Bad . . .

. . . bedtime story . . .

Once upon a time a 'well-loved' Princess, seeking to the the Princess-in-charge of all the Land, fell afoul of 'those-who-would-quash-her-dream' and as a result, almost lost her chance to attain her diligently-sought title. It seems that in her past capacity as Princess of State, she exhibited some disregard for the principles one would expect from a respectable Princess of State. One such situation, of which many said there were numerous, involved a Squire who generously contributed to a foundation of which the Prince (her husband, you see) was in charge. As a reward for his kindly supporting her husband's cause, it appeared that he was to be rewarded with a position on the Inter-Land Security Advisory Board (ISAB) even though had not one white of knowledge or experience in the things that were done by the ISAB-namely . In fact, his only experience involved providing advice to the rulers of the Land on the use of tactical nuclear weapons and on other crucial arms control issues. When ABC News of the Land inquired of the Princess' staff the reason for the Squire's name being placed on such a list at all, the Princess' staff stalled the reporters and offered no explanation. Then, 'Mysteriously' on the very next day, the Squire, without explanation one, resigned his new post. ABC News of the Land later addressed the Squire directly about the incident.  He became upset and had security threaten the ABC News of the Land reporter with arrest, much the same as the Prince and Princess themselves would most likely have done under similar circumstances. Needless to say, they all lived happily ever after.

All . . .

new meaning to the term "Dedication"

(from http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/al-qaeda-foe-survived-suicide-attack-named-top/story?id=17644565)
A ". . . bomber, who blew himself up close to Prince Muhammed, had hidden the bomb in his own rectum. The bomb was allegedly designed by AQAP bombmaker Ibrahim al-Asiri, the same Saudi expatriate who designed the underwear bomb used by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab in his attempt to bring down Northwest flight 253 over Detroit on Christmas 2009. Prince Muhammad escaped the August 2009 attack with minor injuries. His would-be assassin, who died in the blast, was al-Asiri's brother Abdullah. . ."

Royal . . .

(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdullah_of_Saudi_Arabia)
". . . On 16 February 2003, Parade magazine's David Wallechinsky rated King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah as the second worst dictators in the world. Most of this criticism stems from the fact that most of Saudi citizens live under a strict Wahhabist interpretation of Sharia law, which mandates the amputation of hands as a punishment for theft and floggings for crimes like drunkenness. Execution by public beheading is common for murder, rape, drug trafficking and witchcraft, and Abdullah's policies towards the rights of women have also been criticized. In a slight rebuff to accusations of human rights violations, Saudi inmates of Najran Province sent the King well-wishes from jail and wished him a speedy recovery.

King Abdullah has also been criticized for his policies on religious freedom and the Saudi government allegedly has arrested Shiite pilgrims on the Hajj. On 24 January 2007, Human Rights Watch sent an open letter to King Abdullah asking him to cease religious persecution of the Ahmadi faith in Saudi Arabia. Two letters were sent in November 2006 and February 2007 asking him to remove the travel ban on critics of the Saudi government. Human Rights Watch has not yet indicated whether they have received any response to these letters.

On 30 October 2007, during a state visit to the United Kingdom, King Abdullah was accused by protesters of being a "murderer" and a "torturer". Concerns were raised in the UK about the treatment of women and homosexuals by the Saudi kingdom and over alleged bribes involving arms deals between Saudi Arabia and the UK. . ."

Machiavellian . . .

. . . terror

(from wikipedia.com)
"Machiavellianism", is a widely used negative term to characterize unscrupulous politicians of the sort Machiavelli described in The Prince. The book itself gained enormous notoriety and wide readership because the author seemed to be endorsing behavior often deemed as evil and immoral.

(from The Hidden History of 9-11, Edited by Paul Zarembka)
". . . It is vital in a democracy to question the state's own account of itself - to engage in what I call, oppositional theorizing.  Rather than accepting the official story of 9-11, which contains so many unsatisfactory elements, the left ought to theorize the attacks on New York and Washington from an oppositional standpoint. "Citizens are free . . . so long as nothing is hidden from them. Thus, they must watch, surveil, expose and reveal" (Dean, 2000, p. 16).  Sadly, the established left has done the opposite. Respected left commentators have embraced a radicalized version of the White House 9-11 account of September 11. (sic)  Claiming the attacks are payback for globalization exposes the left to charges of supporting terrorism.  Even while denying stereotyped views of Islam, the left hardly doubts bin Laden's "cartoonish parody ... [of] Muslims as angry and violent" (Gusterson, 2004, p. 144).

The left embraces a distorted notion of political violence that sees it as an understandable response of the weak to provocations of the powerful.  Yet, what I have called Machiavellian state terrorism is a common feature in history.  Acts of terror are vulnerable to manipulation, and far more likely to be a weapon of state rulers and their agents, than the oppressed masses.  As a legitimized protection racket, the state may be tempted to inflict harm secretly on its own citizens in order to achieve unpublicized but highly desired goals.  Rival power holders may find it inconvenient to confront lies which help maintain the current regime.  This is likely the case with September 11, which provided American power a convenient excuse to conduct ware on Afghanistan and Iraq that had been planned well before.  The left abjures conspiracy theory (while enabling the official bin Laden story) but oppositional theorizing - questioning government and looking for connections between events, perceiving the world "to be organized beneath the surface" (Sturken, 1997, p. 77) - is a critical feature of what it means to be vitally active in the political universe. . . "

Miles and Miles of quotes. . .

(Quotes from Miles Davis. . . )
"I've changed music four or five times. What have you done of any importance other than be white?"
Davis attended a reception in honor of Ray Charles at Ronald Reagan's White House in 1987. This was his reply to a Washington society lady seated next to him who had asked him what he had done to be invited.

"If somebody told me I only had an hour to live, I'd spend it choking a white man. I'd do it nice and slow."  During an interview, after growing aggravated about questions on the subject of race.

"A legend is an old man with a cane known for what he used to do. I'm still doing it."  On being called a legend.

"Jazz is like blues with a shot of heroin"

"Who's that motherfucker? He can't play shit!"
on Cecil Taylor

"You a motherfucker."  a compliment to Chick Corea, who thought he was about to be fired.

"He plays like somebody is standing on his foot."  on Eric Dolphy

"He could very well be the Duke Ellington of Rock 'n' Roll."  on Prince

"Why'd you put that white bitch on there?"
To George Avakian after seeing the cover chosen by Columbia for Miles Ahead.

"You can't play anything on a horn that Louis hasn't played." and "I love Pops" (Louis' nickname)
on Louis Armstrong in a Playboy magazine interview.

"I’ll play it and tell you what it is later."   During a recording session for Prestige, on the album "Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" (1956).

"Listen baby, when I say later, I mean it! Later!"  After being approached by a relentless interviewer.

"There are no wrong notes."  My ego only needs a good rhythm section.

On being asked what he looked for in musicians.  "When you are creating your own shit, man, even the sky ain't the limit."

"Try taking the fucking horn out of your mouth."  Davis was questioning the increasing length of John Coltrane solos, and Trane answered "I don't know how to stop."

"Don't play what's there, play what's not there.
