Songs . . .

. . . without music . . .

(from http://www.frederickgorilla.com/the-art-of-listening)
“Rod,” as he prefers to be called, is quite the colorful character, blending, as he does, a Salisbury, England, upbringing with 18 years of Americanization. But if it weren’t for this pond hopper’s passion for music, the Songwriter Showcase that’s been running at Brewer’s Alley for seven years, (where you can hear live, original music . . . every Monday night) might not have occurred.

And what could be more inspiring on a Monday evening than experiencing original works of performing art with an intimate local audience, in a setting that—with its raftered ceilings and paneled walls—whispers of culture and enchantment? Nothing else comes to mind, except to say that this night of cultural enrichment is also free—though, tips, of course, are suggested for the featured musicians.

One Small Turtle. . .

. . . made it through another day. . .

I swerved to miss a turtle
As he watched the traffic hurtle
Past him from the center of the street
I saw him stick his snout out
Pulled off and played the Boy Scout
And snatched him from the jaws of defeat…

It was just a single swerve
And surely didn't deserve
A hundred-dollar fine for Careless Driving
But the Highway Patrol
Said “Think of it as toll --
Now please drive on, sir, I’m advising”

Just one swerve, that's all it took to
Get written up in that little black book
Just one swerve, what can I say?
One small turtle
Made it through another day

If you’re a Hindu or a Buddhist
You know there is a karma list
Good actions always earn you more
God, always thinking green,
Will use your soul again
In some new creature, depends on your score…

Just when you think you're
Doing the right thing
Life is a bumblebee
Administering a sharp sting

So with very little drama
I’m storing up good karma
One hundred-dollar turtle at a time!
But that Patrolman’s karma’s bad
It almost seems a little sad
That he’ll come back as a bug next time…

Just one swerve, that's all it took to
Get written up in that little black book
Just one swerve, what can I say?
One small turtle
Made it through another day

Unlock . . .

. . . the box  (a work in-progress)

There comes a time when
You’re out of time then
You’re backed in a corner
With no place left to go
So you cut your losses
Don’t look for causes
Don’t say I didn’t warn ya
Because we both know, I told you so…

Unlock the box, like we agreed
It’s full of things we’re going to need
Give me the keys, we’ll drive right now
We got nothing left here, anyhow…

Our days are shrinking
We’re done with thinking
Behind the eight ball
It’s time to cut and run
It’s not so strange
The rate of exchange --
Oh, it never was our call --
It’s settled by the one who holds the gun…

Unlock the box, like we agreed
It’s full of things we’re going to need
Give me the keys, we’ll drive right now
We got nothing left here, anyhow…

So buckle up now, step on the gas
We’ll sneak out via the underpass
We won’t be back, so say goodbye
We’re going to take a little ride
You know we have to do what’s best
We’re heading west, we’re heading west

Unlock the box, we’re good to go
It’s full of things we gotta know
Give me the keys, we’ll drive right now
We got nothing left here, anyhow
We got nothing left here, anyhow
Unlock the box…
