The Trick . . .

. . . to taking the high road

. . . is making sure that no one realizes that you are taking the high road. So you must, in effect, execute the triple-whammy of :

1. knowing that your goal is the right and proper one without saying so [possibly most important and trickiest]

2. taking the right tack in presenting (arguing? discussing?) your case diplomatically

3. doing both of the above in a manner that betrays no 'superiority', sarcasm or preachiness

Roads . . .

. . . more and less traveled . . .

People talk about all kinds of things
Like the weather
Like their politics
Like the things that they watch on TV
But still the roads diverge

Funny though all this chatter don't mean a thing
When compared with the wondering
When they speak of just how
The roads diverge

There comes a moment
You’re suddenly face with a choice
All that you thought that you
Knew becomes smoke
And all of your detailed and
Best laid-out plans
Have become just one
Great big joke

Some will cope
Some will agonize endlessly
Pleading take this away from me
This decision I face

The Right . . .

. . . to bear. . .

A Las Vegas woman who was killed in an apparent road rage shooting . . .[recently] drove around with her armed son looking for the suspect who would later shoot her in front of her home, police said Tuesday. Tammy Meyers, 44, was shot by someone in a gray or silver four-door sedan outside her home around 11:22 p.m. Thursday, and died two days later. The suspect or suspects remain unidentified, police said. Police said Meyers and her armed 22-year-old son followed a car she believed had been involved in a road rage incident earlier that night, that they stopped following the vehicle and returned home, and when they got there a car matching the description of the one they'd followed pulled up and someone inside it began shooting. Meyers' son returned fire, police said.
"I did what I had to do to protect my family. Everyone can think what they have to think; I did it for a reason. And I'd do it for anyone I love," Meyers' son, Brandon, said at a vigil Tuesday. . .Meyers' husband, Robert Meyers, told mourners at the vigil that his late wife was a beautiful woman who loved her kids, but also that "she hated bullies.". . ."

With all due respect for the dead, I feel:
1. grateful that this young man does NOT love me
2. this beautiful, loving woman rivaled Mel Gibson in her overwhelming desire for vengeance (searching for the original 'road rage' guy? COME ON!!)
3. she hated bullies badly enough to find them long after the incident occurred
4. this story could have ended with the original 'road rage' person dead if the beautiful, loving woman and her armed son had found him first

I could be wrong . . .

Another Day. . .

The first installment of the fruit of the vine is safely housed at the foot of the staircase while the coffee perks just loudly enough to know that the power is on. There's no no haze skimming the surface of the lake this morning and it's just early enough that the sun is still below the eastern horizon. Just as most mornings, a breeze is tickling the early autumn foliage enough to prompt a gentle dance, although this morning while the water surface is no mirror, yesterday's baby whitecaps are not evident today and a hawk is surveying the distant shore lazily yet purposefully.

Soon, after light morning nourishment, we will take to the road for a non-vineyard trip to the north where an unusual, yet growing organization was born. While it is a fascinating cult, as are all other organized religions, that began in the early 19th century and (by their own account) numbers over 6 million members in the United States.

One unique element of the group is a special garment which takes the place of regular underwear. Members begin wearing it during their first visit to their temple, where they receive individual instruction on how the garment should be worn and cared for, and at which time, they undergo a special ceremony.

. . . (among many other hilarious things) . . . "I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members."

MEMBER OF THE CLUB

Who doesn't want to belong to something; a need that's bigger than us. You feel it deep in your heart, desire for attention; a little trust; a little trust. Now I'm a member of the club and I'm not really sure how far it will get me. And I'm not really sure how far I will go.

I felt it so many times, that yearning to be a part of it all. I couldn't understand why I didn't fit into your kind of style; your kind of style. Now I'm a member of the club and I'm not really sure how far it will get me. And I'm not really sure how far I will go.

I'm an outsider from so long ago; a solo performer on my own road, on my own road.

Why so much serious doubt consumes me I can't begin to describe. Just when I thought that I found a greater confidence I want to hide, I want to hide. Now I'm a member of the club and I'm not really sure how far it will get me. And I'm not really sure how far I will go.
