“Rod,” as he prefers to be called, is quite the colorful character, blending, as he does, a Salisbury, England, upbringing with 18 years of Americanization. But if it weren’t for this pond hopper’s passion for music, the Songwriter Showcase that’s been running at Brewer’s Alley for seven years, (where you can hear live, original music . . . every Monday night) might not have occurred.
And what could be more inspiring on a Monday evening than experiencing original works of performing art with an intimate local audience, in a setting that—with its raftered ceilings and paneled walls—whispers of culture and enchantment? Nothing else comes to mind, except to say that this night of cultural enrichment is also free—though, tips, of course, are suggested for the featured musicians.

"During the morning, (Lt. Gen Jubal) Early held the city of Frederick for $200,000 ransom lest he burn it, as his forces under McCausland were to set the torch to Chambersburg, Pa three weeks later. The mayor asked for some time to raise the money; but when it was clear that (Major Gen Lewis) Wallace could not save them, the city banks produced the funds. Unable to get compensation later from the Federal Government, the city assumed the debt, which was not paid off until 1951"

. . .and a piano player? A pizza can feed a family of four. (drum accent & kick) But a pizza cannot guarantee to use 'more notes per minute' than many other pianists in the area, and a pizza cannot 'consistently create aural pictures intelligently, pleasantly, and whimsically, and that's just within one song'

Tonight, at the Monday Night Songwriters' Showcase (now in its ninth year!) at Brewer's Alley, 124 N. Market St., in beautiful downtown Frederick, MD
All the way from Ashville, NC – NIKKI TALLEY, accompanied by her husband, JASON SHARP! This touring couple has been compared to another husband and wife duo – Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, but Nikki has more power in her voice, and a little more Appalachian in her songs. She plays guitar and clawhammer banjo and has an extra helping of that mysterious quality called charisma; she will hold your attention! Come and give them a listen! http://www.nikkitalley.com/
The piano prelude this Monday is from Brewer’s Alley veteran keyboard maestro ROCKIN’ RAY JOZWIAK (five years and counting) who will be performing his monthly piano workout for our entertainment. You will hear many notes in Ray’s set and some may spill over into someone else's set too! Come early to be sure of good seats (don't forget we start at 7:15 pm now).
Three-song cameos this week are from REID SCHOENFELDER, (doing a rescheduled set from last week), RICK GALLOWAY, and Hagerstown’s gain, Frederick’s loss, DOUG ALAN WILCOX. We'll also be hearing from poet JOHN HOLLY, some songs from TODD C. WALKER, and Roderick Deacey will be singing a bit and reading a poem or two.
MISTER RON GOAD should be back to bang things this week, rested and ready to rock’n’roll, so any performer who would like a little rhythmic reinforcement, please don't hesitate to ask! Do be prepared for the energetic drum break, though, which can extend your songs by several minutes – think Gene Krupa

Monday Night Songwriters' Showcase is now in its ninth year!) The program starts at 7:30 pm with a piano prelude, followed by three or four songwriters doing three songs each (lots of variety). The featured songwriter for the evening goes on around 9 pm for around an hour, followed by two or three more three-song performers. Somewhere in the mix we may throw in some poetry. Our MCs are Ron Goad, Todd C. Walker and Tomy Wright, frequently interrupted by Rod Deacey on sound.
There is no admission charge per se, but there is a collection for the featured performer. If you don't want to put money in the hat, you don't have to. And you don't have to give a reason, or you can simply say “I can't spare anything this week” or words to that effect. That is totally fine as people’s circumstances change all the time.
If you CAN afford to put cash in the hat, please give generously – most touring songwriters live on an unbelievably small amount of money. They often drive all night to their next gig because they can't afford a motel. It is not an easy life. And all the tip money goes to the featured songwriter – no money is siphoned off for Ron, Todd or Rod, or for Tomy, Walt or John Holly, or for any of the cameo players, who perform for nothing. It actually costs them money to put on the shows, but they keep doing it for mysterious reasons that they have yet to fathom!
Featured songwriters are a mix of national and regional touring performers, with many award winners from all genres.
Brewer’s Alley was located on what is currently South Court Street. Beer Production ceased in 1901 when a large fire consumed the brewery of John Kuhn, who was the last in a long line of brewers to occupy space along the banks of Carroll Creek. For over 153 years, from the very beginning of Frederick County, Brewer’s Alley was a fixture in the social and economic landscape of Frederick. Ninety-five years after leaving Frederick, Brewer’s Alley is back!
Brewer’s Alley’s location at 124 North Market Street is steeped in Frederick history. The first residents of Frederick held a lottery to raise money to build a town hall and market house on this location in 1765, which was completed in 1769. This structure served its purpose for over 100 years and was witness to the birth of Frederick as a city. The Market House spanned the Civil War, including the ransoming of the city by Confederate General Jubal Early.
