Men Without . . .

. . . balls

The U.S. team should have refused to play.

(from http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/women-forbidden-attending-u-s-vs-iran-volleyball-game-n378356 from June 18, 2015)
". . . Women have been "forbidden" from watching Iran play the U.S. volleyball team . . . despite the government signaling it would loosen restrictions on females attending sports events. Earlier this month, Iran's Vice President for Women and Family Affairs Shahindokht Molaverdi announced that a limited number of women — mainly members of players' families — would be allowed at upcoming men's volleyball matches. In an interview with The Associated Press, Molaverdi said women could also now watch live basketball, handball and tennis. However, women would not be allowed to attend soccer, swimming and wrestling. . . And in a clear sign of back-pedaling, the state-run ISNA news service on Friday quoted an official from Iran's volleyball federation as saying "the entry of women at volleyball matches is forbidden." The issue garnered worldwide attention after British-Iranian woman Ghoncheh Ghavami was arrested last year while protesting with other women outside Tehran's Azadi Stadium during a volleyball match between Iran and Italy. . . Nonetheless, the incident resulted in the International Volleyball Federation to call for Iran to allow women to attend all games or lose the right to host international tournaments. . . And over the course of the last six months, the government of Hassan Rouhani has indicated it wants to loosen the restrictions on women attending sports events — which date back to the 1979 Islamic revolution. . . "

. . . or just spell it out in the league rules. . . "All Welcome:

Grow Up . . .

Why don't you grow up
just as fast as you can
All of your innocence
Is a flash in the pan
It's overrated you say
Tryin' to be a nice guy
It's so much easier this way
So why even try
Too many cowboys

Everyone's watching
So you think all the time
Maintain the image
But it's all in your mind
What's so damned special about
Being hard as a nail
Banishing subtlety
Sets yourself up to fail
Too many cowboys

Just too many cowboys
Not quite enough men
Who will listen
Rather learn than
Only just pretend

You wear a big hat
It's a Stetson of course
Chew some tobacco
Take a ride on your horse
You've got some buddies I see
Just a little hard-boiled
They've got some dirt on their hands
They all dabble in oil
Too many cowboys

Can't say you're sorry
Can't say you're wrong
God is on your side
He's been there all along
It doesn't matter to you
If they're hurt or they're dead
You've been above it so long
I'll stick by what I said
too many cowboys

Just too many cowboys
Not quite enough men
Who will listen
Rather learn than
Only just pretend

Only if we knew back then
The things that we know now
You'd have stayed back there
And we'd be better off and how

Get in your big truck
And just drive away
You have no interest
in the things that I say
Nor did you ever
Listen that much at all
You set yourself up
For some big kind of fall
Too many cowboys

And just like a cowboy
Just the kind that you are
Virile and macho
But without a guitar
Into the sunset you rode
And the credits did roll
Not a regret did you feel
But you've taken your toll
Too Many Cowboys

Just too many cowboys
Not quite enough men
Who will listen
Rather learn than
Only just pretend

Spanish . . .

(from Don Juan by George Gordon Lord Byron)

. . . "My boy!" said he, "amidst this motley crew
Of Georgians, Russians, Nubians, and what not,
All ragamuffins differing but in hue,
With whom it is our luck to cast our lot,
The only gentlemen seem I and you;
So let us be acquainted, as we ought:
If I could yield you any consolation,
'T would give me pleasure. — Pray, what is your nation?"

When Juan answer'd — "Spanish!" he replied,
"I thought, in fact, you could not be a Greek;
Those servile dogs are not so proudly eyed:
Fortune has play'd you here a pretty freak,
But that's her way with all men, till they're tried;
But never mind, — she'll turn, perhaps, next week;
She has served me also much the same as you,
Except that I have found it nothing new."

"Pray, sir," said Juan, "if I may presume,
What brought you here?" — "Oh! nothing very rare —
Six Tartars and a drag-chain." — "To this doom
But what conducted, if the question's fair,
Is that which I would learn." — "I served for some
Months with the Russian army here and there,
And taking lately, by Suwarrow's bidding,
A town, was ta'en myself instead of Widdin.". . .

"Have you no friends?" — "I had — but, by God's blessing,
Have not been troubled with them lately. Now
I have answer'd all your questions without pressing,
And you an equal courtesy should show.'
"Alas!" said Juan, "'t were a tale distressing,
And long besides." — "Oh! if 't is really so,
You're right on both accounts to hold your tongue;
A sad tale saddens doubly, when't is long.

"But droop not: Fortune at your time of life,
Although a female moderately fickle,
Will hardly leave you (as she's not your wife)
For any length of days in such a pickle.
To strive, too, with our fate were such a strife
As if the corn-sheaf should oppose the sickle:
Men are the sport of circumstances, when
The circumstances seem the sport of men.". . .

Woman. . .

(from Born of a Woman by John Shelby Spong)
". . . Few people stopped to realize that the woman who was being hailed as the ideal mode was a woman who had been totally defined by men.  That a permanent virgin can be an ideal woman only to a celibate male did not appear to be  obvious as the values of the church were presented as objective revealed truths. Theological discussions continued to rage around Mary in the male citadels of theological learning. Without exception all of these discussions led to the further erosion of Mary's humanity.

The more evil the flesh was thought to be, the more Mary's virtue needed to be protected. She became not just the virgin but the perpetual virgin and then the postpartum virgin. It became an issue of great import to prove that Mary retained her unbroken hymen throughout childbirth. The male theologians were equal even to that task. They searched the Scriptures in a paroxysm of wild exegesis to find texts to undergird postpartum virginity. The prophet Ezekiel had once written (ca. 580 B.C.E.) , "This gate shall remain shut, . . . and no one shall enter by it; for the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it shall remain shut" (Ezek. 44:2). Without so much as an apology, this text was fastened on to prove the now-popular claim for postpartum virginity. It had been, the fathers shouted, preshadowed even in the prophets! Midrash separated from the Jewish tradition that created it had become absurd. . ."

Letters . . .

(from Illustrissimi by Albino Luciani [Pope John Paul I])

[from a letter to G. K. Chesterton. . . ]
". . . Progress that involves men who don't recognize a singe Father in God becomes a constant danger: without a parallel moral progress, which is continuous and internal, it develops what is lowest and  cruellest in man, making him a machine possessed by machines, a number manipulated by numbers; he becomes what Papini called 'a raving savage, who, to satisfy his predatory, destructive, and licentious instincts, no longer uses a club, but has the immense forces of nature and mechanical invention to draw upon.'

Yes, I know there are plenty of people who think the opposite of this,  They consider religion a consoling dream, invented by oppressed people who imagine another world, a non-existent  world in which they can later find what is stolen from them today by their oppressors.  These oppressors have arranged the whole thing for their own benefit, to keep the oppressed underfoot and to quieten the instinct towards a class struggle, an instinct that, were it not for religion, would urge them to fight.

It is no good reminding these people that the Christian religion itself favours the revival of proletarian awareness, that is exalts the poor and foresees a just future. . ."

Too Much . . .

. . . wisdom?

. . . can't happen. . .

“The difference between a moral man and a man of honor is that the latter regrets a discreditable act, even when it has worked and he has not been caught.”
-H. L. Mencken

“When men exercise their reason coolly and freely on a variety of distinct questions, they inevitably fall into different opinions on some of them.  When they are governed by a common passion, their opinions, if they are so to be called, will be the same.”
-Alexander Hamilton

Pumpkin. . .

(Andy Griffith's "What It Was Was Football" http://www.elyrics.net/read/a/andy-griffith-lyrics/what-it-was-was-football-lyrics.html )
It was back last October, I believe it was.
We was agonna hold a tent service off at this college town.
And we got thar about dinnertime on Saturday.
And uh Different ones of us thought that we ought to get us a mouthful to eat before that we set up the tent.
And so we got offa the truck and followed this little bunch of people
through this small little bitty patch of woods thar,
and we come up on a big sign it says, "Get somethin' t' Eat chyere!"

I went up and got me two hot dogs and a big orange drink,
and before that I could take a-ry mouthful of that food,
this whole raft of people come up around me and got me to where I couldn't eat nothing, up like,
and I dropped my big orange drink. I did.
Well, friends, they commenced to move, and there wasn't so much that I could do but move with them.

Well, we commenced to go through all kinds of doors and gates and I don't know what- all,
and I looked up over one of 'em and it says, "North Gate."
We kept on a-going through thar, and pretty soon we come up on a young boy and he says,
"Ticket, please."
And I says, "Friend, I don't have a ticket;
I don't even know where it is that I'm a-going!" I did.
Well, he says, "Come on out as quick as you can."
And I says, "I'll do 'er; I'll turn right around the first chance I get."

Well, we kept on a-moving through there,
and pretty soon everybody got where it was that they was a-going,
because they parted and I could see pretty good. I could.
And what I seen was this whole raft of people a-sittin' on these two banks
and a-lookin at one another across this pretty little green cow pasture. Well, they was.

And somebody had took and drawed white lines all over it and drove postys in it,
and I don't know what all,
and I looked down there and I seen five or six convicts a running up and down
and a-blowing whistles . They was!
And then I looked down there and I seen these pretty girls a-wearin' these little bitty short dresses
and a-dancing around, and so I sit down and thought I'd see what it was that was a-gonna to happen. I did.

About the time I got set down good I looked down there
and I seen thirty or forty men come runnin' out of one end of a great big outhouse down there. They did!
and everybody where I was a-settin' got up and hollered!

And about that time thirty or forty come runnin' out of the other end of that outhouse, and the other bankful, they got up and hollered.

And I asked this fella that was a besittin' beside of me,
"Friend, what is it that they're a-hollerin' for?
Well, he whopped me on the back and he says,
"Buddy, have a drink!" Well, I says,
"Well, I believe I will have another big orange.
And I got it and set back down.

And When I got down there again I seen that the men had got in two little bitty bunches down there
real close together, and they voted. They did. They voted.
They elected one man apiece,
and them two men come out in the middle of that cow pasture
and shook hands like they hadn't seen one another in a long time.
And Then a convict come over to where they was a-standin',
and he took out a quarter and they commenced to odd-man right there! They did!
Well, After a while I seen what it was they was odd-manning for.
It was that both bunchesfull of them wanted this funny lookin little pumpkin to play with. they did
And I know, friends, that they couldn't eat it because they kicked it the whole evenin'
and it never busted.

But, uh, anyhow what I was a-tellin' was that
Both bunchesful wanted that thing.
One bunch got it and it made the other bunch just as mad as they could be!
And Friends, I seen that evenin' the awfulest fight that I ever have seen in all my life !!
They would run at one -another and kick one- another
and throw one another down and stomp on one another
and grind their feet in one another
and I don't know what-
all and just as fast as one of 'em would get hurt,
they'd tote him off and run another one on !!

Well, they done that as long as I sat there, but pretty soon this boy that had said
"Ticket, please." He come up to me and says,
"Friend, you're gonna have to leave because it is that you don't have a ticket."
And I says, "Well, all right." And I got up and left.

And I don't know friends, to this day, what it was that they was a doin' down there,
but I have studied about it.
I think it was that it's some kindly of a contest where they see which bunchful of them men can take that pumpkin and run from one end of that cow pasture to the other without either gettin' knocked down or steppin' in somethin'.

Keeping score . . .

Jagger 4,000
Wilt Chamberlain 20,000
Warren Beatty 12,775
(. . . From http://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/why-does-it-matter-how-many-partners-shes-had/)
". . . It’s understandable to be curious about the sexual lives of our peers. It makes sense to want to know what the averages are. (According to the experts at the Kinsey Institute, the average number of lifetime sexual partners for men aged 30 to 44 is around seven, while for women in that same age group, it’s four—both lower than you might think).

But the number has different meanings for men and women. The old double standard is still alive and well: a man with more sexual partners than his buddies may be teasingly called a “man whore,” but the epithet is a compliment, not an insult. Ask a woman who has dared reveal her number to someone who considers it too high, and she’ll surely tell you a story of being “slut-shamed.”

It’s quite common for a guy to worry about a girlfriend’s sexual past. Too many men are still raised to see sex as crude competition, in which bedding a woman who has already had a lot of lovers counts less than scoring with a woman who is “hard to get.” But I think the average guy’s worry is simpler than that. The more men his girlfriend has slept with, the greater number of lovers to which she can compare his skills. . . "

My question, "Who cares?"
