Superman . . .

Should every man yield to the yearning unashamed
Without hypocrisy and wastefulness;
Squander the strength he’s been endowed with;
Feign superiority as tunnel vision’s all he sees?

I’m trying to develop a superman;
Dionysus evolving into perfect humanity.

Gadding about helping each other get along
Won’t make us build the kind of man I see.
Inferiors are weak copies of betters
Printed on bad paper from old and worn-out plates now gone.

Selection, survivors mastering;
Bettering the species, irrespective of
Everything you’ve ever learned
About what’s right or wrong.

You hear the word, you’re quoting scripture that you learned
Originating from a deity.
But should that motivate your actions?
Such self-serving rewarding scheme.
Yours or mine, that’s what both seem.

We . . .

I would like think that human beings, as a species, are continuously evolving.  By evolution, I mean progressing in our thought processes to attain a higher level of understanding of who (and what) we really are and of our relationship with each other and the world in which we live. I am now realizing, in my later years, that while this is not untrue, this process does and will not affect all, nor even the majority, of the populace. Truth is, a very small number of us appear to grasp the subtleties, as well of the value, of this progress. . . a very disappointing fact.

Song . . .

This song began as an 'attraction' song, then became an 'infatuation' song later evolving into an 'obsession' song.  I think it can now legitimately be called a love song. A forty year-old transcription of the song hangs over my baby grand and its namesake continues to grace my life.

Yesterdays news. . .

. . . of the Obama administration's change in stance on the Defense of Marriage Act was most certainly Good News.

Why jettison DOMA to the proverbial sharks? Because. . . "DOMA has been used by federal officials to justify excluding gay couples from a wide range of benefits that are available to heterosexual couples. These include federal health, Social Security, pension and tax benefits, even to gay couples who were legally married in the handful of states that recognize same-sex unions. The Government Accountability Office has estimated that there are more than 1,000 provisions of federal law "in which benefits, rights, and privileges are contingent on marital status or in which marital status is a factor." Widows have been forced to pay estate taxes, where a survivor in a heterosexual marriage would have no tax bill from an inheritance. Federal employees may not enroll their same-sex spouse in federal health plans or take family and medical leave to care for their partner. Same-sex couples cannot file joint income tax returns or benefit from state retiree health insurance plans that are controlled by federal tax law. DOMA even has been used to prevent a gay couple from filing a joint petition for bankruptcy."

Eric Holder said, the section of the law defining marriage as between a man and a woman is unconstitutional, in the administration's view. Importantly for judicial review, Holder says courts also should apply a heightened level of scrutiny that makes it more difficult for laws to be upheld.

Maybe we really ARE evolving.
