Not Too Shabby . . .

. . . a wish . . .

(from HTTP://THEOTHERCLOSET-ATHEISM.BLOGSPOT.COM/2009/12/19-ATHEISTS-CHRISTMAS-PRAYER.HTML)
This Christmas, I pray that the struggle over the “true meaning” of the holiday is wiped away, replaced by the desire to honor what Christmas means to you and not to your neighbors.
I pray that we as a nation can learn to put aside the party lines and shields of segregation to leave the world better than we found it.
I pray that we as a race can learn to prosper without greed, without indifference.
I pray that the good times outweigh the bad, and that we enter the lives of those we are lucky enough to encounter with the grace and respect that everyone deserves, regardless of their status, regardless of our creed.
I pray we wake up one day with the recognition that – black or white, rich or poor, religious or not – we all want the same things, even if we disagree on how best to achieve them.
I pray that those who need shelter will find it.
I pray that those in pain will find an end to suffering.
I pray for peace.
I pray for hope.
Most of all, I pray that tomorrow will be better than it was today.
For all of us.

Blame . . .

I knew him when the world was still young
Sometimes I liked him but sometimes sometimes I didn't at all
But so little choice did I have
In the matter of just who I am

I watched him struggle with his tribulations
Wanting to lend some kind of a helping hand
Still any amount of advice I would offer
Was just so much spam

Can't you see people like you and me
Are so much the same
After all we're the ones standing tall
We took all that life had to give
There's no one else to blame

He lived an average life in an average place
Who ever gets to choose his own time and space
He never fit into a crowd
If he thought he belonged there somehow

He felt emotions torn between two extremes
Yearned to belong but fueled by some other means
The kind not so easily explained
And the kind he could feel but not know

Can't you see people like you and me
Are so much the same
After all we're the ones standing tall
We took all that life had to give
There's no one else to blame

The springtime came dressed to the nines
We never heard of reading between the lines
Then summer we thought we were grown
As autumn fast approaches
The seeds have all been sown

I try to visit once every now and then
There's not a lot that we have in common now
But in spite of present demands
There's a laugh and some memories again

Can't you see people like you and me
Are so much the same
After all we're the ones standing tall
We took all that life had to give
There's no one else to blame

Baggage. . .

Six AM
The buses aren't nearly as crowded
As the night before
Someone said there was
Music and laughter
Behind all the shutters and doors
What was all of it for

Who needs friends
There's barely a minute for breathing
Everyone here works so hard
There's no party
When I reach my doorstep
I struggle to pull out my key
Where's the meaning for me

You see but you're unaware
There's life on the other side

But there's no bridge to cross
I'm looking through the fog
For some way out of here
I've baggage here to toss

Bless my soul
I've read about you in the paper
I've seen your picture somewhere
When you speak it's in volumes and volumes
I can't hear a word that you say
Funny it happens that way
I've been told that envy's the thing I've been feeling
For your kind of work and your play
But to tell you the truth
That it's only a wish
For a new kind of day
When worry and fear melt away

Could be
That a day will come
When you just might understand

But there's no bridge to cross
I'm looking through the fog
For some way out of here
I've baggage here to
I've baggage here to
I've baggage here to toss
