Staying . . .

. . . Well

Of poetry, I know not much
Of life, I've learned a little
I don't profess an expert be
In politics, left, right or middle

Mechanics of most any sort
Don't operate quite rightly
No matter how sincere I try
Results I take not lightly

In love, my fortune great indeed
The reasons not apparent
My find, I treasure constantly
Of indefinite fidelity I truly am declarant

And for the icing on the cake
As by the sea I dwell
The music that I hear and make
sustains and keeps me well

Barking . . .

. . . up the wrong tree . . .

There must be more than this
We’re better than our differences
Nothing will divide us
What we share is all that makes us good
Only if we would

Don’t let me ever forget it
There’s no such thing as
‘It’s them or it’s us’
This isn’t the way it should be
We’re still barking up the wrong tree

Seems so many motivators
Live inside us just behind the scenes
Mysterious but still just
Bold and calculating
Wild beyond your dreams
Way beyond our means

Bridges . . .

Six AM
The buses aren't nearly as crowded
As the night before
Someone said there was
Music and laughter
Behind all the shutters and doors
What was all of it for

Who needs friends
There's barely a minute for breathing
Everyone here works so hard
There's no party
When I reach my doorstep
I struggle to pull out my key
Where's the meaning for me

You see but you're unaware
There's life on the other side

But there's no bridge to cross
I'm looking through the fog
For some way out of here
I've baggage here to toss

Bless my soul
I've read about you in the paper
I've seen your picture somewhere
When you speak it's in volumes and volumes
I can't hear a word that you say
Funny it happens that way

I've been told that envy's the thing I've been feeling
For your kind of work and your play
But to tell you the truth
That it's only a wish
For a new kind of day
When worry and fear melt away

Could be
That a day will come
When you just might understand

I’d like to go away
And go there to stay
But I can’t find the way

So it goes
But change never really comes easy
Resistance is felt all around
But inevitably something happens
That makes the old ship run aground
We all stare in awe of what’s found

Like me you appear to be
Looking for some meaning here

Crosshairs . . .

Caught in the the crosshairs
Of my poison-dart, marauding rifle
But then what can a body do?
‘You’re not the man you used to be’
You say with certain relish
But then again you’re here with me
And though you surely cannot hide
You’ll try to run for certain
And I will follow where you go
As we perpetuate the dance
We’ve done through all the ages
Ours is much more than just a show

Bought my ticket
Took time off for
The drama of life
Front row orchestra
Tux, tails just for
The drama of life

Some choose their circumstances
With a dearth of careful thinking
Some can’t make any choice at all
But all the options must be weighed
Outcomes evaluated
And for some flavor add some salt

Take an intermission
Look at what you’re missing

It’s not a natural
Or a simple kind of undertaking
Half-heartedness won’t make it so
To rise above self-serving vanities
Makes all the difference
Sometimes that’s all you need to know
