Superman . . .

Should every man yield to the yearning unashamed
Without hypocrisy and wastefulness;
Squander the strength he’s been endowed with;
Feign superiority as tunnel vision’s all he sees?

I’m trying to develop a superman;
Dionysus evolving into perfect humanity.

Gadding about helping each other get along
Won’t make us build the kind of man I see.
Inferiors are weak copies of betters
Printed on bad paper from old and worn-out plates now gone.

Selection, survivors mastering;
Bettering the species, irrespective of
Everything you’ve ever learned
About what’s right or wrong.

You hear the word, you’re quoting scripture that you learned
Originating from a deity.
But should that motivate your actions?
Such self-serving rewarding scheme.
Yours or mine, that’s what both seem.

Mister . . .

No posture, pretense, gloss or sheen
Or board or false restrictions
Sincerity, consideration
And ability to listen

Leading and accomplishing
What was to be fulfilled
With kindness and humanity
Helped character to build

Wanna Be

Ah . . .

. . . music . . .

(from http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/topics/topic_music.html#vGMC3c51rp64YyJ9.99)
"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything."
-Plato

"One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain."
-Bob Marley

"If music be the food of love, play on. "
-William Shakespeare

"I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music."
-Billy Joel

"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent."
-Victor Hugo

"Music in the soul can be heard by the universe. "
-Lao Tzu

"Without music, life would be a mistake."
-Friedrich Nietzsche

"It is cruel, you know, that music should be so beautiful. It has the beauty of loneliness of pain: of strength and freedom. The beauty of disappointment and never-satisfied love. The cruel beauty of nature and everlasting beauty of monotony."
-Benjamin Britten

"Where words fail, music speaks."
-Hans Christian Andersen

Casualness and Formality . . .

(from Joseph and his Brothers by Thomas Mann)
". . . They approached the matter about which they had come together, however, only reluctantly and with shrugs, skirting and backing off the issue several times, as if each side wished to suggest to the other that it would be better not to speak of it-precisely because the topic to be addressed, the matter at hand, was a subject about which it was necessary to maintain the appearance of disdain for the sake of a higher humanity.  For, ultimately, it is the luxury of exaggerated objectivity, a pretense of priorities honoring refined formality, including a generous casualness about wasting time for formality's sake, that defines what is worthy of humankind: those things that are more than merely natural and therefore civilized. . . Un-Make . . .

In a recent essay at www.truth-out.org/opinion/item/20156-an-open-letter-to-you, William Rivers Pitt expresses an extreme helplessness at some recent events in the news which are representative of some of the major problems in modern American society.

The Democratic politician who smashes all the worldly belongings of people who live on the street because he hates homeless people;  the video game based upon the Sandy Hook tragedy which was banned post-haste while nothing was done about the causes of the initial tragedy;  and the young, 99 percent-er who died of a treatable ailment because of the inability to get health insurance.
Details can be pursued through the hyperlink above.

There's not much to add.  And I certainly could not add anything that would be as eloquent as what Mr. Pitt has composed. I do feel the need to quote this particular portion though:

". . . I hope it is not a hollow room, a hollow country, a hollow soul I speak to, because these three stories happen all the time, and every day. This is where you live, and this is who you are. If you have a conscience, it makes you feel dirty in your heart.

We are responsible for this. We are all part of this thing that is dismantling our basic humanity brick by brick.

We can un-make it.  We simply have to. . ."

LET'S . . .

It Was Murder. . .

. . . in our Avalon . . .

This town's like the one they sang about
in The Green Green Grass of Home
All the perfect picket fences
And gingerbread cottages in a row
Brightly colored walls on every house
And if figure on the lawn
Peace and calm
I found where I belong
Til the murder in our Avalon

You could hear the children laugh and play
All their games on any day
Pretty Moms and Handsome Daddies
Would walk hand-in-hand down the street
Any summer night
You could never find another place
Where your life would be so good
I considered this my jackpot won
Til the murder in our Avalon

Now and air of uneasiness
Pervades everything
I can't seem to get any rest anymore
Might have been a heaven on earth
A place we could be
Safe from all the rest of the world and humanity
There was no stranger
No homicide
You killed our love
It was clearly a job from the inside

Now the trees are greener than before
But a chill is in the air
People go about their business
And everyone acts like I'm not even there
I've been told it's time to move along
And that life continues on
I've described your heinous crime in song
It was murder in our Avalon

Common. . .

. . . sense. . .

(Thanks to Medea Benjamin of truthout.com)
Some common sense to begin restoring America to its former position of respect and admiration:
  1. No more drone strikes.  They don't stop, but help to make terrorists.
  1. Save money and help the cause by closing the drone airbases.
  1. Free Guantanamo prisoners which have already been cleared for release. Holding them is an affront to humanity and hypocrisy with regard to our values.
  1. Apologize and compensate the families of innocent people hurt or killed by drones or other military action.
  1. Withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan.
  1. Talk. The Taliban and more rational elements of Al Qaeda have indicated they are open to negotiations. History shows a large percentage of terrorists groups have been dissolved by joining the political process.
  1. End support of dictatorships and repressive leaders. Business selling weapons might be good for US weapons makers but not for the rest of us.
  1. Support non-violent democracy movements. Chaos and instability only help terrorists.
  1. Stop disregarding international law and national sovereignty in killing terrorism suspects.
  1. Use foreign aid to support education, healthcare and elimination of poverty.
