(A survey of) ". . .3,042 Dutch male workers . . . asked about their personal situations, how many hours they worked and how many hours they thought their peers worked on average. Men who thought they worked fewer hours than their counterparts were found to be less happy than those who thought they worked more, regardless of their working time or income. According to the report's authors, this phenomenon, called "conspicuous work," occurs when "the individual derives status from working more than his peers, which increases his utility." The report states: "In many social groups, an individual can indeed increase his status by telling everyone that he is very busy, preferably even more than others around him. Symmetrically, he can lose status if he has less to do than others." Apparently this phenomenon only affects men. Marion Collewet, one of the report's authors, told CNBC by email: "The patterns of conspicuous work which we identify for male workers cannot be found for female workers in our data.". . ."

A full 5 percent of folks have checked Facebook during lovemaking, a new survey finds.

I'm not sure if I should be disturbed or impressed by such an apparent mastery of multitasking. If this is what Mark Zuckerberg had in mind when constructing Facebook and his vision of a world where everything is shared, I definitely would never have accepted all those friend requests from family members.

Of course, checking status updates and tapping on chatheads is the least of today's mid-coital distractions, according to the survey conducted in the UK for condom maker Durex by OnePoll, which did not share its methodology or the sample size used. It also found that 12 percent had answered a phone call during sex and 10 percent had read a text in the midst of the act.

I don't consider myself a guru in the fields of either sex or social media, but I am confident enough to say that combining the two probably means you're doing one of them wrong.

While the Durex study seems to be far from scientific, it does reflect a trend. A more formal national study found young Britons having less sex today than in the past, with social media perhaps partly to blame.

For its part, Durex is going all John and Yoko-style on the problem by encouraging everyone to spend the hour between 8:30 and 9:30 in bed on March 29 without any lights on, including those that emanate from the screens of our favorite devices.

It's a romantic notion and an interesting way to sell more condoms, but more importantly, it's a way to at least temporarily reduce the volume of selfies that no one else should ever have to look at.

Montesquieu remarked that if a great city or a great state should fall as the result of a apparent "accident," then there would be a general reason why it required only an accident to make it fall.  This may appear to be a tautology, but it actually holds up very well as a means of analyzing what we lazily refer to as a "sex scandal."

If a rust-free zipper were enough on its own to cripple a politician, then quite clearly Bill Clinton would be remembered, if at all, as a mediocre Governor of the Great State of Arkansas. It is therefore silly to describe the present unseemly furor as a prurient outburst over one man's apparently self-destructive sexual compulsions. 

Until recently, this same man was fairly successfully fighting a delaying action against two long-standing complaints.  The first was that he had imported unsavory practitioners like the disgraced Webster Hubbell.  The second was that he viewed stray women employees as spoils along the trail. . .

. . . Had Clinton begun by saying:  "Yes, I did love Gennifer, but that's my business," many of us would have rejoiced and defended him.  Instead, he disowned and insulted her and said he'd been innocent of that adultery, and treated the voters as if they were saps.  Having apparently put Ms. Lewinsky into the quick-fix world of Jordan and Morris, he is in no position to claim that it's a private emotional matter, and has no right to confuse his business with that of the country's. Which is why he has a scandal on "his" hands, and is also why we need feel no pang when he falsely claims that the press and public are wasting his valuable time, when the truth is exactly the other way about."

Ah, What A Week . . .

". . .A Florida woman stabbed her boyfriend in the eye with a knife after he refused to have sex with her and another woman she had brought home from a local club, authorities said.

The late September incident occurred after La Crystal King-Woolfork, 28, came home from a spot called Shake Your Booty Club with another woman at about 4 a.m. The two women had sex, and then King-Woolfork asked her boyfriend to participate, according to an Indian River Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

When he refused, the intoxicated King-Woolfork “became very angry and grabbed a knife,” the boyfriend told authorities.

The two struggled until the man was able to take the knife from King-Woolfork and hide it between the mattresses of the bed, according to deputies.

He left the house and called for a ride to the hospital, the report said. She was arrested on an attempted murder charge on Sept. 26 after police spoke to her boyfriend.

When police spoke to King-Woolfork, she said confirmed that she brought the woman home to have sex and wanted her boyfriend to join.

When the other woman left, and her boyfriend was in bed, King-Woolfork said she “picked up a knife off the dresser because she knew (her boyfriend) was going to get mad,” the arrest report said. She said her then boyfriend took her hand to take the knife and the two struggled, which cut her knee, the report said.

The fight escalated and she hit her boyfriend in the head with her cell phone, King-Woolfork said.

She denied stabbing him but said she had hit him in the face several times with a metal candle holder, according to deputies. Then he punched her in the nose, the report said.

It wasn’t immediately known if she had an attorney. . ."

Ask a woman who has dared reveal her number to someone who considers it too high, and she’ll surely tell you a story of being “slut-shamed.”

It’s quite common for a guy to worry about a girlfriend’s sexual past. Too many men are still raised to see sex as crude competition, in which bedding a woman who has already had a lot of lovers counts less than scoring with a woman who is “hard to get.” But I think the average guy’s worry is simpler than that. The more men his girlfriend has slept with, the greater number of lovers to which she can compare his skills. . . "
