The music business is a lot like the electoral process.

"The clear difference between the cheap pop put on the radio and the quality work heard less is the amount of money thrown at the pop to force into the ears of all." (thanks David Balogh)

Sweet . . .

. . . dreams?
For some reason, this office seemed very unbusiness-like with its four-person table set-up that appeared to be designed more for eating than for working.  And the people in this office seemed to be there for eating and social intercourse, and maybe they were, because amid some barely discernible chatter I detected such activities. But then an awareness enveloped me that this was a commercial enterprise of some sort from which I apparently earned my living, and from my quarter of one of the many tables, I decided that I required a respite from the demands of the task I was performing at the time, and that I would take a little break. In what was, to me at the time, apparently normal protocol, I, on my wheeled, office chair, began simply 'zooming' around the room visiting, or greeting (if you will) people at the other tables quite indiscriminately and to their obvious surprise. From the reactions on multiple faces, it was as if I possessed a certain admirable audacity or charismatic self-confidence in my decision to undertake this unorthodox action.

And then, as is quite common in dreams, on the return trip to my workstation, I was suddenly and inexplicably traveling, on my wheeled office chair, down a major and relatively busy city thoroughfare.  As the cars and trucks bullied their way to and from their destinations and origins, I was hurling into this vehicular miasma in the wrong direction.  To my right, on the sidewalk of Fairmount Avenue, I saw three adolescent boys riding bicycles in the direction opposite to my own and couldn't help noticing that the boy in the middle was, quite happily as evidenced by his care-free, self-absorbed smile, riding a bicycle that appeared, albeit illogically, to be upside-down.

Business As Usual. . .

This is why, I believe, if the distribution of wealth (or anything remotely involved with it) IS EVER GOING TO CHANGE,  we must have MORE from which to choose than only the REPUBLICRATS and the DEMOCRANS. We must stop fearing 'throwing away [our] vote' and begin to demonstrate that WE THE PEOPLE want public servants who SERVE THE PUBLIC and not ones that only serve the special interests and businesses who PAY to put them there. It can only be done by electing candidates NOT affiliated with the big two. It won't be quick or soon. But it must start somewhere however small.

(from http://www.nationofchange.org/bill-clinton-and-steny-hoyer-wall-street-democrats-fight-back-1396013681)
". . . If progressive and populist ideas resonate with most voters, some people have asked, why isn’t the Democratic Party doing better in the polls? Here’s one reason: Some of the party’s most prominent leaders are still pushing Wall Street’s unpopular and discredited economic platform.

Recent speeches by former President Bill Clinton and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer showed that Wall Street continues to hold considerable sway in their party, despite the fact that its austerity agenda has failed. Its “deficits over growth” ideology has wounded both Europe and the United States. To hear Clinton and Hoyer speak, you’d think we’d learned nothing from the economic experience of the last five years.

What President Clinton says matters. He’s the architect and primary spokesperson for the corporatist and pro-Wall Street wing of his party. He’s also the political and personal partner of the Democratic Party’s presumed 2016 candidate. Enormous sums are being raised for Hillary Clinton’s candidacy even now, which reinforces the Clintons’ enormous influence (and gives them good reason to please the big-money crowd).

Headlines like the AP’s emphasized the “gradual deficit reduction” theme of President Clinton’s talk to the “Clinton Global Initiative University” in Phoenix. The Washington Post reports that President Clinton was given a “glowing introduction” from Michael Peterson. Peterson heads the right-wing, strongly pro-austerity, and staunchly anti-Social Security Peterson Foundation on behalf of his billionaire father Peter G. Peterson. That introduction, we’re told, led to “an extemporaneous riff about deficit issues” (although we wonder how much is truly extemporaneous with this most polished of political performers). . . "

Linked . . .

. . . in

What is going on with Linkedin???  (or is it just me?)

Seems within the past nine months or so (maybe more), there are all these attractive young ladies inviting me to connect on the Linkedin website, who are (of ALL things!) 'Consultants at Self Employed'.

CONSULTANTS AT SELF-EMPLOYED!!

For what it's worth, they also seem to be from anywhere but the U.S.

Something about this seems to be a bit fishy to me.

What exactly is a "Consultant at Self Employed" and shouldn't a self-employed consultant be required to add the specific business in which they are qualified to consult?  Maybe I'm skeptical or possibly just naive, but their photos would indicate their commonality to coincidentally be either:  1. they are all simply nice looking young ladies with a desire and talent for consulting;  they are each operating an escort (or some other less conventionally acceptable business) service.

Looks like spam to me.  Has anyone else had this happen?

Unresolved, in fact . . .

Conclusions by both the FBI and NTSB are suspicious, at best, with regard to what really happened.
Some convincing evidence does exist but to date, no one has been held accountable for what appears to be an assassination.

 (from American Assassination; The Strange Death of Senator Paul Wellstone by Four Arrows and Jim Fetzer)
 ". . . Once again, Wellstone seems to have been a nemesis for big business.  However, Wellstone posed an even more significant and costly threat to corporate profit-making interests. He tried to enable the 2002 defense appropriations bill to bar corporate tax dodgers from being eligible for defense department contracts.  Additionally, he successfully amended the Homeland Security bill to bar those companies from getting contracts with the new "Department of Homeland Security." Both amendments passed on the Senate floor by voice votes.

After the November election - and after Paul Wellstone's tragic death - the final version of the homeland security bill gutted the Wellstone amendment. His bills were obliterated by enough waivers to assure that corporate lobby groups would indeed land the billion-dollar defense contracts we have now seen, especially in Iraq.  Similarly, a mental health reform Wellstone had championed, which would have required insurance companies to provide mental health coverage on a par with physical health coverage if their policies cover both, has been successfully blocked, one more indication that the loss of "the conscience of the Senate" continues to make a difference. . ."

Spook. . .

. . . Handy

(from http://spookhandy.com/wp/biography/)
". . . Spook Handy was No Musical Genius As a Kid ~ He played no instrument, owned no records, and didn’t even have a radio until he was in high school. In fact, he didn’t make the first cut when he tried out for Glee Club in 5th grade.

But he Had a Dream ~ His love for music dates back to his first time watching the Beatles perform on TV. That day a seed was planted – a vision, a possibility of still being a fun loving person when he grew up. And little was anyone to know that one day that seed would sprout.

And The Dream Grew ~ It happened on a stiflingly humid New Jersey morning the summer after graduating Rutgers University (Phi Beta Kappa) with a major in Math and Business. Spook had been offered several lucrative jobs in the actuarial field. He had been groomed for this career by his parents and teachers because he was good at math as a child. He had three job interviews lined up for the day. But…

Spook Always Carried with him a Lust for Living “Outside the Box” ~ His “what if” and “why not” questions raised many eyebrows. His unorthodox religious perspectives got him kicked out of Catholic school after 1st grade. And somewhere in the back of his mind he never gave up on the dream he had when he first saw the Beatles. So, on that fateful morning as he stood in the mirror hopelessly trying to tie his tie, a sudden and unforgiving truth overwhelmed him. The world of convention was not his fate. Sure, math came easy. But his lessons were to be learned through his heart, not his mind. That day he gave his suit and tie to the local thrift shop, bought a used Yahama guitar for $50 and set out to follow his heart’s dream. . ."

Holy. . .

. . . MOLEY!!!!. . .
 (from http://www.nbcnews.com/business/coal-company-fires-150-workers-response-obama-re-election-1C6977698)
". . . Robert Murray, the chief executive of Ohio-based coal provider Murray Energy Corporation's "PRAYER" . . .

“The American people have made their choice. They have decided that America must change its course, away from the principals of our Founders. And, away from the idea of individual freedom and individual responsibility. Away from capitalism, economic responsibility, and personal acceptance.”

He concluded by asking God for forgiveness for the layoff decisions.

“Lord, please forgive me and anyone with me in Murray Energy Corporation for the decisions that we are now forced to make to preserve the very existence of any of the enterprises that you have helped us build. We ask for your guidance in this drastic time with the drastic decisions that will be made to have any hope of our survival as an American business enterprise.”

Several companies made headlines before the presidential election Tuesday for insinuating that they would fire workers if Romney was not elected. . . "

. . . and delivery us from our conscience, social responsibility, and any other worthwhile humanity-related attribute for thine is the boardroom, forever and ever HEYYYY MANNN!!!!!!

Some legalities. . .

Did you know?
Copyright shape the practices that drive the  music business from recording to touring deals. Washington has been passing and amending copyright laws regarding the music industry for more than a century. Still many artist know very little about copyright or rely on obsolete knowledge about those rules.

Copyright actually begins at the moment the music and lyrics are set down on paper, recorded, or stored on a computer.  Copyright protects the musician even if the song is never registered with the Copyright Office. The 'poor man's copyright' of ailing a copy of the work to yourself really does not provide any additional legal protection.

Copyright of a composition is totally different and separate from copyright of a sound recording. A sound recording can be considered a master recorded performance of the composition. Always be sure to protect the copyright of the composition separately from the sound recording.

The right to perform or play a song in public is one of the exclusive rights of the copyright holder. Permission or a license is required in advance music is to be played in public unless the music is in the Public Domain or the use of the music qualifies as fair use. But the line between what is private and what is public is complicated. Prior to the Music Licensing Act in 1998, some court cases have drawn the line and declared public uses of music to be copyright infringement unless licensed, as follows:

    Radio stations, bars, night clubs, and juke box operators;
    Hotels that play the radio for guests through speakers or headphones;
    Restaurants;
    Stores;
    Telephone intercom systems that play music while callers are on hold” (Source:                                    http://publishing.wsu.edu/copyright/music.html)
