Consequences . . .

. . . or the lack thereof

". . . People sometimes plead to things that turn out not to be crimes," (Trump Attorney General William) Barr said after the Justice Department asked for the case to be dropped arguing his move was a step to "restore confidence in the system." . . . By asking the judge to drop the (Michael) Flynn case, Barr was finally accomplishing what Trump had asked (former FBI Director James) Comey to do on the twenty-sixth day of his presidency. "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go," Trump had said bak in February 2017. Now Barr had. . . The president had bent Washington to his will. . . "

And a substantial portion of the Republican party ensured that he did not suffer any consequences as a result.

Absolutely No . . .

. . . principles

(from https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/03/23/cruz-jackson-hearing-critical-race-theory-school/)
". . . Sen. Ted Cruz seldom overlooks a chance to be underhanded, and, sure enough, the Texas Republican led the effort to imbue this week’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings with the latest effort by the right to make White America fear Black America. . . Cruz attempted to tie Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman nominated to the high court, to the supposed menace of “critical race theory” — because, he said, this theory is taught at the private school where she serves on the board (and where she sent her daughters). . . “If you look at the Georgetown Day School’s curriculum, it is filled and overflowing with critical race theory,” Cruz alleged, holding up books he said the school has on reading lists. . . Georgetown Day School, in the nation’s capital, does indeed take a strong “anti-racism” approach. So does St. John’s School, the private school in Houston where, as the New Republic’s Timothy Noah noted, Cruz sends his daughters. . ."

The Richest . . .

Southward bound,
A latte grande on the seat
Between my legs.
All around,
I see the saints,
I see the dregs.
And the byproducts of civilization
Enter, exit from stage left, stage right.

Another monument
To the elusive and mysterious
Honolulu Harry,
The richest man I know.
Honolulu Harry,
The richest man in this life
Or the next.

Through the town,
Sometimes with baggage,
Some without,
Making a livelihood.
Up or down,
Any direction that you choose
And among the fast foods, strip malls and traffic,
There’s that name again as plain as day.

Harry was certainly rich,
But it only was money.
Very few liked him that much.
Now it seems kind of funny.

Just the sound
Of his name spoken with respect
And reverence that’s owed to him,
Brings to mind
Beneficence
Without a peer.
And it warms the heart to think of the thousands
Harry helped, but not while he was here.

Otherwise . . .

(By Franklin Foer, staff writer at The Atlantic. He is the author of World Without Mind and How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization from https://www.theatlantic.com/ ideas/ archive/2019/03/paul-manaforts-otherwise-blamess-life-crime/584419/)
". . . “He has lived an otherwise blameless life,” said Judge T. S. Ellis as he sentenced Paul Manafort to just 47 months in prison on Thursday. . . In an otherwise blameless life, Paul Manafort lobbied on behalf of the tobacco industry and wangled millions in tax breaks for corporations. . . he helped Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos bolster his image in Washington after he assassinated his primary political opponent. . . he worked to keep arms flowing to the Angolan generalissimo Jonas Savimbi, a monstrous leader bankrolled by the apartheid government in South Africa. . . (he) was kicked out of the lobbying firm he co-founded, accused of inflating his expenses and cutting his partners out of deals. . . he spent a decade as the chief political adviser to a clique of former gangsters in Ukraine. . . (he) came to adopt the lifestyle and corrupt practices of his Ukrainian clients as his own. . . he produced a public-relations campaign to convince Washington that Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was acting within his democratic rights and duties when he imprisoned his most compelling rival for power. . . he stood mute as Yanukovych’s police killed 130 protesters in the Maidan. . . (he) was found guilty of tax evasion on an industrial scale. Rather than paying his fair share to help fund national defense and public health, he kept his cash in Cyprus and wired it home to buy more than $1 million in bespoke clothing. . . he attempted to phone a potential witness in his trial so that they could align their stories. . ."

Training . . .

(from Donald Trump V. The United States: Inside the Struggle to Stop a President by
Michael S. Schmidt)
". . . From their offices in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, they pored over Supreme Court decisions, the Constitution, presidential history, and law review writings from a range of lawyers and judges spanning the political spectrum. . .  The memos were written in a way that didn't leave any doubt about how the White House lawyers felt about the question. . . In dry but clear legal writing, the paragraphs build a powerful and comprehensive rebuke of the president's desire to use his position atop the executive branch to carry out his vendettas. As a reading experience, one cannot escape noticing that the writers seemed to be acutely aware of the strangeness of this brief - to, essentially, teach an introduction-to-the-Constitution class to a president in training. . . Finis . . .

The final track on my album 'For the Ride', a collection of pieces conceived around the concept of travel, is titled 'Joyride II.' The travel motivation involved no specific type of travel, just the concept of the ride. The Joyride melody reappears at the conclusion of the work in full instrumentation as opposed to the opening take which is strictly solo piano. One critic, upon its release, said that Joyride II was a "WTF" moment on the album, but not necessarily in a bad way. See what you think.

An affinity lodged somewhere deep in his brain.
The results, I can say, are quite a success.
What a wonderful choice of a means to express.

Unashamedly . . .

. . . accurate

(from Donald Trump V. The United States; Inside the Struggle to Stop A President by Michael S. Schmidt)
". . . Given Trump's unusual attraction to Russia and public taunting of Comey and others, a significant portion of the country believed Trump might be a Manchurian candidate who was using the powers of the presidency to protect himself. But Burck, through his clients, was hearing what Trump was saying behind closed doors to those closest to him and believed that Trump's problem was that he was simply stupid. Trump showed no sense of understanding how the government functioned and the norms that governed Washington. . . "He's doing stupid shit," Burck said, "because he's a stupid person.". . . "

Blocked . . .

Evolution has stopped
With regard to fellow man.
Well, maybe not all, but a lot.
Civility and compromise
Fast approach their extinction,
And the truth, once supreme,
is now fought.

Beliefs and persuasions
So evident today
Are just desperate
shots at post hoc.
Our developing blindness
Gives little towards hope.
We're currently stuck
At a roadblock.

Valid . . .

(Posted byu/Yattazen, https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/7sf9nf/why_are_people_on_reddit_so_quick_to_be_mean/)
". . . Why are people on Reddit so quick to be mean, hostile or angry when you post a comment? I always get anxiety whenever I post a comment because I feel like half the time I get someone replying with a snarky, hostile comment because of misdirected anger or they read my comment the wrong way. Why can't we ever converse, speculate or throw out a random thought without someone jumping on the 'you're an idiot' reaction? I could be talking about the most uninteresting, unimportant thing and someone will take it the wrong way or someone will go on a long rant about how you're wrong when all you wanted to do was write down what you're thinking and see if anyone else was thinking the same thing. I also feel this is how people branch off into niche groups an subreddits because no one challenges them - which, by the way I encourage - but also because it's a 'safe' space so to speak. I don't mind starting a topic of debate or criticism but when it's pure misdirected over the top anger, you have to wonder what is it that you're always doing so wrong. Edit: before any more people looking to make a fool out of themselves by doing exactly what I'm talking about in my post, I'd like to clarify I DON'T want to eradicate free speech, nor am I complaining about someone calling me names on the internet. I am just honestly curious and wanting to hear what other people have to offer on the reasons why we, as people and internet-er, are quicker to look down on someone on the internet than we are in real life. That is all. . ."

Tolerance . . .

tol·er·ance
/ˈtäl(ə)rəns/
noun
noun: tolerance; plural noun: tolerances
1. the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with.
2. the capacity to endure continued subjection to something, especially a drug, transplant, antigen, or environmental conditions, without adverse reaction.
"the desert camel shows the greatest tolerance to dehydration"

One ingredient sorely missing from our national government, and consequently, our populace.

Inspiration? . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Directory)
". . . Napoleon Bonaparte (born Napoleone di Buonaparte; 15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821) was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and led several successful campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars. He was the de facto leader of the French Republic as First Consul from 1799 to 1804. As Napoleon I, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 until 1814 and again in 1815. Napoleon dominated European and global affairs for a decade while leading France against a series of coalitions in the Napoleonic Wars. He won most of these wars and battles, building a large empire that ruled over continental Europe before its collapse in 1815. He was one of the greatest military commanders in history, and his wars and campaigns are studied in military schools worldwide. Napoleon's political and cultural legacy has endured, and he has been one of the most celebrated and controversial leaders in world history. . ."

Soliciting . . .

Submitting my forthcoming album "Grains" for a review. If you must concentrate on only one track,  #6 Elephants, #7 Perfidy or #11 Baggage are recommended. Bio: The acoustic, baby grand piano is my tool of choice for constructing my original jazz melodies and improvisational piano music. But I also incorporate electronics, midi, synths, samples, etc into my recordings. When I'm not at the piano, I revel in the opportunity to make music with my long-time friends Jay (Graboski) and David (Reeve) as OHO, in the sacred tradition of that formidable, Baltimore-area musical collective.
