Walk A Mile . . .

. . . in his shoes before you judge (a person). . . Many foreign policy problems would be eliminated if this proverb was sincerely put into practice. . .

(from http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A60098-2005Feb28.html - way back in 2005)
". . . "It's not clear how well Putin understands the controversy that led to the dismissal of four CBS journalists over the discredited report on Bush's National Guard service. Yet it's all too clear how Putin sees the relationship between Bush and the American media -- just like his own. Bush's aides have long feared that former KGB officers in Putin's inner circle are painting a twisted picture of U.S. policy. So Bush explained how he had no power to fire American journalists. It made little difference. When the two presidents emerged for their joint press conference, one Russian reporter repeated Putin's language about journalists getting fired. Bush (already hot after an earlier question about his spying on U.S. citizens) asked the reporter if he felt free. . ."

Quotes . . .

. . . and the press. . .
. . . inanities (blamed on the press, but originating from his own mouth) from the idiot-in-chief . . .

Discussing the Opposition to Confederate Statues-
“George Washington was a slave owner. Was George a slave owner? So will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson? Do you like him? OK, good. Are we going to take down the statue? Cause he was a major slave owner. Now are we going to take down his statue?”

Trump, Who Has Repeatedly Made Statements Before Knowing the Facts, Says He Waits for the Facts-
“I didn’t wait long. I wanted to make sure, unlike most politicians, that what I said was correct, not make a quick statement. The statement I made on Saturday was a fine statement but you don’t make statements that direct unless you know the facts. It takes a while to get the facts. You still don’t know the facts. I want to know the fact.… Before I make a statement, I need the facts.

The Alt-Left-
“What about the alt-left that came charging at, as you say, the alt-right, do they have any semblance of guilt? What about the fact that they have charging with clubs in their hands, swinging clubs. Do they have any problem? I think they do. So as far as I’m concerned that was a horrible, horrible day. Wait a minute, I'm not finished, fake news.”

Reviving the ‘Many Sides’ Statement-
“I watched those much more closely than you people watched it, and you had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent. And nobody wants to say that, but I’ll say that right now. You had a group on one side that came charging in, without a permit, and they were very, very violent.”

‘Defending’ Steve Bannon-
“I like Mr. Bannon. He’s a friend of mind. But Mr. Bannon came on very late, you know that. I went through 17 senators, governors, and I won all the primaries. Mr. Bannon came on very much later than that. And I like him, he’s a good man. He is not a racist, I can tell you that. He’s a good person. He actually gets a very unfair press in that regard, but we’ll see what happens with Mr. Bannon”

Plugging His Winery-
“I own a house in Charlottesville, does anyone know I own a house in Charlottesville? It’s in Charlottesville, you’ll see. It is the winery. I mean I know a lot about Charlottesville. Charlottesville is a great place that’s been very badly hurt over the last couple of days. I own actually one of the largest wineries in the United States. It’s in Charlottesville.”

Like . . .

. . . a child. . .

(from https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/15/opinion/trump-classified-data.html?smid=fb-share)
". . . There are three tasks that most mature adults have sort of figured out by the time they hit 25. Trump has mastered none of them. Immaturity is becoming the dominant note of his presidency. . . First, most adults have learned to sit still. But mentally, Trump is still a 7-year-old boy who is bouncing around the classroom. Trump’s answers in these interviews are not very long — 200 words at the high end — but he will typically flit through four or five topics before ending up with how unfair the press is to him. . . He is ill informed about his own policies and tramples his own talking points. . . most people of drinking age have achieved some accurate sense of themselves, some internal criteria to measure their own merits and demerits. But Trump seems to need perpetual outside approval to stabilize his sense of self, so he is perpetually desperate for approval, telling heroic fabulist tales about himself. . . “In a short period of time I understood everything there was to know about health care,” he told Time. “A lot of the people have said that, some people said it was the single best speech ever made in that chamber,” he told The Associated Press, referring to his joint session speech. . . By Trump’s own account, he knows more about aircraft carrier technology than the Navy. . .He is thus the all-time record-holder of the Dunning-Kruger effect, the phenomenon in which the incompetent person is too incompetent to understand his own incompetence. . . "

. . . "ay, there's the rub!"

Not Good . . .

. . . Not Smart . . .

". . . The White House barred several news organizations from an off-camera press briefing . . . handpicking a select group of reporters that included a number of conservative outlets friendly toward Donald Trump. . . The “gaggle” with Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, took place in lieu of his daily briefing and was originally scheduled as an on-camera event. . . Donald Trump tells CPAC: 'We are Americans and the future belongs to us . . . But the White House press office announced later in the day that the Q&A session would take place off camera before only an . . . “expanded pool” of journalists, and in Spicer’s West Wing office as opposed to the James S Brady press briefing room where it is typically held. . . . Outlets seeking to gain entry whose requests were denied included the Guardian, the New York Times, Politico, CNN, BuzzFeed, the BBC, the Daily Mail and others. Conservative publications such as Breitbart News, the One America News Network and the Washington Times were allowed into the meeting, as well as TV networks CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC. The Associated Press and Time were invited but boycotted the briefing. . . . The decision to limit access to Spicer, hours after Trump once again declared that much of the media was “the enemy of the American people” while speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, marked a dramatic shift. . . ."

Demoralizing?. . .

Yes folks, we're here. We've reached the point where our president's most pressing issue is a non-issue. . .

". . . There’s this constant theme to undercut the enormous support he has,” Spicer said of Trump.
. . He said the Republican had repeatedly been underestimated by a media landscape that constantly second-guessed him. . . “And it’s unbelievably frustrating when you’re continually told it’s not big enough; it’s not good enough. You can’t win.”. . ."

First of all, still unbelievably, he already won.  (Remember the election.)
Second, it's time for this young man (pick one, Trump or Spicer) learn what every OTHER seven year-old has to learn . . . You can't always have it YOUR way (read: pretend that the facts do not exist).

Challenge . . .

(More from http://www.concordmonitor.com/Azzi-Trump-media-coverage-U-S-politics-1979775.aspx)
". . . the press chose not to try to understand what was roiling the soul of an angry segment of our body politic. They chose instead to treat Trump as a celebrity and quickly realized they were all welcome to visit on his red carpet – as long as they didn’t soil his precious fabric. . . The Fourth Estate should insist: Donald Trump, prove that you opposed the Iraq War before it happened. Donald Trump, prove that you saw thousands of New Jersey Muslims celebrating 9/11 by dancing on rooftops. Donald Trump, prove that the unemployment rate may be as high as “42 percent.”  Donald Trump, prove that (America is) the most highly taxed nation in the world. Together we’ve all watched as the press became his Boswells, his Bob Woodwards, his stenographers, chroniclers of process than of content, more worshipful of celebrity than of truth. . . .The Fourth Estate, succumbing to its own parochial interests, has failed to deconstruct Trump’s narratives and lies, especially those that might possibly expose its complicity and coziness with power elites and celebrity. . . During 2015, out of 77 Trump statements checked by Pulitzer-Prize winning PolitiFact, 76 percent were rated Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire – a record unmatched by any other candidate. While knowledge is irrelevant to Trump, to Trump’s partisans – or to Trump supporters who hate Hillary Clinton more than they love America – such a candidate should be daily challenged by the press, which should deny him a platform until he fully submits to answering questions. Ignoring truth leads to constraints over what gets publicly discussed and challenged and jeopardizes the American public’s ability to make well-informed decisions about issues of national interest, policy and political leaders. . ."

Inadequate. . .

. . . education . . .

(from http://www.concordmonitor.com/Azzi-Trump-media-coverage-U-S-politics-1979775.aspx)
". . .‘It’s a universal law – intolerance is the first sign of an inadequate education,” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote. “An ill-educated person behaves with arrogant impatience, whereas truly profound education breeds humility.”. . . a sad reflection of the state of politics and education in America. Such is the result, too, of a media more obsessed with celebrity and acceptance than with representing the interests of civil society. . . Of a media more engaged with style than substance, profits than policy, access than accuracy. At a time where the political barbarism of Donald Trump – the original “Birther” who fed the anti-Obama movement from the beginning – has given license to his followers to engage in delusionary, racist rhetoric against women and whole communities of minority Americans, the press chose to treat Trump-ism as a soap-opera phenomena rather than as a challenge to American values. That there are Americans who are today celebrating the anointment of a charismatic professional bully, serial liar, misogynist, xenophobic demagogue who divides through hatred in order to conquer is not only the result of eight years of a nativist, racist revival movement but proof that a nation created on the promise of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness still has a long way to go to fulfill its promise to all its citizens. . . The very media that failed us after 9/11, that failed us during Afghanistan and Iraq and the so-called “War on Terror,” and later failed to directly confront institutional corruption, corporate oligarchs and ruling elites. Now, they have failed to directly confront the rise of nativism, white nationalism, bigotry and racism that followed President Obama’s election. . ."

Did I . . .

. . . mention our WONDERFUL press?. . .

. . . This was one of the top stories on NBCNews.com yesterday.  Is it any wonder that some think this man is a viable presidential candidates? . .

(from http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/key-source-disputes-times-story-trump-s-behavior-women-n574741)
". . . Key Source Disputes Times Story on Trump's Behavior With Women
by JANE C. TIMM
The woman whose personal story led a New York Times feature casting presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump as sexist and inappropriate with women disputed the story in an interview on Monday. . . The woman, Rowanne Brewer Lane, told Fox News that the Times' portrayal of her experiences with Trump was "very upsetting" and dishonest. . . "I did not have a negative experience with Donald Trump and I don't appreciate them making it look like I was saying that it was a negative experience because it was not," the former model and one-time companion of Trump said Monday morning. . . The Fourth. . .

. . . Estate

(from wikipedia.com)
". . . The Fourth Estate (or fourth power) is a societal or political force or institution whose influence is not consistently or officially recognized. "Fourth Estate" most commonly refers to the news media, especially print journalism or "the press". Thomas Carlyle attributed the origin of the term to Edmund Burke, who used it in a parliamentary debate in 1787 on the opening up of press reporting of the House of Commons of Great Britain. Earlier writers have applied the term to lawyers, to the British queens consort (acting as a free agent, independent of the king), and to the proletariat. The term makes implicit reference to the earlier division of the three Estates of the Realm. . ."

NBC News should have been ashamed to print this story.  The president is pointing out what the press should have made clear to the general public over one year ago!

(from http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/barack-obama/president-obama-donald-trump-s-record-needs-be-examined-n569441)
". . . President Barack Obama . . . said presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has a "long record that needs to be examined" and insisted that the race for the White House is "not a reality show. . . I just want to emphasize the degree to which we are in serious times and this is a really serious job. This is not entertainment, this is not a reality show. This is a contest for the presidency of the United States," Obama told reporters in his first public comments about since Trump's GOP rivals ended their presidential campaigns. . . Obama also said the media needs to play a role in vetting the candidates' policies and not focus on the "circus.". . . "If they take a position on international issues that could threaten war, or has the potential of upending our critical relationships with other countries, or would potentially break the financial system, that needs to be reported on," Obama said in the White House briefing room. . ."

One More . . .

". . . It has been a dreadful performance by the press and by party leaders. They are speaking in such a way as to naturalize the creepy, weird and completely un-American positions Trump has taken.

This is how the dictators came to power in the 1920s and 1930s. Good people remained silent or acquiesced. People expressed hope that something good would come of it. Mussolini would wring the laziness out of Italy and make the trains run on time.

When Benjamin Franklin was asked by a lady after the Constitutional Convention what sort of government the US had, he said, “A Republic, Madame, if you can keep it.”

You have to wonder if we can keep it. . ."

Our Wonderful . . .

. . . Press . . .

Why do I have to hear, see, read about Donald Trump every day as if he really is a serious, viable, candidate for president of the United States of America?  Because of our wonderful press - gawd bless 'em!

"You can say what you want I have no doubt that it (waterboarding) does work in term of information and other things," Trump told (Jake) Tapper.   ["other things"?  -  my note]

Jacob Paul "Jake" Tapper is an American journalist, cartoonist and author. As of 2016, he is the Chief Washington Correspondent, anchor of the CNN weekday television news show The Lead with Jake Tapper

Did Jake Tapper ask Trump to provide empirical evidence of maybe an example or two of instances where he (Trump) could prove that the statement he had just made was, in fact, accurate?

NNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

Our dedicated, objective, informative press at work?  (Maybe "Jake" is a better cartoonist?)

In Some Ways . . .

. . . I actually sympathize with Palin.   I've been in situations where I was unprepared for what I was to face and certainly regretted the way in which I reacted . . .

(from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin_interviews_with_Katie_Couric)
". . . COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this—to stay informed and to understand the world?

COURIC: Can you name a few?

PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news too. Alaska isn't a foreign country, where, it's kind of suggested and it seems like, 'Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C. may be thinking and doing when you live up there in Alaska?' Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America. . . "

News . . .

. . . outlets. . .

(from 935 Lies; The Future of Truth and the Decline of America's Moral Integrity by Charles Lewis)
". . . But here's what troubles (Jane) Kirtley: "I fear that 'big media' are becoming increasingly irrelevant in this equation. . . You know as well as I do that the big First Amendment cases of the 1960s through '80s were mostly fought and won by the 'legacy press.' I am not at all sure that will continue to be the case. And this is significant because if the legacy media don't do it, I'm not sure who will step in." The reality, she added, is that if today's news media owners "don't see that the First Amendment is the prerequisite to making money, then they won't" take risks, publish, and defend their legal right to do so later in court. "The legions of bloggers are good at making noise, but I'm not sure they'll join forces to litigate-assuming that, as a group, they'd have enough money to do it.". . . "
