". . . Starting in December, the likeness of former Vice President Dick Cheney will grace the U.S. Capitol, in accordance with a Senate tradition honoring former vice president. The Huffington Post was tipped off by a Senate resolution "authorizing the use of Emancipation Hall in the Capitol Visitor Center for the unveiling of the marble bust of Vice President Richard Cheney on December 3, 2015." The resolution, not yet officially introduced, was confirmed by the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Wednesday. Cheney, vice president during George W. Bush's two terms, left office in 2009 with a 13 percent approval rating. As part of the vice presidency, Cheney served as president of the Senate, and it's traditional for the Senate to honor former vice presidents with busts of them in the Capitol. In 1898, the Senate passed a resolution establishing the practice.
Marble busts of those who have been Vice Presidents of the United States shall be placed in the Senate wing of the Capitol from time to time, [and] that the Architect of the Capitol is authorized, subject to the advice and approval of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, to carry into execution the object of this resolution. . ."

(A survey of) ". . .3,042 Dutch male workers . . . asked about their personal situations, how many hours they worked and how many hours they thought their peers worked on average. Men who thought they worked fewer hours than their counterparts were found to be less happy than those who thought they worked more, regardless of their working time or income. According to the report's authors, this phenomenon, called "conspicuous work," occurs when "the individual derives status from working more than his peers, which increases his utility." The report states: "In many social groups, an individual can indeed increase his status by telling everyone that he is very busy, preferably even more than others around him. Symmetrically, he can lose status if he has less to do than others." Apparently this phenomenon only affects men. Marion Collewet, one of the report's authors, told CNBC by email: "The patterns of conspicuous work which we identify for male workers cannot be found for female workers in our data.". . ."

The NFL made $10.5 billion in 2013 and paid its chief executive Roger Goodell $44.2 million. Taxes? The National Football League pays taxes through its various money-making offshoots such as NFL Properties and NFL Ventures. The league office in midtown Manhattan, which paid Goodell pays non. Why?  Because in 1942 the IRS ruled the NFL was a trade association (for its current 32-member teams) and therefore exempt from taxes as a nonprofit under section 501(c)6 of the tax code. In 1966, when two powerful Louisiana politicians, Sen. Russell Long and Rep. Taker or Giver? . . .

Pondering awards, rewards and recognition in a number of life situations. . .

The (real) Musician:  Enjoys awards and recognition and the truly savvy among them exploits the promotional value these awards and recognition provide.  He (or she) will however, continuously perpetuate the making of music for as long as their own organism continues the process of breathing most importantly because that's just about all that they CAN DO!

We are always asking questions, even when we're not. A new study suggests that "uptalk," phrasing your statements with a rise in pitch at the end, isn't just something young women do: it seems to be expanding to other demographics, including young men.

In Southern California, anyway, young people tend to uptalk no matter their gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, suggests a small new study presented last week at the Acoustical Society of America’s annual meeting.

. . . Uptalk serves several purposes in the speech of SoCal speakers. . . Here's an everyday example: When the barista at Starbucks asks for the customer's name, an uptalker almost sounds like he or she is guessing at the answer (Mike? Isabelle?), "even though we know that this person is not actually questioning his or her name,” the authors write.

Ritchart and Arvanti rounded up 23 UCSD undergrads – 12 women, 11 men, all “native speakers of SoCal English." Their backgrounds varied widely: most self-identified as middle-class, but six said they were upper-class, and four said they were lower-class. Eight of them were bilingual. But despite their differences, they all used uptalk, the authors say.

It’s easy to dismiss uptalk as the airhead’s language quirk, but it can be a useful way of speaking: Ritchart and Arvanti identified an interesting way uptalk is used – to “hold the floor,” or to let the listener know they’re not done talking. The uptalk sort of acts as a verbal comma, explains Arvanti, who notes that their study is not the first to find this usage. For example, in the map experiment, the speaker might say something like, “OK, so, go toward Warren?” before continuing on with his instructions (“And then do you see Valley Mall?”). Ritchart and Arvanti found that 45 percent of “floor holding” instances used uptalk, and 16 percent of simple statements did, too.
