Cognitive . . .

. . . dysfunction . . .

I am not old by today's standards, being in my late 50s.  People my age do, though, tend to begin thinking about things that do not generally preoccupy 20-somethings.  I mean things like mortality, legacy, beneficence and health- both physical and mental.

Pam and her friend recently had a discussion about one of those topics.  The friend was explaining that she has set a retirement date and needs to do that sooner rather than later because she feels that she just doesn't have the 'brainpower' to continue to function in her professional capacity in an optimum manner.  Pam, sympathizing of course, offer the suggestion of consulting some reading material which she had recently encountered.  She said that her friend should google 'cognitive dysfunction'. Her friend, betraying some interest in the topic asked, "what is cognitive dysfunction' to which Pam responded, "Actually, I don't remember. . . "

Enough is enough. . .

. . . of the same old same old . . .

 There is no “lesser of two evils” in the upcoming election, with both parties controlled by corporate money. If we elected a leader like Rocky Anderson, and then got behind him at different levels of government, including local levels, think how much could be accomplished. These issues, mentioned frequently in editorials but not frequently enough discussed by voters or by the BIG media, desperately need to be discussed.  Don't our children (and their children) deserve a brighter future than anyone can envision now?

Some say “it can’t be done!" If no one ever begins to try, to start, to do what they can, then maybe it can't be done. People doubted America would be founded (or even discovered); they doubted the Berlin Wall would ever come down; that the Cold War would end, before the world did; that World Wars would ever end; that slavery would never end, that women would never vote, that the Civil Right’s Act would never pass;

The Wright brothers, Henry Ford, Clarence Birdseye, John Kennedy are just a few who attempted and achieved the impossible. Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball produced the "I Love Lucy" pilot with their own money after the major networks poo-poohed their premise for a television sitcom. Fred Smith received a C on his term paper about overnight delivery because the idea wasn't feasible long before Federal Express was on its way to long-term success. Steve Jobs wanted to give everyone a computer at a time when nobody realized computers were necessary to have.

So why not NOW?!!

Aging or improving?. . .

There comes a time when certain facts must be faced. One fact, from which there is no hiding, is that I am getting old. Who isn't. Technically, one begins aging immediately after conception.

After a 'funerial' weekend, one can't help but ponder such concepts to some extent.

With regard to aging though, truth be told, it has advantages. I have finally reached a point where I have a lot more confidence than I had twenty years ago (boy, sure wish I HAD such confidence twenty years ago) and I actually like where I am. And I like being around young people, something that I didn't think too much about when I was a young person. I like the enthusiasm of younger people. And I don't necessarily feel a need to add my verbal two cents (unless I'm asked) while they are expressing their views with sincere, unwaivering conviction. I have even found that if I shut up and listen well, I can also learn something in the process.

Oh yeah, while writing this and checking email simultaneously, I received a message that says, "Attractive Senior single online looking for You!"
