Parties . . .

(from How The Hell Did This  Happen?  The Election of 2016 by P.J. O'Rourke)
". . . The reason that American political parties have no constitutional standing is that the framers of the Constitution hoped America would have no political parties. . . In Federalist Paper No. 9 Alexander Hamilton declares "domestic faction" to be "the cause of incurable disorder and imbecility in the government." . . . In Federalist Paper No. 10 James Madison inveighs against "the violence of faction," calls it a "dangerous vice," and warns that "the public good is disregarded in the conflictd of rival parties.". . . Madison . . . describes, with eerie prescience, our Democratic and Republican presidential primaries and caucuses 228 years in the future: "So strong is the propensity of mankind to fall into mutual animosities that where no substantial occasion presents itself the most frivolous and fanciful distinctions have been sufficient to kindle their unfriendly passions and excite their most violent conflicts". . . "

Parties . . .

The stars lay
In a blanket above
The gentle breeze
Blowing in from the sea
The last light flickers
From one lonely candle
Never before
Was a night half as perfect
For you and me

But there was a party last night
Yeah there was a party next door
Cause there's a boy sleeping on the back porch

You would have
Noticed a pin drop that evening
The peace and calm
When romance fills the air
Ambience flowing
From Coltrane and Hartman
But barely twenty feet away
We'd no clue what was
Happening there

But there was a party last night
Yeah there was a party next door
Cause there's a boy sleeping on the back porch

No blaring rockn' roll
No bottles on the walk
No screaming shouting
And no fights
Nobody called the law
No sirens in the night
Just one young man
Stretched out on a chaise
Sleeping it off

Occasions
Such as this should be savored
The combination of circumstance rare
You may just be
The true love that I've searched for
I think though
That the folks in the house that's next door
Just don't care

Two . . .

(from http://www.selfgovernment.us/news/3)
"There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution."
-- John Adams, Letter to Jonathan Jackson (2 October 1780), "The Works of John Adams", vol 9, p.511

Fresh . . .

My registered political affiliation is 'non-affiliated' and that's the way I like it. I have learned over many years and through much experience that I just do not make a good club member. This has been true as applicable to the Boy Scouts, Church, Social Clubs and even music-related associations.  It's not a superiority (nor inferiority) complex by any means. It's just that I never feel like I truly 'fit.'

Needless to say neither of the two major (read: MONEY) political parties move me exclusively or sufficiently enough to subscribe.  But I must say, now that the mid-term elections are over, that I have no problem with Republicans taking a majority of the Senate, nor with my home state's replacing its Democratic regime with a Republican.  Three distinct reasons come to mind as to why I feel this way.  They are:

1.  After such a protracted, politically contentious period between the two biggies, I am hoping that some reasonable Republicans (yes, I believe they actually do exist) will step up and help Washington regain its functionality.  Hell, this is a good opportunity for a brand-new hero (or some brand-new heroes) to capture the hearts of the citizenry.

2.  Also, after the gridlock we've seen, possibly some formerly narrow-minded Republicans (or even Democrats, for that matter) will listen, think and learn and even change their minds about SOMETHING for the betterment of her/his constituents.

3.  This is the result of the democratic process and it really is a wonderful thing.  Many countries do not have this.  (yeah, I sound like your high-school civics teacher, right??) The process worked, like it has so many times before and will so many times again.  And if the new majority proves by their actions that they really are not up to the job, there will be another election bringing with it the chance to make another change.

And although I shouldn't mention a fourth reason, I will anyway. . .should number three become a reality, we'll know exactly where to go to place blame and can take some comfort in the fact that we didn't help put them there.

Enough is enough. . .

. . . of the same old same old . . .

There is no “lesser of two evils” in the upcoming election, with both parties controlled by corporate money. If we elected a leader like Rocky Anderson, and then got behind him at different levels of government, including local levels, think how much could be accomplished. These issues, mentioned frequently in editorials but not frequently enough discussed by voters or by the BIG media, desperately need to be discussed.  Don't our children (and their children) deserve a brighter future than anyone can envision now?

Some say “it can’t be done!" If no one ever begins to try, to start, to do what they can, then maybe it can't be done. People doubted America would be founded (or even discovered); they doubted the Berlin Wall would ever come down; that the Cold War would end, before the world did; that World Wars would ever end; that slavery would never end, that women would never vote, that the Civil Right’s Act would never pass;

The Wright brothers, Henry Ford, Clarence Birdseye, John Kennedy are just a few who attempted and achieved the impossible. Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball produced the "I Love Lucy" pilot with their own money after the major networks poo-poohed their premise for a television sitcom. Fred Smith received a C on his term paper about overnight delivery because the idea wasn't feasible long before Federal Express was on its way to long-term success. Steve Jobs wanted to give everyone a computer at a time when nobody realized computers were necessary to have.

So why not NOW?!!
(Thanks to Daniel Geery's  Justice Party: “Not a Snowball’s Chance in Hell!”)

Now that I am grown up. . .

. . . at least SOMETIMES I feel like I'm grown up . . .
. . . I need to take a stand on the future of my country.  Even well into adulthood, more politically- vocal elders of mine voiced opinions about 'wasting' a vote or 'throwing away' a vote that would elect 'his' opponent.  Well it's time for principle.  At the core of any political disagreement, it seems that many debaters actually agree on issues like waste in government,  a bloated and expensive campaign process or inequality in one form or another.  And not matter how many good things the current President has accomplished (for those concerned with facts), he could have done much more. Be aware that we also have, in addition to the BIG TWO,  Socialist, Libertarian, Green and Liberty parties involved in the election.  Educate yourself, heaven knows the network news is NOT going to help you out there.  And vote your conscience and your heart.

Ten reasons to vote for Rocky Anderson (Liberty Party):
  1. The promotion of the public interest through the defeat of the systemic corruption that has caused massive failures in public policy.
  2. An immediate end to the on-going wars.
  3. Essential health care coverage for all citizens.
  4. Urgent international leadership by the U.S. to prevent against the most catastrophic consequences of climate disruption.
  5. Adequate revenues to balance the budget through fair taxation.
  6. Treatment of substance abuse as a public health, rather than criminal justice, issue.
  7. Control of the Federal Reserve by the Treasury Department and Congress.
  8. A balanced budget (or a surplus) except in times of war or major recession.
  9. An end to the legal concept of corporate “personhood;” a constitutional amendment to overrule Citizens United.
  10. An end to the stranglehold on our government by the military-industrial complex.

Where it's at is here with you. . .

. . . Where it's at is here with you. . .

I've never been one to follow trends. I won't be with the crowd when they round the bend. But I'll be with you until the very end cause, where it's at is here with you. Fancy parties leave me cold and drained. Discos crowds and posturing in vain only feeds some silly appetite unnamed. Where it's at is here with you.

I don't want to see the moon. Fly to Paris May or June. I just want a one-way-fare to any place where you'll be there.

I don't need gold or precious things; fancy clothes or even diamond rings. I only need the thrill that being with you brings. Where it's at is here with you. For fame or power I have no desire. I don't crave acceptance or to be admired. I'm just happy sitting with you by the fire. Where it's at is here with you.

I don't want to see the moon. Fly to Paris May or June. I just want a one-way-fare to any place where you'll be there.

HERE WITH YOU
