want that either according to some recent news organization polls.
